There were plenty of reasons. The media had been talking for months about an impending rules change. It's why thousands of college athletes entered their respective sports' transfer portals last spring when they had no eligibility left. If Mitchell wasn't paying attention, then his agent should have advised him to. That's an agent's job.

But Mitchell didn't choose a good agent did he? No, he hired his brother to be his agent. And his brother never advised him to enter the portal like Seth Trimble's agent did, or Aberdeen's agent did, or countless others. So here we are.
Nowhere in the rules does it state that players ruled ineligible, must still enter their name in the portal JUST IN CASE. You do realize that, right? Even the most obtuse lawyer can argue this. You’re trying to argue a point that doesn't matter, even the SEC will agree that Mitchell was not originally eligible to return to college ball when the transfer portal was open.

He just recently put his name in the portal when it opened back up, but he didn’t do it prior to the end of his senior season and before the NBA draft which means he cannot transfer from one SEC school to another per SEC rules
I bet if you think hard enough, you'll figure out why Mark Mitchell didn’t enter his name into the portal prior to the end of his senior season. I have faith you'll figure it out.

While everyone is defending a player because they want him on THEIR team, under the old rules he wouldn't have been eligible and he should stick to that. Otherwise, he's just perverting the rules, contributing to the collapse of the system. The system needs to be fixed NOW, and allowing these players back isn't the way to go about it. You can like a player (I like him) and see that what's happening in the grand scheme is just wrong.
Under what "old rules"? Are you talking about when players had to sit out a year if they transferred?

He put his name in portal
This will be the key decision. The courts opened "the portal" for him in August instead of in the spring because the NCAA changed the rules. Will the SEC have to consider the special portal the courts opened as the equivalent of the Spring portal? If they don't, is this a violation of the TRO?

The sec transfer rule also can be exempt by Sankey. Since the TRO reopened the portal that can be easily used as the real portal window. Also Mitchell can argue he didn’t enter initially because he was going to return to Mizzou if 5 for 5 passed but they instead filled his spot leaving him no other option after the fact. I believe Kentucky has already gotten the transfer approved as long as the TRO holds up. No way they had zero contingencies in place for a rule they knew before he committed.

This would make the most logical sense when factoring in that UK voted for this rule as well. Outside of that it really makes no sense.

Obviously you and me and other people see how shaky thin this case is once presented from Mark Mitchell getting unfairly screwed.

the UNC guys keeps operating off of signatures and deals made months/ years ago like that even matters in the age of lawyers, when if you just barely look at you can tell it would be viewed on the merits of being personal attack/ taking money from Mark Mitchell

If Xaivian Lee Plays one game for Gonzaga then Mitchell is playing for us
Were you around when “Sosa” now “Doodee” said he was taking his kid to a tee ball or baseball game and then wanted to meet a guy he was arguing with (not me but I was watching the meltdown) amd said he was going to beat his head into the concrete? It was an anger meltdown of unprecedented proportions.

Lmao this is silly. So EVERY class since the 2019 class gets an extra year EXCEPT the 2022 class?! From the 2019 class until infinity gets at least five seasons except the 2022 class. In what world does that even remotely seem fair?! That makes ZERO sense!

Just about every rule they've tried to enforce has been challenged in court and frequently they're smacked down. This will go before a judge.

I'm tired of the NCAA for not applying their rules across the board to ALL teams, and taking their sweet time on vetting the players, depending on whether it was a program they liked or not.
Agreed. My biggest gripe with the entire system is selective enforcement and selective exceptions being granted over the years. The facts on the ground are that this is no longer about education, even in theory. This is a business where the economics are evolving.

That's the crux of it all, right there.

The NCAA could have made the 5 for 5 rule to INCLUDE the class of 2022. The upcoming year is ... 2026 - 2027. Math says if they were a freshman starting in 2022, then they should be ok to play for the 26-27 season. That's five years right there.

Why the arbitrary cutoff for 5 years EXCLUDING those in 2022 ? It seems arbitrary, unfair.

They couldve saved a whole lot of litigation and confusion over the process just to say : the 5 for 5 rule will start this year, so anyone that played from 2022 can be eligible this year. And as Cow shows, it goes back to 2019 and the covid classes.

Why prohibit anyone from the 2022 class? They're penalizing the players for no valid reason.

Common sense should dictate that they make it to include the 2022 class.

But if sense were common .....

I say take them to court and fight it all the way, if needs be. They will have to move the goalpost to keep Mitchell (and others) from playing.

I keep flashing back to last year and Bama' bringing in Bediako. If the NCAA and SEC were going to do anything about the pro players coming back to college, they should've made that the litmus test. But they didn't.

Maybe Im wrong about all of that, but it seems like the NCAA is arbitrarily making poor decisions, they are rudderless and without direction in everything they are doing. They have lost and ceded control in so many ways, I say the big conferences create a new alliance and leave the NCAA.

The NCAA as a functioning body is already dead

All the SEC Presidents, including UK's President, today reaffirmed their commitment to this rule. That's what this memo means. It means there is no way around this for Mark Mitchell in the SEC. Neither the UK President or the Mizzou President went to bat for him. They folded and voted unanimously. What's he going to do, sue and say "I want to play at UK"? The judge is going to say "UK voted to support the rule that you don't play. Case dismissed."

Your President just screwed Mitchell and Pope.

Mitchell can't return to Mizzou, they are out of spots. His only option now is to find a non SEC school that hasn't started classes.
Question: Is UNC still handing out degrees for players in programs designed to allow the functionally illiterate to attend College?

Don't let Tarheel see this, he'll just say that he should have entered the portal while he was ineligible and then die on that hill.

I guarantee you can’t find 1000’s of 5th year players who are in the portal for this year before the 5th year was approved.
I had to put the guy on ignore for my own sanity and advise you do the same. Here’s the actual data for you to make your own conclusions for D1 men’s basketball transfers. Remember this is the first year that this could even be a topic or thought.

2754 entered the portal spring of 25
2605 entered the portal spring of 26

Womens basketball also saw a drop this year. So yes there were some players that entered illogically(mainly due to having absolutely no pro prospects) but obviously there wasn’t some huge surge of players doing it.

Also people need to stop lumping Aberdeen into this conversation. He had a specific argument for his freshman season not counting against his eligibility thus this upcoming year being his senior year. That’s why he entered and committed during normal timing.

The 5th year guys who entered the portal when they were supposed to, showed that accomplished absolutely nothing as none(or very few) of them committed to play at a school before they were granted eligibility through one of the court cases.

That’s old news. UNC has many more problems, their fan base won’t admit that the school made a horrible coaching hire for basketball. That will be evident soon as the Tar Heels keep sliding down the ACC hierarchy. Don’t even get us started on the national joke the football team has become up in Chapel Hill.

We'll see what happens. But if this is what the SEC does, well, the hell with the SEC. This is just one more reason in a long line of them to hate this corrupt piece of crap conference. Mitchell should get his chance to play. I'm tired of the games that the NCAA and SEC are playing.
This is like taking a lollipop away from a toddler. If you want to wag your finger at someone, do it with LSU. If it wasn't them being egregious about how they were going about this, RJ Luis, calling up NFL teams to find cut players, it probably wouldn't have escalated like this. Yes, the SEC is corrupt and the commissioner is trying to smother it. It isn't corrupt for not letting Mark Mitchell play. It's better for the sport.

The sports are corrupt. All this transfer every year and play at 5 different schools and let former pros come back. Its such a joke. Its semi pro ball now.

Ill still watch but its no longer college basketball or college football. These aren't kids, they are paid mercenaries and pros.

As for Mitchell I hope he plays. We need him to win anything that matters. I also wanted this season to be one without excuses but if he doesnt play it will be an excuse.

Mitchell had no reason to enter the portal since the NCAA hid the fact that they were planning to give EVERYONE but the 22 class an extra year of eligibility until after the portal. Hope Mitchell and UK both fight this dumbass ruling.
Yes THIS will be his only chance to appeal and its a legitimate one. Basically I would have followed your rules and had full intention to do so but with the new court ruling thought it wasnt necessary. If he takes this to court again judges are prone to give grace to those whose intentions were right so I can see this still working out. And if it does it shouldnt cause a firestorm around the league becuase its not a case of a guy (or UK) trying to skrit the system, its a case of a kid getting caught up in the chaos of all the changes swirling around

I disagree with the very last part, but agree with everything before that.

Actual pros, anyone who signed a pro deal, anyone who left college early to declare for the draft absolutely shouldn't get to play again in the NCAA.

The 2022 guys who did nothing but play 4 years and graduate did nothing wrong, they didn't declare for the draft, they couldn't withdraw from the draft. They were under the impression that their college careers were over, no reason to enter the portal. Every class they played with as Fresh, Soph, Juniors, and Seniors got 5 years (or more) that they had to compete with for Roster Spots, playing time, and NIL funds. Every class after them will get 5 years. There is no reason they should be punished for the NCAA (or the conferences for that matter) making up rules AFTER the fact and trying to apply them to previous situations. This isn't about Mitchell, it's about all the 2022 guys who couldn't go pro, especially at smaller schools, who had to sit behind grad seniors and 7th year red shirts and now they get told, well they were allowed to, and the guys currently enrolled get to as well, but you all, nah, F you guys. Get a job.

So if they stonewall Mitchell, that will now be twice that the NCAA screwed us. Kanter and now Mitchell. Cost us a title in 2011 and probably a Final Four in 2027.

I mean, at this point, is there even a reason to keep watching this crap show called college basketball? They've decapitated the passions of entire fan bases at this point.
Can’t disagree but the lessen that should be learned here ….you shouldn’t count on blind luck to add your best player in August just like you shouldn’t count on your best player to recover from a catastrophic knee injury in 9 months.

Pretty much.
Honestly, I don’t believe it will get that far anyway. Classes start soon and Mitchell will have to decide very quickly if it’s worth taking a chance on being ineligible at UK or returning to Missouri or somewhere like UL for less money.

I don’t think that bodes well for us .

The situation for Mitchell is not the same as what other conference teams are attempting and you know it. The proximity and timing of the announcement is suspect as well.

Accusing me of being a toddler about this is ridiculous, considering the history of the NCAA and the SEC when it comes to personnel and eligibility issues for UK sports. It is better for the sport when the NCAA and SEC do the right thing.

The last day to enroll, add/drop classes at Lil Brother was last Friday, AUG 21st. Even if Mitchell wanted to, he couldn't attend U6 this fall. He'd have to wait until spring semester.

That is the ultimate problem guys like Mitchell will face. If they can't transfer in conference, and can't go back to their original schools, the window is too late to enroll for the fall at most universities. There won't be a "special" enrollment period that makes them eligible for fall sports.

Is it the right thing? Or is it because it advantages UK? Would you be in the same position if Pope exhausted his roster spots and it was Tennessee mopping up an incomplete roster with these kids? Be honest.

There is a reason the only schools even getting involved with these kids are SEC and B12 schools. The SEC has had a long reputation for being the criminal conference, prompting NCAA attention.

So many ways to reason this - players of Mitchell's caliber have made bank on NIL the last 4 years. We can't cry them a river. At some point, you have to draw a line from the free for all. What about players that only got 4 years in the 2010's with no NIL? Should we start granting them additional years? At some point you have to draw a line. Allowing a pool of old players into the pot in August is a disservice to the many schools that actually built rosters under the given rules at the time. This is awarding schools that couldn't do that an unsuspecting life raft.

Thats my one issue here if this goes south. Im not even gonna criticize the staff but its a valid question you ask.

Mitchell will play this coming season. SANKEY or anybody else has zero power when it comes to courts. They can make all the rules they want. If a judge says he eligible then he's eligible. Some people never dealt with court?

The pathetic part here is that two weeks ago Mitchell wasnt even on the radar and the team was filled out and just fine but now if he doesn’t play at UK, a handful of insufferable jerks will go right back to saying the season is going to suk, Pope suks, my dog ate my homework blah blah blah, etc.
I don't think it will "suck", but this team is certainly not nearly as good if Mitchell can't play. That much is undeniable.

Because literally thousands of players, across every NCAA sport, in Mark's class chose to put their name in the portal last spring. He could have. He chose not to. And now the UK President ruined any chance Mark had of playing at UK.
Willing to bet? If he never plays here I’ll never post again. If he does play here you never post again. Deal?
