I personally look forward to the Campbell era in-game threads. They are so comical year after year that my teenage son sits with me and reads them with me and laughs when posters go off the deep end about what’s happening in the game. How many times we fired and anointed Franklin in the same thread. I am sure it will be the same this season. The first time we punt against Marshall, we will be re-hiring Franklin back into the hc position and sending Campbell back to Iowa St in that thread.
It amazes me how many times MC has been raked over the coals so many times before he has coached his 1st game. I'm sorry but I have to question whether some of those people are actual PS fans.

Those happy to see Franklin leave will never want to rehire him. Campbell could go 0-36 over the next 3 years and James still had to go.
Game threads will consist of...
Those that love Franklin and hate Campbell
Those that hate Franklin and therefore love Campbell until they hate him
Those that freak out regardless
Those that try to tell everyone to relax (I'll do that plus explain its not always the QB's fault lol)
The fact is Franklin had to go.

He signed his own death warrant when he went behind the AD's back to members of the BOT to get a raise the AD already said no to. Then after the BOT turned him down, he actively chased the VT job before the season started.

Also, he and some of his assistants started encouraging PS players to transfer out.

But the cherry on top was his refusal to say he supported the university when asked by a reporter if he did or not.

YEP, slick Jimmy two shoes had to go.

I used to be happy with a 10-win season and a New Year's Day Bowl game. Not any more. I now see how Penn State fans demand perfection. FIRE MATT CAMPBELL if he loses one game this year!!! Penn State fans demand and deserve perfection and a national championship EVERY YEAR!!!!

"We're trying to win football games, don't misunderstand that," said Paterno. "But I don't want it to ruin our lives if we lose. I don't want us ever to become the kind of place where an 8-2 season is a tragedy. Look at that day outside. It's clear, it's beautiful, the leaves are turning, the land is pretty and it's quiet. If losing a game made me miserable, I couldn't enjoy such a day."

Screw that thinking. After seeing how Penn State fans were, it's win at all cost. Paterno didn't have his priorities straight.
Yes and let's not forget that Joe never won any big games because he beat Temple, Rutgers, Syracuse, West Virginia and Maryland every year.

There are already excuses that if he goes 12-0 he still sucks and just benefited from an easy schedule.

None here. If you beat everyone on your schedule. kudos. Now, it could end badly because you make the playoffs and would likely face Georgia, Ohio State or Oregon etc. Do you win a big game? 12-0 with a legit playoff win would sell those luxury boxes. Perhaps see PSU jump higher than #23 in recruiting and an uptick in NIL.

Slick Jimmy says thank you. (post above is all fiction by the way). Franklin's income tops 10 million per year at VT over the next 5 years. 8 year 41.75 million guaranteed with a 9 million dollar parting gift from Dear Old State.
On the other side, we are poised at PSU to experience "Excellence at the highest level." and starting in a few days," a "team that the history of this university and its fans deserve." PSU can expect nothing but blue and white skies for years to come.
How could in game threads be anything but a summary of praise for the demonstrated coaching genius of our football team's savior?

Paterno was 2-9 vs Lloyd Carr, 3-6 vs Jim Tressel and 3-8 vs Kirk Ferentz. That's 8-23 vs those three conference coaches. Forget all those times Paterno's teams were manhandled by Michigan.

Don't confuse the BWICAC with the facts. There are plenty of Joe "but" fans here too. As in "I loved Joe, but....." It's difficult for some here to acknowledge that PSU hasn't been a top 10 program consistently for 40 years. You are what your record says you are. PSU is a top 12-15 program. It will be a struggle to be #4 in the Big Ten moving forward. When your coach isn't top 10 paid, your NIL isn't top 10 and you are 7th or 8th in the conference in recruiting, it should clue you into the current pecking order.

I'm staying right here. Who would leave when excellence at the highest level and a national championship is promised?
No one really cares if you're leaving or staying. You're just a simpleton who played football at Mansfield under Joe Sarra.

We all know that you weren't good enough, athletically or academically, to attend PSU. Consequentially, you've become a PSU-envious, elderly troll.

No one really cares about you or your long-deceased wife. Is this really how you want to spend your limited days on this rotating orb? 🎅

Apparently I've got your attention. Knowing that I can annoy a simpleton like you, is more than enough motivation to forge ahead. Go Cylions beat Marshall. What alma mater will be sung at games end?

I’m very fired up for this year. No more ground hog day. Campbell is a great coach. I am a UC season tix holder and been following him for years. It was a crazy hiring phase but I truly believe we ended with the best possible outcome. Time will tell. Let’s give him a couple years before we cry to ship him out!

I am generally feeling good on Penn State football for this season --- we have a "high floor" given we have substantial talent at all of QB, RB, TE, LB and the secondary.

But 2 concerns:

(1) We don't have any true elite superstars ... so that limits our ceiling. I can't see any scenario where we make it past the CFP Quarterfinals. You have to have elite players to get to the Final Four, and we unfortunately don't have any. We arguably don't have ANY of college football's top 100 players (though Rojas or Dixson or even Peoples could get there)!

(2) You mention seeing Campbell coach live, Iowa State at Cincinnati. I am concerned that he LOST that game. And then lost the next week at Colorado. And lost to Kansas in 2024, and the Ohio University Bobcats in 2023, and finished 7-6 with a Top 10 team in 2021 (that sounds vaguely familiar).

I'm not arguing Campbell is a BAD coach, but I will need to see that cleaned up. He has a bit of a track record of pulling upsets and then shitting the bed against some minnow when they get ranked higher. Franklin, of course, had the opposite problem. Campbell's not the type of dude to quit on a team like Franklin did, however!

Overall, I'll go 9-3 for Penn State. A win at Michigan (Michigan is over-rated, and Bryce is not the guy), losses at home to USC and at Washington, and some loss elsewhere too. Which, even with our relatively easy schedule, that's good enough.

Here's to getting some of those truly elite players onto some down-the-road PSU teams.

This is good and though I’m hopeful….

I like CMC, best possible choice after a messed up search. However, I have about 50% of the passion for this years team. I will always love PSU and PSU football. But this year the excitement is not there. I usually make it to one game and watch the others religiously on TV wherever I am. But I won’t make it to a game this year.

I don’t see significant talent on this team and I think it’s a huge transition year with players and coaches having too much on their plate to really come together and perform. I think this could be sloppy, littered with communication errors, and quality depth issues when injuries occur. I think it’s such a tall task with this roster and all the transition.

But I will watch with hope and I want to be happy for the boys. I get joy when I see them enjoying wins. Just love it for them.

One thing I do know: the players always want to win. They can probably shake off a loss more readily than we fans can but while there’s time on the clock they’re out there fighting.

Hey boss, no offense to you, please don't do this. I'm a nobody, so you certainly don't have to listen to me, but I'll kindly ask to please leave the overly personal stuff out of it. I, and I'm sure countless others here, are also as annoyed with his repetitive, negative trolling posts as you are. If not, more so. I do understand your frustration.

That said, I think you're off the mark a bit. I don't think he's PSU envious. Because he coached, he thinks coaches should be protected from criticism. That's why he paints Kraft as a villain and Franklin as a saint. Most of us understand Kraft's rah-rah speech was just that, he believes he's pointing out some huge hypocrisy each time he brings it up. He doesn't think people that coached should be allowed to have an opinion or be critical of coaches. He also previously blamed JF's failures on the fans in the stadium for booing the results. Logic just isn't going to work in this situation and he's just going to be more repetitive if you go personal or engage.

It's a shame, because every once in a while, he does fire off a post that's worth reading. He could add so much quality to this board, if he ever finds his way out from being stuck on repeat.

I think Campbell can win with talent. The schedule this year provides 9 wins. However, fielding a roster ranked #6 (spending)in the conference, won't yield improvement moving forward.

This was going to be a transition year no matter what. The schedule will keep PSU interesting. Let's hope Kraft finds the money to match his big mouth and in turn gives Coach Campbell the chicken he needs to create chicken salad for 2027-28.

I see it differently. I believe he's gotten a great deal of good will and compliments, for as you point out, someone who has yet to coach a game.
Human nature being as it is....it's only a matter of time until Coach Campbell will be offered help with his job by the omniscient and omnipotent BWICAC. In competitive athletics, coaches, players and officials are not perfect. Only fans attain that lofty goal.

I’ve actually received many compliments over the years for having graduated from Penn State, and not from Penn Staters. Then again, those folks were probably shocked that I obtained a college degree once they got to know me. 😞
