....with yourself for a moment. What would it take for you to consider this a successful season?

Considering that there are 31 regular season games. Potentially 4, but more likely 3 SEC tournament games. And, of course potentially 6 NCAA Tournament games. (With the play in game, technically there are 7 potential tournament games, but that is a remote possibility)

Here’s what I’m thinking would satisfy me:

Beat Kansas. This is very important to me. You can say whatever you like, but for me personally, beating the Jayhawks in Rupp is a huge deal. Beating Kansas would mean that we will have gone 3-1 against the likes of Duke, UNC, Louisville, and the Jayhawks. That’s satisfying to me.

Also, finishing AT LEAST 12-6 in conference play would satisfy me, considering how tough the league is.

Lastly, getting to at least the Elite Eight would be a big deal.

Anything less than these three things happening, I will consider this season subpar.

This team should be in the final four. They have all the pieces you need. Should finish with no less than 30 wins.

Well, JohnnyBomb, this team my still win it all.

I think this team will look great in some games, and not so great in others. It just depends how they continue to come together.

To me, there’s two very glaring problems with this team.
We are definitely lacking both a Superstar and a rim protector.

We have a lot of really good players. I just don’t know that we have enough great players. The verdict is still out on this. Maybe KJ could be. Perhaps TH is a possibility. PJ? maybe?

By the way, was it me, or did it seem like PJ just really wasn’t into it against Alabama?

Beating Kansas is also my desire at this moment. My first desire for this basketball team. It is the most important game on our schedule due to the history of the two schools.

12-6 would be satisfactory and maybe even a surprise. I have no illusions we can win the regular season SEC. Tennessee is just too good. They have the one thing we do not have and will not have and that is experience. If we get hot in March maybe we can win the SEC tournament.

If this team beats Kansas and goes 12-6 in conference play I will be satisfied for the season. Anything in the NCAA tournament would be gravy. As of this morning I am having difficulty getting my spirit into this basketball team. They are like rank strangers to me.

If this team isn't a final four team, then what's the point of doing this?

seriously - we have the benefit of seeing it mid season so everyone has adjusted their expectations to match the product on the floor

but go back to when this team was assembled - even with Duke landing the wunderkinds, this team had everything we were supposed to have - a veteran stud, returning players , depth at the point, good shooters

and now mid season we're talking about happy with an elite 8 - just beat Kansas? only losing 6 in the SEC?

What is not being said is, if this team isn't a final four team, what team can Cal put together that is?

Before the season began, most Kentucky fans believed this years’ team had a strong chance to win another title. Is that pretty much gone now?

I think this team is good but if you watch them and see a Final 4 team with Elite talent then you're kidding yourself. Who is elite on this team?

Agree with these comments, especially the lack of a quality big man rim protector. ...... and yes, PJ seemed to be taking a day off vs Bama.

The point of doing what? Sorry, but that just sounds like such a juvenile and frankly stupid take. Cal and the team should quit because they might not make the FF? We should quit watching? You are free to do so and to stop posting if you want.

Hagans is a superstar. He just doesn't know it yet. Once he starts finishing consistently, we're going to be stupid good.

The thing of it is, before they had played a game, I thought this was bar none, the best team in the ncaa this year. After the Duke game I was absolutely deflated. And Seton Hall kept me at a low.

Beating UNC and UL back to back, built my spirits up again and gave me some hope but nowhere near prior to the season. Yesterday would have bothered me if I hadn’t already been brought down to earth, but as it is, well, it wasn’t a big surprise.

So yeah, I’m basically in agreement that beating Kansas and winning 12 or more in SEC play would leave me pretty satisfied. As far as the big dance, right now i expect a sweet 16, maybe elite 8. But I still think it’s possible to put it together to take it further. I just have to make sure to temper my expectations. I’ve been hurt too many times before....:)

I agree with this. Unfortunately, with the talent we have here, I was really hoping pre-season that we would beat Duke and be in the hunt for another title. The ceiling looks to be Elite 8 at best. At this very moment, Final Four would be amazing.

Yeah, the problem with your Final Four thing, is that you can bet every dime you have that the committee will put us in Duke’s region.
There’s no doubt unless we’re playing really great the last month of the season, then they will keep us away from Duke and that Rat Face Bastard!!

This is the only barometer I need right now: Carolina is a potential Final Four team and very experienced. They dominated them from tip to buzzer. And here is the important part; it was on a neutral court. This team has the potential to play in the Final Four and beyond. They will take losses in the SEC. They will be inconsistent. Maybe a couple beat downs on the road. People will freak out on this board like they always do after a loss, but this team has top five talent and will be in the mix at the end of the year. This team is 5 points away from being 12-1. The sky is not falling

Yes, this team can get to the FF. But whether they do, or not is completely up to them. Cal can't coach heart, and we can't give it to them, either. Just my 2 cents, but I dont think they have it in them.

KJ, and Travis are the only 2 playing with the fire.

nothing less than a Final Four. This team HAS all the necessary ingredients. I hate to rest it all on the shoulders of one player, and a Freshman at that.

But, it really is up to Herro. If he plays well, we win. If he doesn't, we lose. Let's hope that he looks unstoppable in March and April. Is he an "elite NBA talent"? No. But he doesn't have to be, he just has to be a good college player this year. That will be enough.

Still gotta have better coaching.
Yesterday belonged to Avery.
Dare Travis and Washington to score inside against his shotblocker Hall while extending the defense against Herro and Johnson.
Worked pretty well.
Cal had a week to prepare.
What did we take away from them.
KState all over again. They played exactly the way they wanted.
Only went to ball pressure out of desperation.

We haven't had a great rim protector in a couple years now.

I guess the bright side tho is this season (as compared to our last two seasons) our 2 point FG% has actually been fairly good. So while we aren't blocking shots, we are certainly altering things a lot more than we did last two years.

Now if only teams didn't shoot 38% from 3 against us, we'd be in good shape lol

Earlier this morning I said after what we saw in the Bahamas, I said championship or bust. Where we are, and where we need to go, is going to be fun/tough to watch but I believe sec play can help us get there. That said, a successful season this yr, would be an elite 8 with a shot to get to the final four when anything is possible. We play our best as the underdog. Seeding will be important as well. I would take an 8 seed in Louisville than a 4 seed out west. I would take a 16 seed if we happen to play in the “Bahamas” region.
