They're saying he spent a year at the Air Force Academy. Probably explains why he's so poised.

I didn’t realize the one kid played under tubby there. Beard is similar to a guy that coached Texas a&m and after he took them to an elite 8 was hired at a big school. He did it with a bunch of upperclassmen who were rejects nobody wanted for big schools. Beard or Bennett will be the next UCLA coach that’s guaranteed. I’d say kelvin Sampson is probably mentioned in there as well

He reminds me of some Kentucky kid from the mountains the way he plays. Just tough, hard nosed.

Wish we still had a couple of those guys every year.
Tough as nails. Kentucky basketball should always have 1 kid from the mountains. Even he he never played I guarantee he would bust his butt in practice.

Mooney had a very good game vs. Mich St.....but I'd argue with Maxey, Quickley and hopefully Hagans back we don't need a grad transfer PG next year. I think we just need more bigs/bangers which is what Cal is trying to do with Sestina.

In watching Mooney the thing that all Texas Tech guards did well (vs. ours) is Texas Tech switched everything and the Texas Tech guards were strong/tough enough to not let post for Mich St push them down in the lane for easy buckets. Sometimes with the slighter PG under Cal that is a problem is our guards can't switch on bigs as they just get bullied into the paint.

We need shooters with experience. If Herro comes back he’ll fill that void. Would love to get a grad transfer who is a clone of Mooney.

Nothing about wanting a Mooney is about being tough - hell Hagans is tough - he's a Freshman and not a pure point guard imo. Kid has no jumper no middle game and can't finish at the rim - does not have a feel for the game out there

Wanting a Mooney is more about having a fifth year senior who knows how to lead a team and plays with confidence. Also help he shoots 38% from 3
Cal has to look at what Beard is doing and think this may be a easier route now that we no longer get top 5 talent at point or anywhere.

Beard lost 5 of his top 7 off a Elite 8 team. He reloads by Grad transfers - transfers - Juco and returning players. He has older expierenced players

He got him a defensive coordinator in Mark Adams and they are simply the best defensive team in the Country - I love the fact his staff all were Coaching Juco or NAIA at one time - just a great story

Point is why stop at Nate Sestina -keep looking for other grad transfers that can help
Still one and done

Makes no sense. Was Mooney a guaranteed success?

Grad transfers need some obvious minutes to make the jump. There are no minutes available at guard next year at UK.

Sestina coming should tell you something about the rest of this year's recruiting. Basically, that it's over.

If a player doesn't have a 5-Star or 4-Star, or McDonald's label attached, Cal usually don't bother. Good players who aren't one year wonders are out there. You just got to recruit them. They may not all be on the AAU circuit or All Star Camps.

There are C+ physics students that with a lot of hard work, careful development, and diligence on their part toward their goals that could and occasionally do become great engineers but MIT is not chasing them much that I can tell.

What we need is Quickley and Baker to stay and keep developing. They were both really solid guards as Freshmen this season. Question is are they willing to stay and develop. Those 2 as Jr and Sr guards would be awesome!

no they werent. they both had 1 job to do. make 3s. quickley 34%, baker 31%. and really those numbers are that high because of a few games they shot really well. no consistency.

want to know why the patriots play in title every year. each dude does his job, whatever it is, and does it perfectly. if quickley and baker didnt do their job, which was to knock down 3s. if they did, we would still be playing.

This is such a laughable myth. The Eastern Ky mountain region is actually one of the worst spots in the entire nation at producing athletes (and the very few it produces are usually disappointing busts). And public heath statistics show it's also one of the most obese and out of shape spots in the entire nation.

Yet folks from there still cling to this silly myth that they're somehow tougher than most. LOL.

Really? How many Ky mountain kids of Mooney's caliber can you name in college basketball today?

And, fwiw, Mooney is from Lake County, Illinois, which is the north shore Chicago suburbs, and one of most wealthy spots in the country. It's about as different from the place you're talking about as one can get in this country.

so you rather have a Freshman Hagans over Mooney?

Hagans no

But Freshman Teague worked ok.
Freshman Tyus Jones worked ok.
Freshman Wall was pretty good
Freshman Fox.

Kid is clearly a hell of a basketball player. I'd take him on my team. But there are tons of senior point guards that will never see an Elite 8 or Final 4.
