Pope's SOS and performance so far at UK

I’ll be frank… do I think it is LIKELY that Pope develops into a coach that resembles Coach K, Hurley, Sampson, etc? No I do not. Those types are rare, but it is the level of coach we hope for given our program’s history. I think that’s why Pope having a shorter leash is fair — I certainly don’t support the idea that he’ll be here no matter what. I think he will need to perform this year or the fanbase will mostly turn on him. I just don’t think we have seen enough to honestly say how good/bad he will be at Kentucky yet. There have been very promising things to hang your hat on about him and there have been struggles that we aren’t used to dealing with in a coach. Time to perform and prove he can do it.

As for being 54 — he’s still really young in terms of being a head coach. I don’t personally believe him being as old as he is affects him assuming he: 1.) Is willing to adapt to the current landscape of CBB, 2.) Has the awareness to know what works and what doesn’t, 3.) Has the traits to continue growing. Being honest, it’s tare to see coaches start their careers so late, so it’s hard to really say how much it affects his ability to succeed. But we have seen coaches become elite at an advanced age before so there’s precedence on that front.
The only thing I would add is to go further and say it's extremely unlikely he turns into a truly great coach. He's simply not a bad coach, he's a mid coach for the mid basketball program Kentucky has had for the last decade. They fit each other extremely well.

All time leader in wins and winning percentage, 2nd most national titles, tied for most national titles ever if you count Premo-Porretta and Helms titles, Most Elite Eights in NCAAT history, among the largest historic brands in CBB history, Top five in Final Four appearances….

I don’t know what makes you say Kentucky is a mid program, but you can take that elsewhere. I absolutely do NOT think you are a Kentucky fan.

Hopefully nobody gets mad at the true statement. Currently we are a mid program. But the tradition isn't mid and things can change at Kentucky in a heartbeat.

If we do what Indiana did in football it won't be a fairytale. It will be pretty on par with what we expect. I think all fans still understand what Kentucky is and what we are capable of. Maybe not the undefeated part but a national championship.

It's been a long time since we've been dominate. I just wish we could have a year where we are the number one seed all season long. Truly dominate. It'll happen with the right coach. As bad as I want Pope to succeed he just doesn't have the personality for the job and that's obvious.

To say we will continue to be mid isn't hate. It's just kind of obvious.

I am a Kentucky fan and I meant the current Kentucky basketball program. Historically Kentucky is the best basketball program in college basketball. I should have been specific, the Kentucky basketball program of the last decade and this generation is mid.

I corrected my post to be specific to the last decade and the current generation. I thought it was obvious that is what I was referring to. No one can argue against Kentucky's greatness historically.

Even in the last ten years, I think you’re going way too far there.

2016 - 4 seed, R32
2017 - 2 seed, E8
2018 - 5 seed, S16
2019 - 2 seed, E8
2020 - 3.5 seed, canceled postseason
2021 - Historically bad year
2022 - 2 seed, R64
2023 - 6 seed, R32
2024 - 3 seed, R64
2025 - 3 seed, S16
2026 - 7 seed, R32

Are those great by Kentucky standards? No. That’s still probably top 15 in CBB in that timeframe. You can say the performance needs to step up without using hyperbole to make easily unraveled caricatures.

Those seem like pretty mid results to me especially for a blue blood. At no point did I say Kentucky was bad. I specifically said they weren't. Over the last ten years they have been disappointing in the tournament. I guess when I say mid I mean solidly tier two and closer to tier three than tier one. That's how I see Kentucky over the last ten years at least in tournament success. Kentucky is not a bad basketball program even now, even in the last ten years they just aren't great. Just like Pope isn't a bad coach he's just not great.

You don't think we've been mid the last two years? He's not a Kentucky fan for saying 9th seeds are mid? Getting blown out in the NCAA tournament games? Once again somebody has to be angry or not a UK fan if they have a different opinion. I agree with him we are the definition of mid. Currently. Not in the past no.

Pope hasn't even beat Georgia man. Like let's be real. He made it to the sweet sixteen year one and got spanked by a team he beat twice in the regular season. It hasn't been fun as a fan. Not for me anyway.

Like I've stated I was pumped before last year and believed we would make some noise. That will not happen again until Pope proves otherwise. It just doesn't seem like we ever stand a chance in big games. That Duke game to begin his career is his best win yet.

Yes I know about Injuries. Does anybody remember last year having injuries actually helped us because Pope had to quit playing 10-11 guys?

This is the bad thing about message boards. Some of you guys can only talk about one topic. Everything comes back to Pope.

Re-read my reply to his post — it had nothing to do with two years, had nothing to do with Pope.

I hate agenda posting and that’s not what I wanna do. There’s some extremely angry pro-Pope people for the extreme angry anti-Pope people to talk to. Y’all can throw haymakers and fight amongst each other about something none of us know for sure yet. Go ahead but I have zero interest in the 8,000,000th Pope sucks or Pope is awesome discussion.

Aw ok I would have to check into that. I'm not saying you're wrong. I was just saying from that one post it didn't seem unreasonable.

I was on the same page as him. I think we have the greatest tradition and of course the best fanbase lol ..but the results lately have been mid. But this isn't a Pope hate or love thing I just don't know how to discuss Kentucky basketball without mentioning Pope.

But wasn't that the whole main point of this thread talking about Pope? I'm pretty certain both of us agree that Pope is neither a great or horrible coach. That's exactly why I liked and agreed with your post. The people that say Pope is amazing and the people saying Pope are awful are probably equally deluded because he's neither. He's exactly what I said he is a mid coach for this generation's mid Kentucky basketball program. If your desires and expectations are to be a favorite going into the season and be a dominant force like Kentucky was in the early Calipari years than he's not good enough and if your expectations are to consistently make it to the NCAA tournament and get past the first round it's hard to argue with his results.

You said mid program. That’s what I replied to.

And I think calling Kentucky a mid program is asinine. We are down a little but just four years ago we were one SEC win away from being a 1 seed. Stuff is overblown

Are you saying calling them historically a mid program is asinine because as I said it's not what I meant? I was specifically referring to this current generation and of the last ten years.

No one in their right mind thinks if you consider Kentucky's entire history that they are a mid program.

Or are you saying almost getting a one seed 4 years ago is enough to say that overall of the last ten years they haven't been a mid program for a blue blood.

Because the head coach has been here for two years. When someone says such and such program is mid/great or anything else, that most certainly goes beyond two years.
How many years does Pope need in your opinion? So Billy G wasn't mid either? Say he wasn't a drunk...you would have defended his results?

All I can say is Pope is the luckiest man in the world. Him winning a championship here set him up for life. I don't think Cal and Pitino were defended during their championship years the way Pope gets defended.

I can't handle two more years of this. If this year is some more of the same stuff how long do you think is fair? The women's coach can have an off season but it's ok because we all see he brings excitement to the program. He's recruiting studs and landing them. He has top recruits interested and has us a cool school even if he hasn't won anything meaningful. It's all about perception to me.

But I don't hate Pope or hope he fails. I just see what I see. He can improve but I don't see it happening. A coach that gets blown out that much with top resources in the country doesn't give me much hope.

When you keep saying ten years, you lose credibility but I know it’s on purpose.

It’s summer , high NIL budget brought in a lot of players again. The current crop of mostly new players has a lot of people hoping for good things. Should work out one of these times. But this seems to be the annual process.

I wouldn’t say we are mid over the last ten years. I’d say we are down but, we’ve had a few national title contenders in that time frame.

2022 was the top 2, was a very possible 1 seed. They just got upset.

2017 was a strong 2 seed, could have ended up a 1 seed. Lost a heartbreaker at the buzzer to the national champions.

2019 was a a very strong 2 seed. Lost in overtime to a team they had beaten multiple times that year in a heartbreaking Elite Eight loss.

2024 and 2025 were both 3 seeded teams. That’s, at minimum, average by all-time UK standards and I’d argue a little better.

2016 was a sleeper but lost to Indiana. 4 seed that was one Skal-not-being-a-bust away from being extremely good.

2020 is a major what-if…somewhere between a 2-4 seed. Probably makes at least a Sweet 16.

2018 was an ok team, a little below Kentucky standards. 5 seed Sweet 16.

Bad teams? There were three: 2021, 2023, 2026. That’s really what this is about. The whole decade of teams gets lumped into mid because of 3 bad teams. I just don’t see it that way.

We are down but not by as much as people want to make it out to be IMO.

I agree entirely. It's all about managing expectations. If you are expecting greatness I feel it's pretty safe to say that's not happening under Pope. It could but it's extremely unlikely. If you are pleased with consistently getting out of the first round of the NCAA tournament and you don't have a really high bar for recruiting than Pope is your man. It just depends on what you hope to see Kentucky be. I'm good with consistent sweet 16's and I believe Pope can get us there. I don't need more championships or to be a top tier program like Duke or UConn but if you do than clearly Pope is unlikely to deliver that.

Hot take, but Skal wasn't a bust at UK. Calipari tried to make him into Shaq. He was a stretch 5. Go watch him against LSU. He was 10 years ahead of his time.

Just more mindless drivel from you. Not even those who dislike me are buying that garbage and you don't believe it either. It is just an attempt to irritate me and suppress the posting of facts that go against your maniacal agenda and it will not work.
We have already established that the facts are on my side. Your argument is rooted in the 1980s basketball and has no relevance to modern times. Rosters are rebuilt in single seasons these days especially with our $. You are being extremely dense or hardheaded to keep with the bad analysis about old coaches. Pope ain't got it.

I don’t fully disagree with your point there. He was misused. But he also did have serious deficiencies. If both say it’s true that he largely was a bust, but he could have been helped by playing into his finesse game more.

If you don't have any interest in discussing it then why don't you just get off the site? I like your takes on Kentucky basketball for the most part. You seem a bit eager to come up with excuses than to look at results but overall i like what you have to say. If you don't want to discuss Kentucky basketball or at least this topic then find another thread, start your own on a topic you do want to discuss or just get off the message board. Coming here just to say you don't want to discuss something and have zero interest in discussing it is what truly comes off as asinine though when you could easily just not be here.

Richie is about 90% negative towards Pope. BeatleBum is about 90% positive towards Pope. Saul is about 75% negative towards Pope.

Then you have people like GoingFor9 who is like 95% negative towards Pope.

There’s nothing to be learned. It’s just boring.

As for me, if there’s a specific topic like strength of schedule importance, how to compare eras, whether the 2020 team is overrated, etc, I’m all over those topics. You can only eat the same food so many times, and I’m overstuffed on “Pope or not?” stuff. It also doesn’t help that I’m really not sure how I even feel about Pope so it’s also kind of awkward for me in the first place.
What am I defending if I don’t have the answers in the first place on that topic?

It wasnt meant to dispel anything. It was meant to bring attention to the fact that Popes “successes” always have to be explained at length. Why? Because it’s really not all that successful. His original point was there should be patience. Pope is getting a third year. Should he have an equivalent third season to his first two, he will be gone and that will be well deserved.

Pope won what? 6 games against T15 teams? And lost 8? Another poster pointed out his win percentage against those teams or T25 teams was far lower than Cals. But he had more wins. Why? More opportunities.

My issue with him has ALWAYS been he’s just mid. Always has been. For every “success” there has to be an explanation. For every good win there’s always some head scratching loss. Here’s another fact. A FACT, as you say. The dude has lost 26 games in two years. You can’t Popesplain that away. Not at UK.
Since the inception of NIL. Kentucky Basketball has regularly lost 10 games a season. They did under Calipari and have under Pope. Since NIL inception our football programs record has declined every year dropping to 5 wins the last 2 years straight.
Barnharts reluctance to accept it dug us a massive hole we haven’t climbed out of. It’s my opinion no coach could have succeeded in either sport.
I do think JMI has made some changes. Barnhart was forced out. Maybe Pope and Stein can succeed under this new AD.
I don’t blame Calipari, Stoops or Pope. Barnhart killed our revenue programs.

Just a warning my friend. You’re about ready to be called a “hate filled fraud” and you are now apparently gay and have boyfriends on here. Not my opinion, just giving you a heads up it’s coming. 😉

They already have. Lol. They offer nothing but opinions though. Nothing. A six years old can google our Football and basketball records since NIL an recognize the straight and steady decline of our revenue sports. Opinions don’t change records.

I don’t disagree with any of that, at least not enough to point out some subtleties. My issue is and has always been with Pope, he’s just meh. He was for 9 yrs prior to UK. He has been for 2 yrs at UK. 11 yrs in, I’m pretty sure that’s who he is. Some are okay with that because he’s allegedly this great dude and former captain of a national championship team (which, btw, he was meh as a player too). I don’t care about any of it. Would just like to not have a goofball that gets meh results.

Oh my joke wasn’t about a group but one single poster that used to go by “Butter’s dad”. Take heed. It’s coming. 🤣

I’d argue he was better than meh for those 9 years prior to Kentucky.

I actually think if you go looking through those 9 years, he showed a lot of promise. He needs to show that promise at Kentucky. And I don’t care about the raw winning percentages — he was doing good stuff before. He’s gotta do it here.

Pope is not a bad coach. But he is not a good coach either. He’s a placeholder.

There is nothing that gives hope he will improve. His teams quit. They are not just out there playing their asses off and just undermanned like the first Pitino team.

His teams quit his first year and his second year.

His players do not improve. He’s Tubbylite as far as results. But Tubby never had teams just quit.

Pope had the opportunity for two different foreign trips this off season. Instead he took the team on vacation.

He had the opportunity to bring in assistants for where he is weak. He chose to not do so.

Pope is a nice guy. He loves UK. We will never have NCAA violations with him here.

If that’s what’s expected from the UK coach then he’s your guy.

He will always lose double digit games. His ceiling is the S16 which is one time in his career.

He’s not too old but he acts too old. Coaches 15-20 years his senior can relate to today’s better than he can.

There are no facts on your side. This is just your opinion that is tailored to reach the conclusion you desire. You are the utter fool who thinks he can see the future and labels any evidence from the past as irrelevant when it does not match your agenda.

I must assume this to be more or less a parody account created by one of the fire Pope crusaders.
