Hey Craig - this guy Trent Thornton. You should consider him in high leverage situations more often. Like two nights ago.
He will be this decade’s Heyward.
And I will forgive him if he gets us a ring like J-Hey.
He’s the only reclamation arm that has worked out this year. Normally the Cubs grab a dozen or so every offseason and 2-3 become solid contributors. Thornton is limited coming off of his Achilles injury, that’s why he is rarely used on back to back days.
It only took him half the freaking season but maybe Bregman’s got this baseball thing figured out.
Shockingly, having our number 3 hitter go 3 for 5 improves our chances of winning. Who knew?
The Cubs have the 3rd toughest schedule in the second half. Though, this could change as some teams go into sell off mode. I'd love to catch the Tigers after they trade away Skubal.

Hopefully Skubal is pitching against Detroit when the Cubs play them.
BTW, Miz has the dreaded "arm fatigue". Who knew throwing that hard would make your arm tired. Maybe the Brewers should talk to Nolan Ryan about how to throw hard while pitching.
Yeah. I am not pro injury for the players of other teams, but at some point injuries have to catch up to everyone. The Brewers have had two key starters miss starts this week. Woodruff seems to be in a bad way, and home for the season.

I think Miz is a load management thing, Brewers saw a chance to give him 2 weeks off. Harrison sounds like a minimal IL stay. Woodruff is making an announcement on Sunday - at minimum I'm guessing he's done for the year, more likely announcing his retirement.
They also dealt for McCullers from Houston over the break, which feels like throwing spaghetti against the wall
There are some pretty big trade deadline implications here. Milner had proved himself to be a quality middle innings reliever. And, as Counsell mentioned, it wasn't a baseball injury. I count on him coming back and being effective. What about Maton? Was it the knee injury that made his pitching suck? If the rehab and ASG break squared him away, that's big.
If things trend well with Taillon and Cabrera, I still expect them to add a starter. How aggressive they go in the pen will be down to the wire with Palencia, Brown, and Steele. If either Brown or Steele pitches this year I think it's out of the pen.
He needs to go to the pen. He's a bulk innings guy. Once through the rotation is enough for him. We've been lucky he's been so effective the last two years, and consumed so many innings after other pitchers have been injured.

The Cubs signed their compensation pick for losing Kyle Tucker to free agency, slugger Myles Bailey of FSU. What are we getting? He oozes power potential, that's for sure. Can he field 1B in the majors? Can he learn to stop striking out?

I think Cubs got a great one as long as he bounces back from knee injury.
Can he field? The big question is can he control the strikeouts. He could be the replacement for Busch
He seems solid to me but did. It watch enough to really be able to judge just how good he is at that position.
It was his ankle and not his knee. And yes, he fields his position well and hits to all parts of the field. He does need to cut down on the Ks but I think he can.
Tuned in to the last few innings on Marquee and listened to Rick Sutcliffe.

Funniest comment was saying what a great idea it was for Suzuki to take a pitch so PCA could steal 2nd when everyone in Wrigley knew that was going to happen.
Then refusing to criticize Bregman for swinging at ball 4 that would have won the game.

He had given up most HR in mlb when he went on IL and picked up where he left off. May be coincidence but they ended that horrible stretch shortly after he went on IL 6/9 and have had a much better winning pct since. I certainly haven't missed him
