In my time we sometimes had Sunday lunch at the hospital cafeteria! Has anyone ever liked hospital food? There was no place to recommend. We used to drive to Middlesboro to eat at Long Johns. Glad to know there is at least 1 now.
It’s gotten some better since then, lol. Our local Chinese restaurant is really good, too. How long have you been away?

Off topic of the original topic of the post, but I grew up in Cincinnati, OH. I lived in Kentucky for 4 years when I was a student at UK. I can name more Kentucky counties than Ohio counties by 3-4x. Not sure why, but that’s always intrigued me. Carry on with your day and the thread.

44 years. Graduated from HHS in 1975. In the early morning following that graduation I watched one friend drown and another drag him from the bottom of a lake on Pine Mountain blue, dead, and revive him. We all survived and left Harlan alive with a nod to Patty Loveless.

My dad was a surveyor in a place where people get rather passionate about an inch of property. He knew everyone including the Ledfords. I first met him at 10 and was in awe of him. In the 60’s he was UK basketball. And the Cats are going to the left of your radio dial. Really? How do you know where my radio is? My dad and I would sit in a dark room and let him paint the picture with words. The best ever, and yea you know it he was from the same place I am, Harlan, Ky.

Holy **** dude. That’s unreal. Sorry to hear of that and glad to hear you’re apparently doing well.

I posted this in the Paddock, but thought there might be more responses here. I appreciate any input.

My wife and I are old, long time Kentuckians. I was born and raised in Hardin County, raised my kids in Jefferson County, and now am back in the country in Daviess County not too far from Owensboro. We are trying to travel to every county in the state in our elder years, and plan on hitting some this weekend. I would appreciate input on the best places to eat/visit in each county. I'm going to try to hit 5-7 counties each weekend this summer. Thanks for the input.
If you make it to Hart County I recommend Devore’s Grocery in Hardyville for a really good greasy burger. If not, they have other things too. Even a different home cooking type meal every day. Closed Sundays.

So, we have some friends that have decided to go with us tomorrow, and are planning to visit the following counties: Henderson, McClean, Ohio, Daviess, Grayson, Hancock, Breckinridge and Meade. Any suggestions in any of these counties would be appreciated. Mainly eateries, b/c it is going to be a long day driving and I'm not sure we will have much time for site seeing.

Please start your reply with the county. I don't know all of the towns and what county they are in.

My brother you are correct. I remember how great it was growing up in the 60’s in Booneville. My best friends were Wade, Sherwin, Jimmy, Dave, Larry, Donnie, Nathan, and Phillip Combs. Greatest place to live at that time. Just wondering is Charles Long still alive?

He is indeed. And he's also still mayor! I think he had a recent stay in the hospital, but he was back home the last I heard and attended the most recent city council meeting. Charles is something else. He frequents Bus Stop Diner pretty frequently.

BTW, I am pretty sure I recognize all of the names you mentioned above, despite you only using their first names. LOL. I''m actually related to the first one. I'm also pretty sure I know who you are. Did your mom and dad operate the old drive-in? If so, I spent many a weekend sitting there shooting the bull with my buddies. I really hated to see it close down, but I am glad I was able to experience it. I think it was one of the very last drive-ins to remain operational in the entire state.

Since you're in Daviess County, you've gotta go down the road to McLean County and hit the Dairy Freeze in Island. Dont eat much before you go. Get a burger with fries or tots and a shake. You'll thank me later.

Well first off, we got 50% more counties (but less than half the people).

Biggest reason, almost every one of those Kentucky counties has a high school named after it. I don't know about every state in the country, but that's not true of Ohio, Texas, Illinois. Seems to be a southern thing. Georgia, Mississippi did it more. And even the states I did a quick look through aren't as consistent as Kentucky is about doing it.

I would bet, 90% of the time a Kentuckian says they're from blank county, they went to that high school.

I grew up in Grayson County. Moved to Hardin 12 years ago. Been all over most of the region you’re traveling today as a land surveyor for 32 years.
Of course, a lot of the “mom and pop” best places likely won’t be open on a Sunday but here’s a few:
Grayson - Farmers Feed Mill - Leitchfield; K’s Cafe - Clarkson (great breakfast).
Meade - Jailhouse pizza near the river in Brandenburg; Little Dave’s Roadhouse - Brandenburg; Otter Creek Tavern - Vine Grove
Breckinridge - Jake’s - Hardinsburg (only open for breakfast and lunch and probably not on Sundays): Green Valley - Irvington

Yes they did. They bought it from Jerry Wilson when I was 5 and his sons are Sam and Arnold. Wade Rasner and I were best friends. Sherwin Carmack, Dave Cole, Jimmy DeBored, Phillip Combs, Nathan Mullins, Donnie Edwards, and Larry Cornett is my Uncle.

I have to correct myself...the Dairy Freeze is closed on Sunday. I forgot about that when I posted. If you could wait and hit McLean Co. on another day, the Freeze will be worth your wait!

If you visit Butler County I recommend the Farm Boy in Morgantown. Farm Boy Burger is my favorite.

Mi Garcia's is good if you like Mexican. I work in Ohio County and when my friends are in town they like Mi Garcia's. They say it's the best Mexican in the area.

Also like Firehouse Pizza. I know the owner and he is always experimenting making different sandwiches. I like his "Daughter Sandwich" (chicken with buffalo sauce, honey mustard, and maybe mayo) and the "Eric Sandwich" (steak, bunch of other meats). There's a really good grill cheese he'll make for you too, but it's not on the menu.

I spend a lot of time in Bowling Green. White Squirrel Brewery is really good. Good burgers. Good chicken and waffles. Lots of great places downtown. Love Steamer for seafood. They have a really good White Chocolate Peach Cobbler. Hometown Cafe uses local ingredients.

We ate at Stellians in Central City last weekend. Really good Deep Dish pizza.

Harper's definitely when you are in Scottsville.

Little Taste of Texas in Glasgow.

Dairy Freeze in Island (McLean Co.) for a burger.

The Sahara Steakhouse in Cave City has a pretty good steak.

I have friends who like Dovie's Restaurant in Tompkinsville (Monroe County). Suppose to have a really good burger.

Hope this helps. I eat out way too much. LOL!

Island burgers will make your tongue slap your eyeballs out. :eyes: Agree with this whole list.

I am for another week. Grew up in Danville, though.

I take it you’re on Cumberland this week? That’s cool hope you visit Wilderness Trail Distillery when you return to Danville. Have a lot of friends and family that work there.

I think what you are doing is really cool OP.

Campbell County

Food

Best places to eat is sort of subjective, so I'll give you some places that have been around for a long time and generally have a good reputation.

° Spare Time Grill, Alexandria, KY (breakfast...they service lunch too and both are good but breakfast is king...family owned and homemade pies are incredile... looks like an old time diner)

° Pompilios, Newport, KY (Italian, scenes from Rain Man filmed here, been around since the '30s)

° Knotty Pine on the Bayou, Wilder/Cold Spring, KY (an older guy I know from Seattle came in for a business meeting and told that he'd eaten at Cajun restaurants all over the country and had never eaten better Cajun...it is very good, gotta get reservations)

°Goetta Fest, Newport, KY (a long history of this area and Cincinnati is Goetta. If you've never had it order it at a breakfast place up in NKY, it is a German breakfast meat and is delicious...there is actually a festival near the riverfront in last summer)

Attractions

Newport Aquarium- trip advisor has it ranked as one of Top 10 aquariums in the country, it is pretty cool, my kids love it.

Fort Thomas Antique Mall- pretty cool place if you are into antique shopping...they also have a bourbon bar inside so worst case scenario....

There is pretty much always something going on in Newport during summer, most of the other towns are small cities with little to do except a few parks and city fesitavls etc. The bigger festivals come to Newport riverfront.

Extra?

Make time to spend a day in Cincinnati too. Obviously the Reds are there and Cincinnati Zoo is #1 Ranked Zoo in the country. They do a great job there. Tons of places to eat and visit. All of Jeff Ruby's places, Krohn Conservatory, Cincinnati Discovery Forest, Kings Island is 30 mins North etc.

I’ll also add that if you like goetta, the pepper pod in Newport is a 24 hour diner with breakfast (at least it was) and they have a goetta omelet that Is probably 3-4 eggs and a half tube of goetta!!! (Big plate full of food).

Also in Newport on Monmouth is an old style chili diner around 8th street (Dixie chili)

From Campbell but live in mason county.
Bracken county- Donna’s (diner in Brooksville)
Coratas- pizza place in Augusta.

Mason county- orourkes pub (maysville). It’s a local bar but it’s a nice place that serves good food (get the pub pizza or the macaroni bites). Clientele is Mostly the business class of mason county.

There is also a nice sit down place called chandlers in maysville on 2nd street (pricey but youre def getting what your paying for)

I am not from Monroe County, but have spent tons of time there, married a Monroe County girl first time. If you go there, be sure to get a Dovie burger at Dovies, a classic land mark. Also try some Monroe County BBQ, it is the best you will enjoy.

If you make it to Greenup County and like burgers, the Corner Cone has the best. Ask for the Farley burger. Named after one of the local coaches around here.

McLean County, Kentucky. Our only claim to fame is our bridge in Livermore. When you leave land and cross the bridge you are in McLean County, you cross over Rough River then Ohio County and Green River and back on land in McLean County. The big blue bridge, enjoy. We love our CATS in McLean County.

Lawrence and Johnson counties. First 32 years of my life. Last 33 have been here in Columbia, SC. Went to elementary school in West Van Lear, high school in Louisa and did three different courses in Mayo. Spent nearly 30 years as a computer programmer after a stint of 4 years eating sand for Uncle Sam. Life has had its ups and downs and will soon be over but I can't complain. The good times and family easily outweigh the rest. Though I do wish I could see those Nat's Creek hills swathed with dogwoods and lie in the sedge looking at the huge apple tree on the hill behind our house in West Van Lear once more. But, memories will suffice. :)
