Down Butler and Carr we weren't a title threat. Year one was a damn good team and they beat a bunch of good teams including the national champions that year I'm pretty sure. Could be wrong on that but I'm not AI I'm just an ol Kentucky fan.

Lots of fans will agree BEFORE INJURIES year one Pope was a title threat. I felt like we could beat anybody. They showed they could beat anybody.

And to answer your first question. Yes if I'm expecting to be a title contender and my team gets beat in the sweet sixteen I consider it a bad year.

I expect every year to be title contender when it comes to Kentucky basketball. Thats kinda what the whole conversation is about. Expectations.

Pope is bad at Kentucky because expectations. Popes not a bad coach. If he was at almost any other school in the SEC and did the exact same thing he's done the last two years ...which is a sweet sixteen and round of 32 exit with a bunch of really good regular season wins and a bunch of really bad regular season losses...also known as mediocre. He would just be another guy doing a good job at those schools.

He's terrible here because we have Kentucky Basketball expectations. That's why that job is one of one. The football job isn't quite a 1 of 1 job like basketball. I get it literally is but surely you know what I mean. But then again it feels like I'm talking to a rival fan and not a UK fan
Lol, no we weren't. We were a mid team reliant on mod majors transfers that had an experience advantage early in the season that was fool's gold. We were just like South Carolina the year prior. They peaked mid January and went to **** after, just like we did.

Missouri and UGA beat that same UF team. They weren't NC contenders either.

No they won't. Just the homers. We were a good offense ehen 3s were falling with atrocious defense. That's why we lost to awful teams.

If a team loses in the sw16, they aren't a contender. Were BYU, Arkansas and Ole Miss contenders?

So if you just expect it, how does that logically correlate to being a contender?

He's a horrible coach wich is why in 10 years he has never won a conference championship or tournament. It's also why only UK was interested in him. He would have never been offered the opportunity at another SEC school. They weren't that desperate.

Yea we were a title threat his first year without injuries. Will never be the case in football no matter how much you laugh.

I don't think Pope is the guy for the job. But even at the he's the coach at Kentucky and that's one of the best programs in the nation.

Football is not and never will be in the National conversation. Basketball is even worth a terrible coach. Most understand what I was saying.
Mark pope’s highest rank in the polls is 12th. He’s never as a coach been ranked in the top 10. Championship contenders💀💀💀💀💀🤓🤦‍♂️😂😂😂😂

We lost to a team we beat twice. We were a contender that year imo. It's March Madness. We were a contender the years Cal got put out in the first round. Those teams were contenders. Lots of teams are contenders.

The difference is football has never even been a contender. Kentucky Basketball has high expectations. Hopefully most fans expect to be near the top every year.

Y'all are coming at me like I'm saying Pope is a great coach and perfect coach for UK. He's a mediocre coach. But Kentucky basketball mediocrity or even at low points is still leaps and bounds better than football. Y'all are the ones reaching.

Popes first team could beat anybody in the country on any given night. They did beat many teams. Kentucky football hasn't beat Bama since 97 and that's all good in football world. Pope needs to be fired for losing to Bama the way he has. I don't know I guess there a million examples I can keep giving to show the difference. Y'all just keep em coming lol

Just arrange one of the easiest schedule in college football like IU did and maybe we can win, is this your point? Sorry but this is SEC football not powder girls schedule that IU had last year. Nothing personal but so tired of hearing how IU did this and that, they had an incredibly easy schedule. Their record and possibly the season outcome would be much much different had they played big boy football last year. Everyone else was tired at the end.
Indiana thumped the best teams in the country at the end, the schedule had nothing to do with it, they were a great team

Maybe but we weren't bottom half of SEC till Mark got here
We could not win the sec and get out of the first round of the ncaa . That's what I call dead . Pathetic from a coach that was here for 12 years to leave it in that state. no excuses this year ,pope has to win this year no doubt .3 years max or Elite 8 and final 4 in the sec season and tournament gets him another year . If you can't win the sec and get to the final in 4 years definitely time to move on . Another pathetic year like last year then out of here

Also he had Kentucky ranked number 4 in the country after a 7-0 start his first year at UK. So you're wrong on that part for sure.
12th is his highest rank at the end of the year. True he did have a 4th rank team in December 😂😂😂😂nice try. Mark poope’s highest rank at the final ap poll is 12th! Pope sucks more than a hooker on 7th street!

Stop! How can anyone defend a person who has never finished in the top 10? He’s only had 2 season with less than 10 losses, he’s been coaching over a decade. F Pope
His best season ever was 20-7 finishing 2nd in the wcc. He’s never won any kind of championship ever at any level as a coach. Pathetic.

I don't think you're understanding my stance. I want Pope gone. I'm just comparing basketball and football like the thread basically stated Stein vs Pope.

I agree Pope stinks and needs to go. We won't be saying Stein needs to go after getting blown out by Bama year one or year five.

He’s 0-4, actually. But I looked it up:

47-45
47-40
45-38
50-34
But you’re right, Pope has never led at the half. That’s sad. And there’s fans completely okay with these results.
I was thinking Pope had only lost 3 games to Oats meaning he has lost 6 total halves. I guess it’s 4 losses and 8 total halves. Worse than I thought. 😱

And his teams quit.

There’s no excusing that. First year and second year.
His first team didn't quit. They were heavily injured and at times, outmanned, but they didn't quit.
Last season's team was lesson learned, it was terrible all the way around, but Pope made the most of it. He won more tournament games last year than your "Hall of fame" agent did his last 4 years here.
Is Pope the answer? Probably not, but at least be fair.

Was Mark Pope not allowed to retain current players, recruits, assistant coaches or bring his former BYU players with him?

The argument he came here with no one is so stupid and easily destroyed with logic.

What HC usually retains former assistants anyways?
Uh, he did bring a BYU player with him, who else did we want from BYU? Nobody.

He had no shot at the players UK had, most followed Cal, or went to the NBA, we knew that would happen when Cal eventually left. We knew the cupboard would be stripped clean.

Correction, those of us with brain cells did. Apparently you didn't. Good luck with that.

Anyone that thinks year 1 was a failure, is someone with a bad agenda… or a moron.

0 terrain???

Weren't we a 3 seed like 2 weeks before we hired him?

Was Pope not allowed to keep current players? Was he not allowed to bring his former players like most other coaches did? Was he not allowed to re-recruit the commitments we already had from Cal? Did he not have the same NCAA portal to build an instant roster like every other coach? Was he not allowed to keep assistant coaches like Antigua who wanted to stay and who recruited very well?

Of course he could do all of those things. He just failed at them, like he has failed as a basketball coach for 10 years.

Stop trying to change the narrative around Pope. It isn't working and only ends up making him look worse.
How many times are you going to quote the same post?

Who was Pope supposed to retain off the 2024 team? Wagner? No thanks.

Also, how many times are you going to use that stupid GIF with the guy covering his mouth? Leadbelly used that same one a thousand times. Get some new GIFs.

The entire sw16 can't be contenders. We also finished like 5th or 6th in our own conference. That is not a contender.

If we haven't had expectations of contending in football we wouldn't have fired Stoops and been disappointed when we lost yesterday. That's literally the definition of expectations.

We don't expect to be near the top as long as Pope is here.

Didn't UK football also when a national championship several decades ago?

I guess we will always have the early regular season win against a Duke team that lost Sion James to injury in the first half and then had Flagg and Kueppel out for extended stretches with cramping in the 2nd, allowing us to go on a late run. I wonder if Pope can get him a banner hung for that?
Well, we won the game, it's better than losing it.

We also beat Florida, who won the NT that year. I guess that win didn’t mean anything either, huh?

It's weird how we have UK fans crushing good wins, just because Pope touched them in their no no place.

I guess losing at home to UNCW, or losing in the tournament to SP and Freaking Oakland, is better than beating a loaded duke team on a neutral.

I don't care that duke had a guy get injured during the game, they still had 7 other NBA talents on their roster.

I guess it's okay to use injuries as an excuse for our opponents, but we can't use that excuse for UK. How many teams get to a sweet 16 with a hobbled pg, no backup pg and missing their 16ppg wing?

Until you can negate it. Why would I stop if it's relevant?

Wagner, Thiero, Ivisic, Burks, Ugonna, Knox, Richmond, Bradshaw, JQ and others all were either our players or recruits that Pope could have recruited, right? You didn't like any of them?

Why does it bother you what gif is used? Thin skin or something?

Wow!!! The sw16? You mean the level UK has been to more than 50% of the time since it's inception and the same level as ARKY, BYU, and Ole Miss?

Were they all national contenders, too?

So a sw16 was a bad season in your words but we were a NC contender?

Dog, no one being realistic thinks we were ever a contender that year. Only the homers think that. We got routed by Tenn in the sw16. We had among the largest points losses of the sw16.
Does Florida win the title two years ago with a hobnled pg, hobbled pf, no backup pg and down their starting sf?

Heck, do they even make it to the sweet 16? They almost lost in the 2nd round that year.

How about Michigan last year. Take away 2 starters and injur 2 more, do they win anything or merit?

I don't expect you to answer honestly.

You didn't want any of them besides Robinson? Really???

No shot? Burks wanted to stay. Antigua who recruited several of them wanted to stay which likely would gave helped, and several of them have transferred away from Arkansas since.

Sounds like your brain cells rewrote some history or pretends some players we just didn't want but still tried to get.

It's someone being honest. Sorry that hurts.

You moved the goalposts here, you didn't say "end of the year" in your initial post.
Weird flex though, considering the SOS and injuries, but cool, I guess.

Mizzour and UGA beat that same UF team. They contenders too? Lmao

It's no different than getting ran of the floor by like 10 teams that have done so to Pope in 2 years. Particularly when it's obvious we just gave up.

Of course you don't care, that would negate the argument it was a solid win.

Did Michigan just win the natty with an injured player?

Also, who failed to recruit backup PGs 2 years in a row now?

Are you dense? Those were Cal's recruits. And why the F would we want Ivisic, Burks, Ugonna, or Bradshaw? They're garbage and the others were going to follow Cal wherever he went. They weren't coming here for UK, they were coming here because they were sold on the NBA by Cal, not UK.

Get some common sense.
