I have been a defender of his. He brought us back from the dead not once but twice. I used to wonder how it would’ve been if he had never left for Tampa. Where would we be now. In truth, now I believe that he hit his ceiling in the Big East. If he had stayed we would have been in exactly the same place as now minus the Elmer Flood years. The question is how much of a hit is buying out his contract and who can we get to come here that wants to be here and how much will it cost. I’m not optimistic.
Success at one level does not guarantee success at another level.
And other than 2006, 1.0 wasn't really all that impressive. Other than Louisville in 2006, he never really punched above his weight and beat the good teams in the conference. In 2009, he beat a #23 USF, but USF ended the season unranked and 3-4 in conference. 2009 is the last year Rutgers defeated a ranked team. We can give him 2011, the 9-4 season and beating a Cincinnati team ranked 25 at the end of the season, but not ranked when Rutgers played them.
Luke Fickell is another example, but even more perplexing. He killed it at Cincinnati, and he has been horrific at Wisconsin.
Butch Jones is another example. Had 2 great season at Cincinnati, and was fired at Tennessee--even with two 9 win seasons.
Funny thing is Dantonio was mediocre at Cincinnati, and he did great at Michigan State, which is an anomaly.
What's interesting is Hobbs did not want Schiano, and he was forced to hire him, and then, well Hobbs was busy with other things and was not going to swim against the Greg fan club at the BOG and big donors, and he gave him the extension.
But back to the Big East- that ceiling was never really that high. It was like a 6 foot ceiling at best.
People mock Flood, but he was given negative resources, and he had an AD working against him from day one, and an athletics department creating a circus sideshow. Not the way others would have handled it, but can't blame him for mailing it in and cutting corners. He still has had the best season as a Rutgers B1G head coach, and nobody cares that they were Greg's recruits.
Greg has had a bad habit of laying eggs against much lesser opponents and doing dumb things to basically lose games over his entire history. Greg is a wonderful man and leader of men. He runs a clean program. But that's the most that can be said for him.
