I'm sure he was pulling for UCLA. UNC would have smoked the Bruins. UK a much tougher matchup for them.
I caught that "unfortunately " remark too and mentioned it to my wife and kids watching. Last year during the championship game he was caught on camera actively cheering for UNC after they tied the game near the end. Smith is not objective enough to be doing a game that UNC is playing in.
