The Landscape of NCAA Olympic Sports

It probably helps that coaches can draw on the experience of the covid year era, which posed essentially the same challenges (at least in the head count sports).

The Landscape of NCAA Olympic Sports

I feel like I've read conflicting things about this so I'm hoping you can clear it up. Can a walk-on be grandfathered as a DSA even if they were never at risk of being cut because their team was never at or over the roster limit? To keep your football example going, if a football team only had...

    UNC Gymnastics 2026-2027

Sarah Brown (Penn State HC) just accepted the head coach position at the new Texas State program, which should mean the portal is open for Penn State gymnasts. Something to keep an eye on. I very much doubt this will be a repeat Clemson situation where she takes a bunch of athletes with her...

    5 for 5

On balance I support this rule, but one thing I don't like about it is that it's further divorcing college athletics from academics. It's implying that a bachelor's is a five year process for athletes when it's still four for most, and many universities are experimenting with three-year degrees...

Aaaaaand, there it is. Can't say I'm surprised.

This is where I think we have the potential to really excel across all sports. UNC has a lot of very strong grad programs, and academically-inclined athletes, particularly in non-revenue sports, will be jumping at the chance to get a year of grad school paid for at a strong academic program.

    5 for 5

Probably the biggest near term impact of this is going to be on recruiting, because the new 5-in-5 rule combined with the roster cap creates a lot of uncertainty for coaches. Do we think currently-enrolled athletes are going to be pushed to commit to a 5th year (or not) ASAP so that coaches...

Also no more Olympic deferrals, which will impact swim/dive and gymnastics at minimum (in general, not at UNC specifically)

    Results Tracking 2025-2026

What this tells me: despite all the hand-wringing about money in college sports, academics still matter. There are SEC schools that spend huge on non-revenue sports (Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, etc.) who are nowhere to be seen on this list. Georgia, at #46, is the lowest USNWR-ranked school in the...

    5 for 5

It shouldn't impact any UNC teams in the 2026-2027 year because nobody gets eligibility for next year who didn't already have it. 2027-2028, it gets interesting.

Oh yeah if SMU adds a program it's over for everyone. This is very exciting!

So we did recently host one of the displaced Iowa State incoming freshmen for an official visit. She ended up choosing Michigan State, but that tells me we do intend to keep adding to next year's roster.

    UNC Gymnastics 2026-2027

I agree -- it's really hard to pinpoint the source of beam issues in particular because it's such a mental event. But if I were to try to diagnose the issue (beyond the leadoff issue I mentioned above), I'd point to the fact that Durante tinkered with the lineup a *lot* this season, and I think...
