QB Battle: Jeremy Hecklinski appears to have passed Hank Brown on the Depth Chart. QB was NOT a Transfer Portal Priority per KF on Dec 18

No, that task has fallen to the guys who can't stop talking about one screen pass.

That aside, I think it's easier to coach a guy up on managing his risk a little more than getting a guy to make a throw he's hesitant to.

Granted that one screen pass is hard to forget about....Sort of like @EvilMonkeyInTheCloset will never forget that ONE missed FG in the 1998 NFC championship game..... Anderson hadn't missed all season long until that point....

<<I just hope whoever ends up QB2 doesn't the transfer portal>>

Like saying, "I hope the second-hottest chick stays at the bar after the guy she wanted picked her friend instead". It's the norm now. Only question is whether or not QB2 stays out the season so QB2 is actually available...
Only small minded People are not trying to take both home for a 3some

just sayin'
It was perhaps the biggest unforced error play in Iowa football History , it defintely was in Indiana's , Iowa beats Indiana if that is completed and Indiana's road to and thru the Playoffs is altered immensely . Not matter what everyone will always remember Brown crappin the bed on that play the same as everyone remembers Ernest Byner's fumble at the goal line against Denver , Byner never escaped the shadow of that play

Many give KF crap for turtling up and being too cautious in games.

However, this was Tim Lester, postgame, vs Indiana: on the screen call on 3rd & 5 w/ 2:06 to go in the game, "it was there. It would've been a touchdown."

It was a play Hank Brown, a DI QB, should have made. It was an easy throw. The coaches were playing to win with a play that was perfectly set up & according to Tim Lester would have resulted in a TD.

The next play (on 4th & 5), of course, was a 42 yard missed Drew Stevens FG.

I like Lester but the LB was going to light Moulton up if he caught that. The linemen completely whiffed on him
The play isn't to throw it leading the receiver to the sideline. On a rb screen ideally you're not leading him anywhere. Catch in place, assess, go. That pass is completed where moulton is standing and he has a free lane for a minimum of a first down. Stevens likely then misses the kick as time expires and Indiana wins in OT because why not.

Or you could use your own eyes. But you do you.
Hindsight is always fun, but if the ball were placed in front of the runner rather than behind, that backer is blocked. I do agree even if he caught it where it was thrown, that play was probably blown up.

I really would hope that Kirk gives his input BUT Lester makes the choice.
I think it will be Lester's choice, but based on Kirk's expectations of who that choice should be.

To put it another way, in my job, I generally know the type of work my boss wants and expects. So I do my work on a daily basis with those expectations in mind. Yes, the work is still my own. But it's shaped by what my boss expects.

Good leaders are highly adept at getting what they want even when it's technically someone else's decision. And Kirk Ferentz is an excellent leader.

if the ball is thrown correctly, it leads Moulton more in and up the field. He goes for at least the first.
I don't dispute that. I would say Moulton may have drifted wider than he should have. I don't doubt it would have gone big if it was executed perfectly but that is true every play every game.

Lester, in a press conference, said it would have been a touchdown.

I think I will go with his opinion. :)

Sure glad we have anonymous posters disputing what Tim Lester said about that key play in the Indiana game.

After all, what does Tim Lester know?

A helluva lot more than any of us.

Again, it would have been a touchdown. Not my words. Our OC's words.

As was stated above, if he puts the pass in front of the RB it is a TD, but the ball was thrown behind, even if he caught it the backer was right there.

yep; it was a great play design; just poorly executed by the QB

The discussion that follows was from April 23, 2026, where Scott & Chad were discussing that Tim Lester has a package of plays that he's never been able to run UNTIL NOW because he finally has "the horses" who can make the plays.

We're going to have a more explosive offense!?! Why? Well, Tim Lester seems to think we NOW has the play makers on offense.

I know, I know...we will have to see it to believe it.

Check this out & watch:

Accuracy and low turnover rate is what I hope we get .

Accuracy means, among many things, hitting the receiver in stride so that he can get yards after catch

@Franisdaman Where in My post did I in anyway advocate for anything but it was a huge unforced error, Great play call and crappy QB to run the play , That throw a 6th grade QB completes and it totally alters the rest of the Season for Iowa, Indiana and the Playoffs , I love the job Lester has done and am one of the advocates He should be the next HC .

Even if the block is whiffed, I like Moulton’s chances to make him miss there. That is a TON of space, you rarely get that in the Big Ten.
A ton of space? Watch it again. If he catches the ball and turns #21 is right there to clean him up. It was far from a sure thing. Maybe? Sure. But not the guarantee some of you guys are convinced it was.

Moulton was turned around looking back toward Brown before the ball was thrown. There was no throwing it "in front of him." If the ball hits him in the hands, he still has to catch and turn around to run upfield. Good chance #21 nails him.

Back on my soapbox again, I'm pretty sure we don't score a TD on that play based on where blockers were, etc. We can agree to disagree yet probably gets the first down but not a TD.

there was 2:05 on the clock as the pass is released and there are 2 blockers with inside leverage and 1 defender outside, with the catch which should have gotten the 1st down with an inside cut and use of the blockers the clock will stop for the 2 Min warning and Indiana was out of TOs , unless Stevens misses basically an XP Iowa wins that game
