    I predict Nova > Birds.

If 'Nova manages to beat Kansas, they won't lose to either Duke or UNC.

Jeep, No, they weren't coachless. Fisher legitimately coached them to the title. If you want to say he's an example of a first-time head coach winning the title, that's fine. But the topic came up as a comparison to UNC's Hubert Davis. Davis was a long-time assistant who was hired as the head...

Yes, but he was only interim head coach with no expectation originally that he would be permanently hired as head coach. And he only coached the NCAA tournament games. I'm not convinced he really qualifies as a true head coach.

wkycatfan, That's my take too. If Moore weren't out for Villanova, I'd expect them to beat Kansas, but the injury may be too much to overcome. But I don't think there's a significant chance that UNC/Duke will beat Kansas. Besides the huge emotional energy that game will take, neither UNC nor...

Yes, Tubby had been a head coach before. As I said, Ed Jucker comes the closest to never having been a head coach before while winning the championship in his first year. He was head coach of the Merchant Marine Academy in the 2nd year of its 2-year attempt at basketball. I'm not sure it could...

"Is he the only one? Guess that kinda counts. Be interested to see if anyone was true HC and did it." Seriously? Tubby Smith won it for you in his first year, so UK has been there and done that. Probably the most impressive example of a first-time coach winning it all was Ed Jucker, who led...

John Calipari is 330-77 at UK

Yes, discussing what Coach Cal could do better seems reasonable and necessary. I'd like to put in my 2 cents with regard to how to win championships. It generally believed that "defense wins championships," but that's completely wrong. Almost all champions are ranked in the top10 in offensive...

No, that's not quite right. First, it's a six-win tournament to get the championship. You've got to be a pretty good team to win it. Second, with 350+ teams, it's not practical to play every team. The tournament allows the best teams to play each other. No one escapes that requirement. Third...

I think Coach Cal will, at the very least, go down as the 2nd-best coach on UK history. Awesome guy, awesome coach. That said, if the one-championship-only thing looms as a negative (and that seems unfair), it may be because he's in competition with coaches who have more. Coach K has two...

Nova among early favorites to win it all

I think this is fair. Although the 2016 and 2018 teams had mostly different starters, the 2018 team did have a lot of players who were on the 2016 team, so it was a continuation championship to some degree. But the Brunson angle is greatly overstated. Brunson was a freshman starter on the 2016...

Nova among early favorites to win it all

All it means is that you don't follow basketball outside of UK very closely. And that's OK. Before the season starts, I can't name a single player on most teams either. The main 'Nova players to know would be center Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (will be 1st-round pick next year), point guard Collin...

LOL. I'm an equal-opportunity stats guy.

Nova among early favorites to win it all

At UK he's 31 - 8 (79.4%). I think that's the best percentage of any active coach at their current school.

Is This The End of the NCAA??!!??

Best in women's basketball? Last 5 champions are UConnx2, SEC, ACC, and B12. Last 5 runners-up are ACCx3 and SECx2. SEC is a player, for sure, but not the king. Maybe a better claim in baseball, with 2 of the last 5 champs and 3 of the last 5 runners-up, but the Pac-12 is always strong and...
