Good:

1. I like the win. A 28-point win is nice, even if it wasn't explosive or dominating. We took over late (as we should have). I don't mind how grouchy some are about how we looked - I love 28 point wins ALL DAY.

2. We have quality talent on offense.

- OL: looks better (still hoping for better and think we'll get it as they gel)​

- RB: Rule please stay healthy! A star is born....​

- WR's: Not as bad as many people are saying IMO. (Yes, get rid of the drops). Some clutch catches today.​

- TE: Luke is beasty. Love the single digit and the way he looks like he wants to knock someone's block off.​

- Colandrea: He is going to make games fun to watch again. Kid is a gamer and is football smart. I am grateful the statue has moved on. He gets plenty of practice standing still now.​

3. Geep Wade is an immediate upgrade we hoped for. Very obvious IMO.


Concerns:

1. Penalties: 6 penalties in the first 17 minutes or so of the season. This seems to be a Rhule trademark. We ended with 9 penalties vs. 2 on Ohio. People ask about our identity - unfortunately this is part of Rhule's identity until it isn't.

2. Defense: Aurich did not impress like I was hoping. Yes, some of it is talent, some is Chambliss being out, and some is a lot of new bodies. They settled down and did better - but I fear what this defense will look like against the top teams on our schedule. Still time to improve, not sure we have the athletes we need to knock off a few top dogs.

3. Drops: No bueno. I'm actually not too worried about this beyond today. Will I be worried if it keeps happening? Obviously yes. But game 1 - I'll chalk it up to jitters.

I will say they not only generated pressure but they did it without blitzing multiple times. The bad angles and poor tackling is more cause for concern if they don’t get it ironed out.

Run defense was skewed by the QB scrambles. Gotta fix that. They picked on Guthrie and sought out one on one matchups with him. The blown coverage supposedly be Charles on that early long pass play was bad but one guy’s mistake. #34 on our D line was demanding double teams. Good to see.

Ohio got worn down by the heat. We rotated guys out of necessity and our depth was the difference in the 2nd half.

Rule is a stud. I think the RB position is well coached and I'm thankful that we didn't bring in some transfer who wasn't going to be a standout to play ahead of him.

First game in a new system. I'm not surprised. Time will tell, but I think we will be well coached on that side of the ball.

We have three WRs who have openly talked about being the star and improving NFL stock. Well, we got one guy who doesn't want to catch over the middle. A little guy who likes to dance more than gain yards. I've never seen a guy catch the ball in stride running straight down the field and then stop and run back and forth 10 yards without gaining a yard. Then the third future NFL guy had 15 more yards to run on a kick return when he also stopped and then ran backwards 15 yards.

All three can make plays but they act as if when they get the ball, they have to get a highlight on tape. If it were me, I would bench all three for the start of the next game. Send a message.

Even average talent teams can get on a roll or pull an upset or two. Just look at Western Michigan. But our culture at Nebraska, I'm convinced, doesn't give us much of a chance to pull an upset because our players don't act like dogs/underdogs. They come from privilege and tend to take opponents lightly if anything.

That's exactly how it went for me as well. I watched Oregon-Boise State. And while I was glad to see Oregon struggle to win, just watching those teams it looked like they were playing faster and one level above. If Oregon comes to play against us, I'm not sure we can stop them.

Yep. And LSU kinda put the exclamation point on it for me. Damn those boys looked big fast and well coached.

Clemson ain’t what they used to be but they’re still a notch above Ohio and LSU made it look like men among boys.

I guess you see what you want. I watched football day yesterday and I certainly didn’t see a lack of speed on offense or with our dbacks. Acting like they were a dropped pass and a missed field goal as making this a meaningful game is ridiculous. We were 2 penalties away from putting 60 on them.

Certainly was my take away in the first half. Ohio looked better coached and their QB more polished. I expected us to wear them down in the 2nd half but….

It wasn’t totally wearing them down. We made coaching adjustments. Especially in the quarterback running game. Dana opened up the playbook and we stopped all the penalties.

Dana will never be what we want, but he did get the run game going late, so that was encouraging.

defensively, I think Ohio's QB was more of a challenge to our defense than we were expecting. It almost felt like we were missing a dude out there.. (i.e. only 10 players vs their 11)

The defense has 2 weeks to sort of figure it out before we get tested again. We need a few guys to step up I think.

I read what I read and then I saw how they played first game out. How players act first game out says a lot about their approach to the season. I know that I'm jumping to conclusions. But hell, what do you want our coaches to do? Call a spade a spade and ride their ***? Tell them to correct that ****? That's what I want. As a coach, you go by what you see. And if they aren't trying to play glory ball, then I'd be real curious what they say that they actually were trying to do.

It's interesting that the coaches who demanded excellence that we've had in the past often benched guys. Then we've had a lot of coaches recently who let kids do almost anything and never get benched. There's always an excuse- like we have "nobody" else to play....

Ummm. No doubt we adjusted some things including some blitzes but we ran 8-10 D linemen out there rotating constantly. Dana committed a little more to the run. We wore them down just as their head coach said after the game.

I’m a pretty optimistic guy but I saw a lot of ugly yesterday. We need Dana to commit a little more to the run game cuz that works.

Haven't gone back and looked at the play but what little they showed on replay it seemed like Charles thought it was zone, while everyone else played man. I think the overall feeling of the game is skewed due to this play. Our fan base has PTSD and that play triggered it. I'll also throw in the TD being called back because of Barney's "blind side" hit. Unnecessary hit to make and flag to throw.

Raiola would have taken at least 5 sacks yesterday. Shoot, we maybe lose without Colandrea’s feet. He picked up multiple first downs to keep drives alive and had that TD.

Charles didn’t realize the ball saw snapped, thats is the explanation I heard . He might be gifted athletic skills but not between the ears. And Rex will always get picked on because he se to be slow to react, they have plenty of DBs maybe move a corner to that safety position

We could look like world beaters at 3-0 and it will indicate nothing about how we will fare against the B1G. Can they beat MSU and Maryland? Can they beat MSU and Maryland comfortably? My range of prediction for this season was somewhere between 4-8 and 6-6. Still on track.

How often do you see a guy with 10 open yards ahead of him on a kickoff return stop and run backwards? How often do you see a guy catch the ball in stride going straight up field stop with open field in front of him, run back and forth? Nobody does it because it's never coached. And no one is coached to do that because it's stupid. I'm sure that they were "trying to make a play", but the mindset that goes along with that is that they must figure that they are elite playmakers who do things that no one else can do. We have nobody like that.

All three are decent players and they will be even better if they play smarter football.

Rewatched the game. Wr's made me want to break the TV. Between Gilmer's drops and the running backwards nonsense, extremely frustrating. Those lost yards will matter in conference play.

It's like having a layup in bball and dribbling back out to try to chuck up a 3. Take what they give you. You aren't taking it to the house every play.

What game did you watch? 10 open yards in front of him? Guys were closing in at full speed. He wasn’t going to make 1 yard. You are creating excuses for a faulty mindset you have created about a couple of players without even knowing what their mindset is. Utterly ridiculous to pre-determine that is their playing culture.

He's at the 18 when he turns. I see around the 25 as his likely end point. We ended up at the 8. That is exactly the kind of thing that has lost us games in the past. One bad snap and now we're backed up at the goal line just trying to survive.

This is D1 football and they are all experienced players. They should know better. Freshman level nonsense.

I still have faith in Gilmer. If he stops the drops the guy is going to be very good for us. Was it a game 1 deal or a pattern?

His reputation at UCLA was few if any drops. Watch this kid, I think he'll have a very good season for us.
