What's the best job you've ever had?

Not the one that paid the most or had the best benefits, etc, but the BEST one - the one that was the least like actually working, and the best time?

When I was home for college one summer a buddy got me a job refereeing sand volleyball leagues at this large sand volleyball complex/bar here in D/FW. The leagues were all company rec leagues where the emphasis was on drinking, rather than the quality of play. Teams would bring me pitchers of beer before the games. I only had one time the whole summer where someone really wanted to argue one of my calls, and everybody on both teams told them to shut up. Also, I got paid in cash, which was nice.

I was late to a shift once and the found me in the far pool getting busy. Was told "when you're done, you're on-call."

We had an RA one year who would lock himself in his room with his GF on Friday night and we wouldn't see them until Sunday afternoon. The belief is that they spent the weekend dropping acid and, I guess, fornicating. They didn't even come out to pee, so I'm guessing they were peeing in the sink? No idea what they while they were holed up in there. In any case, he was a cool enough guy who never got any of us in trouble for anything, so we reciprocated and didn't tell anyone about his hijinks.

I had a basically no show job during a summer in high school.

My buddie's Mom (no pics) was an office manager for a medical office and they had a storage unit with medical files a mile away and we would sit there for hours and get paid for doing nothing.

Weirdly, both of my deployments...sucked being away from family, but that sense of brotherhood and 100% job satisfaction has never been replicated!

I can't think of one and I've been with my current company since I was 24 (20 years). Probably the job I had before going into management. Still paid well, problem solving, less of other people's issue, etc.

Having your buddies hook you up with stuff like that back then was the shid. A friend of mine worked at the meat counter at Hy Vee back in high school and college. He'd package up filet mignon cuts and just label them as twice baked potatoes for us. It was a thing of beauty

When i was at FSU I officiated a lot of IM sports...football, soccer, softball. I was pretty good, so they'd use me to call some of the games that had the potential to get heated (i.e. games between rival fraternities). As a bit of a thank you for taking those games, I also got home plate for a lot of DG & Tri Delt sorority games. It's tough calling balls and strikes when you're staring at a nice *** in a pair of skimpy Dolfin shorts.

I'd have to say the simple ones in general. I spent a couple summers working with my dad conducting geological surveys around Tallahassee. Hot hard work but spent time with him doing what he loved. One of the areas we surveyed is now Heritage Grove area off of Ocala. (edit, for those that don't know, that is where all the Frat houses moved to).

I also spent a summer in the Chianti region of Italy working on a site that dated back to the Etruscans. It has Roman and pre Roman components. That was a lot of fun, hung out with coeds, lots of Italian food, very unique cultural experience. If you ever go to this museum, https://www.cetamuradelchianti.com/, many many images in the museum, I am in one of them. Uncredited of course. Was able to visit the museum on it's opening back in 2023.

Front desk at a gym during grad school. No stress, super easy, worked with hot women, we were allowed to watch movies and sports on the front desk computers, and free gym membership.

Added bonus: the gym owner also owned a bar, which was attached to the gym, and we got big discounts on food and beer. If the owner wasnt there, we usually got it for free and just threw in a nice tip.

Muni course so lots of outings, which meant lots of dudes buying lots of beer from the cart girls, which meant left behind beers for me especially for night golf outings. Got to play free golf, be outside, collect free beer, and have fun time with one of the cart girls. All in all, a pretty good summer.

OP said it wasn’t linked to compensation, and it was having the best time doing the least amount of work. Mine was an ode to my youth 30 years ago working outside at a golf course before my sophomore year in college, playing free golf, drinking free beer, and having sexy time with a beer cart girl once the sun went down. Sounds like a great opportunity which OP had in mind.
