I get it. I live in small town Iowa and love it. Very low cost of living. I have a golf course less than 5 minutes from my house that I can go to anytime (well, at least Mar-Oct) no tee time required. Lake house 45 minutes away with great crappie, walleye and bass fishing plus tubing and jet skiing for the kids. Des Moines is an hour and a half away for a long weekend with plenty of nice restaurants and gets enough concerts to scratch that itch.

And now retirees pay little to no state income tax. Not there yet but like I said I get it.

Well, we've just recovered from a hellscape winter ... it was awful. Didn't see grass for months upon months. Snow on snow on snow ... with bitter cold. Before that we actually had a series of very mild winters, with minimal snow (thank you, global warming, for that reprieve ... Mid-Atlantic-living friends and family were jealous of how little snow we were getting) ... that was after some apocalyptically snowy winters probably a decade or so ago.

The one thing we do have here in Massachusetts, is civilization. You get that cold and snow in Iowa, that's it. It may be years before someone finds your frozen body. Here in Massachusetts, we can just go enjoy some indoor activities, or walk a few steps to someone else's house and socialize. Or if you're dumb enough to want to go out in the cold, we have plenty of mediocre skiing and other outdoor winter activities nearby. Sure, Iowans can stick corn cobs in their nether regions, and have conversations with their scarecrows to pass the time ... but other than that, what else is there?

But, then again, no Massachusetts folks are sitting here saying "Look! This is a great place to retire! We ARE somebody! It's not as bad as we all know it is!"
