Re-watched the game and here are some tidbits

Our first down passing was really good thru out the game. It gave us many open targets as ISU was crowding the box with 7 or 8 guys. We need to keep doing this to back off the defense.

Our 4th qtr running plays finally featured some wider runs with the RBacks with some pin and pull blocking and some different blocking where our RBacks were cutting back to good sized holes. The experts said that ISU had a very good front seven and they play a funky Dee with their Lbkrs. Took awhile but the running plays worked late.

Nice to have ex-hawk Paul Burmeister call the game. He always does a very good job. I would like him as Dolph's replacement but Paul has a very good gig with NBC.

I thought the DLine held up well with all the jumbo blocking packages ISU ran. There were not a lot of big holes for ISU runners and they especially contained their QB. Dbacks covered well as there were not any big breakdowns as ISU had one guy break deep early.

The Lbkrs were lights out for the most part. It looked like they had some keys on which Lbkr would be spying on the qb based on the ISU formation.

If they are going with Brown, Iowa needs the read option and the RPO to be established. The RPO specifically could've been highly effective against a loaded box, while drawing in the LBs and secondary.

A second or third level RPO against a loaded box is more often than not a predetermined throw because the run read is going to be taken away based on alignment. Defenses are much better these days at making RPO reads cloudy, especially for teams that don't major in RPOs like Iowa. Not necessarily disagreeing with the concept, but it almost becomes closer to a play action pass which is more Iowa's style.
p.s. Chris Collinsworth, the worst voice in football, things anything with a run fake is an RPO and it drives me FREAKING INSANE!

Paul has done very well with ND, the Olympics, and NBC. Would really like to see him back to take Dolph's place, and I'd take Danan Hughes in a heartbeat to be the analyst. (again, would be tough getting him away from his KC Chiefs gig!)

fair point, usually the RPO is reading the field safety while hitting a WR slant or comeback route. I'm not sure Hank is entirely capable of these quick types of decisions, but if the safety is sucking up, as they were for ISU, it would be a great opportunity for a 1 on 1 with James or Diaz.

I agree. The one angle was pretty clear he was down before the TD.

While I agree, rules/replay expert DID say that, given the camera angles, it would be tough to overturn.

Not sure how they DON'T have a camera on each pylon going straight across the goa line...

It wasn't all bad seeing as how they won the game. Also, the defense looked very good again, Brown completed one of the longest passes by an Iowa QB this century, and their freshman kicker was 4 for 4 on FG attempts earning him an award.

I’m not saying we needed to throw 20 straight passes like MN did to open 2nd half vs Miss st but would’ve nice to see us throw on 1st down 3-5 times in a row or least till they stopped us. Because throws were there all night and Blackledge for nbc kept harping on it for a reason. I’m a Lester fan but not his best game last week. But pleased last 2 scoring drives brown got to the check down or finding Vonnahme and running game finally got some Solid runs something I expected more of.

I agree with Burmeister not because he’s an alum but think he’s so much better than nepo baby Noah Eagle who called TNF in Australia and why we got Paul. Lastly with DL I’ve been very impressed with Hawthorne.

Same way a review can add a second on the clock. The same way a review can call an illegal fair catch signal, even though it wasn't, and even though it wasn't called on the field. Think of the review booth as a kingdom and the review official as the king. That should be easy these days.

Yes, that was definitely mentioned by the broadcasters, and we and every one who is beat does it, but come on throw some flags early in the game to stop it so the teams can determine the outcome

A few things I noticed during my rewatch:

The Oline bent, but never broke. Got some push a few times and almost always gave Hank enough time to throw.

WRs were consistently burning ISU's secondary getting open and at times, wide open.

Brown still stares down his first option

We really controlled the fourth quarter, getting good push on the LOS and the clown's tackling was getting worse.

Despite the inexperience of this team, they showed maturity and poise when it mattered most. We stopped getting self inflicted penalties and toughed it out. The Clowns on the other hand started to break and lose control. This was likely a good game to have early, could pay dividends later on

Vander Zee isn’t speedy? I want a punt returner who makes good decisions and is sure handed. Perhaps that won’t end up being Vander Zee; however, we probably got spoiled by guys like Wetjen and DeJean.

Just “catch the ball” is the conservative nature of this program, which is F’ing lame. With how much we tend to struggle fielding an offense that can get buckets of points, it should be an overwhelming priority to find a quick/speedy guy to return punts and not just catch punts.

I am fine with Evan James if that is the guy who ran one back but he needs to be able to judge those punts quick and not let them bounce.

1. Catch it and dont fumble, take the fair catch when need be
2. Get some return yards.

Buffington really needs to work on his pass defense. There was a time or three when he had his back to the QB and the receiver made a catch. Other than that he will be a good one.
