About as good of a first game for the tournament as you could hope for. Multiple players score, looks like everyone that was healthy played, and good distribution of minutes. Who do you want Louisville or Syracuse?
I vote for full overtime and penalty strokes to tire the winner. 2-2 at half

We handled Louisville more easily and Cuse is potentially in striking distance to pass us in RPI if they beat us (but probably not). So I'll take 'ville.

After today's victory, UNC moved up to #12 in RPI for the moment, but Yale, UNC and Liberty remain in a mathematical tie for 11-13, and 14-17 may still be in striking distance to pass us if we lose and they win, in early conf rounds, and of course if any get the AQ with a tourney championship.

Remaining Schedules:
  • .610 RPI #11 Yale vs #2 Harvard in Ivy Tourney Semis on Friday
  • .609 #12 UNC vs either #17 Cuse or #20 ville on Wed (tomorrow) in ACC Semis
  • .609 #13 Liberty vs #19 ODU in Big East Semis
  • .600 #14 Rutgers vs #21 Indiana in B1G QF on Friday (win and they get #4 NW in semis)
  • .599 #15 Lafayette vs #48 Holy Cross in Patriot semis on Thurs (game likely does not affect us, tourney winner will be ranked below us and automatic QF)
  • .596 #16 UVA vs #7 Wake in ACC Quarters today, semis tomorrow (#6 dook or #18 BC)
  • .596 #17 Cuse (see above)
Also, we need #9 UMass to win the MAC to avoid a bid stolen. They get a bye to the Semis on Thurs, and have their final on Sat.

All of this is to say, we still need to win at least one more to start to attain any sort of security, and may still need to win the tourney to be safe.

Assuming Umass will meet Miami for the MAC trophy - Umass won their regular season meeting 3-2. However, Miami absolutely dominated the game.

Umass had 5 shots, 3 on goal….
While Miami had 30 shots, 16 on goal… 17 PC’s.

We really did not play well vs Cuse the first time around. Ryleigh had an off day. I doubt that will happen again. For every game moving forward, our defensive unit has to stay strong to minimize giving our opponent any sense of momentum. That starts with controlling the midfield. The momentum bug has bitten us several times this year.

Today was beautiful hockey by our Heels. Fun game. Sad Reid will likely be out for the remainder of the season!

Total All-ACC team honorees for each of the 3 teams who tied for the ACC best finish:
  • UNC - 3
  • dook - 5, and COY
  • wake - 4. incl DPOY
  • Cuse and ville finished 4th and 5th; each had 3 on the team.
The slights above are not glaring; they are defensible. But it is a trend year after year: underrepresentation. We had more women than any other team who earned ACC POTW honors at some point but were left off of All-ACC lists.

dook's Pam Bustin won her 4th ACC Coach of the Year. She has only won the regular season outright once. She tied with UNC twice but lost to us and thus lost the tie-break both times. She has never won the ACC Tournament. She has a 4-26 record vs UNC. and has not won since 2017, going 0-16 over two of those COY awards.

Erin Matson has only won COY once, when she went undefeated in the regular season at 15-0. I guess that is what is takes for her to win it. In 2023 she lost COY voting to Bustin right after we beat them to take the 1 seed and we were ranked #1 in the country at 16-1 with the single loss in 2OT.

Karen Shelton won ACC COY 12 times, but notably only 4 after Bustin was hired at dook in 2010. We were the #1 team in the country the times she won it. That is again what it takes to give it to UNC. Since 2010 our coaches combined for 12 ACC reg season titles, 11 ACCT tiles (this year TBD), 15 final four appearances, and 5 national titles.

Bustin has more ACC COY awards than Shelton or Matson since joining the conference. Her accomplishments: 3 ACC reg season titles (2 tied with UNC), 0 ACCT tiles (this year TBD), 3 final four appearances, and 0 national titles.

This year, I am not mad at Matson not winning; Wake or dook probably deserved it based on non-conference outcomes. But again; it is a trend. In national coaches poll right now (out today) it is Wake #6, UNC #7, dook #8. So basically a toss-up, though UNC is lower in RPI. The national coaching community routinely gives UNC more respect than the ACC does.

edit: fixed some bad math

Really need to win the ACC tourney now or hope UVA loses tomorrow.

We can’t afford UVA to be a bid stealer I don’t think.

Let’s start out strong tomorrow.

WFU and dook losing today, on paper, makes our goal of winning the ACCT easier, but the flip side is that if we don't win, whoever does win steals a bid.
Yep, I’d say we’re the favorite now but have to get it done now.

BC/UVA can’t steal the bid.
