There's many reasons including the hundreds of miles between these ports of entry that migrants don't know about or can't get to. They also get lied to by human smugglers, but even though it's illegal, Under U.S. law, people present in the United States after crossing the border may apply for asylum.
Again, we need to change the laws and this is an opportunity to change them in a profound way. Surely you're not advocating for the maga doctrine of just waving a magic wand now are you?
Then just change the asylum laws. I’m on a flight to Mexico as we speak, so maybe I’ll give front line updates ha.
Seriously though, the problem with the bill is things like the 5k threshold. And isn’t there Ukraine funding in it? Strip all that nonsense out and focus on specifically addressing the asylum laws.
If 2 ports isn’t enough, make it 4. But the idea that someone can meander to an invisible border in the middle of nowhere and say asylum then get launched into the US legal system is absurd. That should happen zero times per day, not 5k.
Designated asylum ports
Wait in line
Present compelling evidence or be rejected on the spot
Wait for your hearing outside of the US
Problem solved.
This isn’t rocket science. But our politicians love to load up bills with a bunch of ******** that decreases efficiency and effectiveness.
