Biggest upsets in state championship game

I wasn't there in 1988 at Jonesville. But I knew John Cooke later in the 1990s when he coached at Roanoke Catholic. Fascinating story. Born and raised in VA Beach. Started the football program at Green Run HS in the 70s. Also had a few more stops at VA Beach schools before ending up in...

Biggest upsets in state championship game

Great point. I'm not positive, but I think they won a playoff game and maybe the state title game by scores of 7-6 or 7-0. A pretty legendary post season ride of grit.

Biggest upsets in state championship game

1988 Jonesville squad under John Cooke finished 5-5 and went on to win 4 playoff games and the state A title. They beat an undefeated (13-0) Strasburg team for the state championship that year. The school would then close it's doors forever that year. Amazing story.

Bath County 55 Parry McCluer 0 Final

Watched Bath play Catholic this season. Was surprised to see a very down Catholic team with only 18 players and just 1 senior put up 28 first-half points against Bath. Now Bath clamped down in 2nd half and shut out RC, but seeing RC score at will in the 1st half gave me pause on how good Bath...

If I read things correctly on another blog, I just saw that Life forfeited to IMG Academy this week. Any idea why?

Correct, but Smith Mountain Lake Christian uses "homeschool" kids on their football and other athletic teams. For that reason and others, they aren't VISAA-eligible.

No. Trust me on this. Paul VI enrollment is 1200 just for the high school - grades 9-12. There are several Catholic High Schools in Northern VA in the Diocese of Arlington that have very similar high school enrollment numbers - well over 1000 kids in just the high school.

Ahh! That makes sense. I couldn't tell you if LCA is the largest K-12 private school in the state. You very well may be correct about that. Since the discussion was in terms of athletics, I was simply focused on high school enrollment numbers. The VHSL or VISAA only deal with high school...

    Huge news in Southside RVA

That link you provided is for Liberty University, not LCA. LCA is K-12 and has 2000 students. Paul 6th in NOVA has 1200 students just in their high school. O'Connell and Ireton in NOVA also have similar numbers. I think there are several other private schools in VA Beach and maybe Richmond that...

    Huge news in Southside RVA

LCA isn't the largest private school in the state. Schools like Paul 6th, Bishop O'Connell, and others up in Northern Virginia have larger enrollments than LCA along with incredibly deep donor pockets. And no private school would have to sue to join the VHSL. That was taken care of when LCA won...

Like I said. These reclassed kids will be allowed to play at any public school and not lose their senior year of eligibility. I've seen it happen with many kids. I could name several right now in that very scenario.

Is your question regarding VHSL or VISAA granting a waiver? I can't speak for the VHSL, but I do know the VISAA has an appeal policy if a student is denied an extra year due to aging out (turning 19 before Aug 1st). However, I couldn't say for sure if an appeal has ever been granted. I know the...

    Huge news in Southside RVA

Bishop Sullivan in Virginia Beach (now Catholic High School) did a similar thing several years ago. Took a public school coach who had already been suspended for illegal recruiting (if memory serves me correctly). Hired him from Oscar Smith I think? Then a slew of transfers came to Bishop...

    Huge news in Southside RVA

Reclassed kids will be allowed to participate as long as they don't go over the age requirement - they can't turn 19 years old before August 1st of their senior year. And VISAA follows the same rule. So any transfers who have previously reclassed at a VISAA school will be allowed to play as long...
