NFHS Rules - Definition of a False Start, and Illinois' interpretation

Will definitely be an interesting pre-game meeting with certain teams that used that Illinois interpretation to their advantage.

NFHS Rules - Definition of a False Start, and Illinois' interpretation

I think it is fair to say that the interpretation of word "act" here is something physical (movement) and not verbal.

Two referee questions from plays from games this weekend

With the 40 second play clock rules that went into effect a few years ago, there is no whistling in a play anymore in general. In your case with the sack, the 40 second play clock starts after the sack. The officials get the ball spotted and once the offense is set they can snap, no need to wait...

Two referee questions from plays from games this weekend

There is no high school rule that changes roughing inside or outside the tackle box (free blocking zone to use the correct HS term). And you never get a free shot at the kicker no matter where he is, if you can hold up you have to hold up. That being said, I will give more leeway to the...

Southwest Prairie having Thursday night games

Moving weeks 3 and 4 to Thursday does not help with any of the other weeks of their schedule. The problem is area wide and involves all conferences every weekend. They still could run into issues later in the season. To cover the problem, 18 games in the entire Chicago suburban conferences need...

Referee shortage nationwide and some of the reasons why

In the good ole days, we would show up to a Catholic school, someone would go over to the ticket booth, grab a stack of bills, and pay us in cash.

Referee shortage nationwide and some of the reasons why

I only officiate football. I think coaches have gotten better. Haven't gotten a Christmas card from one yet, but overall they have gotten better. But the fans have gotten exponentially worse. Like Newt said, football is easier, fans are farther away. I can't tell you how many new guys just...

Referee shortage nationwide and some of the reasons why

I have been teaching a new officials class here in the Chicago area for over 10 years. The average age of a new football official is about 42. Usually dads who coached their kids up to a certain point and now want to stay involved. Very few young (under 25) new officials make it past 2 years...

    MAYBE?

Agree that 7 would be easier in lots of ways. First 2 rounds are $74 per game. The Chicago area rate (most conferences) for regular season games was $77 this year. Pay is just one of many reasons we are losing officials. (Some states are paying $100+ for varsity regular season games).

    MAYBE?

Other states do this (move to 7 man for back end of the playoffs). Some challenges with this. 1) 7 man mechanics are very different than 5 man. It is doable as other states do it, but would require additional training. This is currently done in IHSA baseball as I believe they add a 3rd at some...

Question for Officials or Rules Experts

If he was a covered by another receiver, it is actually 2 fouls, ineligible downfield and illegal touching. Both 5 yards but the illegal touching also has loss of down, so you go with that one.
