Paywall’d, but given he’s come up a few times in the thread thought it was worth posting for the headline alone
Let’s get him.
Greg couldn’t carry Kelly’s jockstrap.
Winning record everywhere he coached - Grand Valley, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, LSU. Winning conference records at GV, CM, Cincy, and LSU.
At Cincinnati in 2006, crushed the best Rutgers team ever when Rutgers was ranked #7. Brian was 4-0 against Greg's best teams. Objectively, Brian is a superior coach to Greg. Tate and Keli should hire Brian to replace Greg today. Tate hired Brian four years ago, why not hire him at Rutgers.
From article:
For Kelly, this fall will be about watching and listening. Kelly said he wouldn’t rule out being an assistant coach for the first time in 30-plus years. He also said he didn’t need to take a job offer from one of the few programs with a realistic chance of winning a national title.
“I don’t think I’ve closed any doors in my own mind,” Kelly said. “And I think that’s the most important thing. I’m very open-minded about what the opportunities might be for me. I have a lot more to give.”

I remember reading an article about what Kelly said he had to do after taking over from Weis.
totally!
no doubt, it's a lot of things but coaching still matters mostMaybe because winning in football is more than just the coach. Maybe it's a combination of coaching, the AD, the schedule, the strength of the conference at the time and luck. A quick look at Belema's time at Ark. he looks like he has the team on an upswing entering the 2016 season, but then goes 7-6 and 3-5 in the conference but he plays 6 ranked teams. At that point maybe the big donors start to get grumbly. Then looking at his schedules at Illinois they seem much easier and maybe in a game or two he get's lucky and the opposing coach gifts him a win or two. Great coaches can overcome a lot. But maybe some good coaches just get lucky sometimes and sometimes not.
Me toototally!
I'm ready to write a check! lol
I think, whoever it might be, will be a previous HC.I don't know if it's been said but Brian Kelly or Blake Baker are the 2 options that would immediately upgrade this program
Of course it does but Belima didn't somehow forget how to coach when he crossed the Mason Dixon line and remembered when he crossed back. There were factors that his coaching ability wasn't able to overcome. Some places are just to dysfunctional to win or have to big of a hill to climb.no doubt, it's a lot of things but coaching still matters most
no question on Rutgers and we've all debated and discussed it. RU needs a ww2, top to bottom, all in approach to managing sports for it's betterment. zero questionOf course it does but Belima didn't somehow forget how to coach when he crossed the Mason Dixon line and remembered when he crossed back. There were factors that his coaching ability wasn't able to overcome. Some places are just to dysfunctional to win or have to big of a hill to climb.
Now I'm not going to argue with you if Schiano is a good game day coach or a bad game day coach. I've seen to much from him, in the negative, to argue that. But, I think you will agree with me, that Rutgers is one of those dysfunctional schools that almost no coach would be able to overcome and consistently win here. Just look across our athletic department, few of our sports teams win at anything. I think that we've only finished above last once or twice in the director's cup among the BIG teams since we've been in the B1G. That's pretty consistently bad across all teams for a long time and it points to something other than bad coaching which is at play here. And to me, until those things are fixed or at least starting to be addressed, it's futile to eat big contracts and try and bring in other coaches It think mediocre is the ceiling for Rutgers, or at least it was pre-Zinn. If things look cleaned up, and Schiano still flounders, then bring in somebody else. But until then I wouldn't do anything.
This should be the Rutgers coming out song:Of course it does but Belima didn't somehow forget how to coach when he crossed the Mason Dixon line and remembered when he crossed back. The reason we always finish in the bottom of the directors cup and we are so dysfunctional is we do ex’s fly what you suggest NOTHING!Of course it does but Belima didn't somehow forget how to coach when he crossed the Mason Dixon line and remembered when he crossed back. Read through my post and find the word "until" and then read that sentence. The reason we always finish in the bottom of the directors cup and we are so dysfunctional is we do ex’s fly what you suggest NOTHING!
Successful programs understand how to win and do not sit on dead weight coaches allows all the fruit to die on the vine before they move on. You never can get off the mat just doing nothing.
"Maybe in a game or two he gets lucky and the opposing coach gifts him a win or two.". Truer words have never been spoken. Greg handed Bielema one of his 10 wins that season on a silver platter.Maybe because winning in football is more than just the coach. Maybe it's a combination of coaching, the AD, the schedule, the strength of the conference at the time and luck. Almost funny to think that how going to one concert is a defining moment- meanwhile- at other winning schools such as Michigan- the HC has plenty of time to well, you know...All of his (counting) Crows would have eventually come home to roost.![]()
Here is something often missed. Flood actually started out very strong in recruiting and not only some great commits but also getting visits from huge national recruits on top of that.He wasn’t as bad as some people make it out to be, but it’s hard to imagine his recruiting classes wouldn’t have caught up with him.
Last paragraph is what did him in more than anything else. You don’t come from Floods background and forget about discipline and hard work. Here is something often missed. Flood actually started out very strong in recruiting and not only some great commits but also getting visits from huge national recruits on top of that.
But- he started to have a bad year and then JH started her crap- the recruits started to listen and started to leave. And the first time that we had a recruit that committed, go on a OV to another school- everyone applauded Flood for acting like a big boy school and telling the kid that is not acceptable and that he no longer considered him as committed.
If he had an AD that had his back and supported him- those recruiting classes would have been much better.
After the disaster that followed that year- he had no choice but to go against his normal tendencies and follow a much more Louisville type of approach where you would have to remind kids to keep their guns and drugs at home and not to abuse women.
The guy just gave up at that point. He actually did keep his head in the game during practice and gameday though. But just no longer cared, why would he?
What upset me most about Flood- is that he did not stand up for himself and his beliefs and allowed himself to be a puppet just to get his paycheck
As for the BucsGreg would best served giving the headsets to someone else on gameday. A hallmark of his career is routinely getting outcoached on game day. The NFL really showed how pedestrian he is when the lights come on.
What upset me most about Flood- is that he did not stand up for himself and his beliefs and allowed himself to be a puppet just to get his paycheck
I’m not going to make excuses for anyone…but when you’re going through all the stress from work and a family member is dying, in this case his mom, it does stuff do you.Last paragraph is what did him in more than anything else. You don’t come from Floods background and forget about discipline and hard work.
Wrong again. You hear from the few while the many are silenced! There has to be a ex player or parent on the board who know.Wow, now he’s a bad guy. The guys who have played for him don’t think so.
Negatoids are the bad guys!
Go Coach Schiano and Go RU!!
Those guys suck as coaches too.As for the Bucs
Raheem Morris was 17-31 the 3 years before , Doing 3-13 ,10-6 & 4-12
Greg tried and failed (11-21) in 2
Lovie Smith took over and did worse (8-24,) in 2 .
Greg might not be prime rib as a HC ,but Tampa wasn’t a beef tenderloin organization right before and for a little while after he was there.
Not defending Schiano as a HC , but Vince Lombardi would have had problems winning there at the time.
The Bucs basically sucked from when they got rid of Jon Guden at the end of the 2008 season to 2020 when they reached the playoffs again ,winning the Super Bowl under Bruce Arians with Rom Brady at QB
But you’re spot on about his lack of gameday coaching chops, I would say Schiano’s gameday coaching would have Lombardi’s Packers looking more like Rich Kotite's Jets
As it stands, unless Schiano has a winning season this year, he needs to be replaced ASAP.
If he wins in 2026 but the program doesn't look like it's headed towards being among the "upper echelon" in the BIG , then Zinn needs look for someone that she feels will be able to and replace Greg .
adding a reply to what yesrutgers posted about Food and his lack of support from JH
From the beginning Kyle didn't have the support of the fanbase and his first year record was put down by his detractors saying it was Schiano's recruits that made him look good .
So besides the AD , Flood didn't have the type of fan support that recruits might look at as when they choose schools .
I supported Kyle at first, but by the time he was forced out, I wanted him gone..
2026 Rutgers Football5+ wins with this schedule will require that Schiano is a genius. We are building a program. Maybe we finally have two nickles to begin to start to compete!

And 3 of those coaches are on our schedule. Let’s see how they do head to head. Greg should be able to take 2 of 3 minimum.#8 here

Glad to see the once vaunted Lance Leipold on the list. Coaching in a P4 league is not like coaching at Wisconsin Whitewater. He has a 9 win season to his credit though, and a winning conference record. And 3 of those coaches are on our schedule. Let’s see how they do head to head. Greg should be able to take 2 of 3 minimum.

One of the easier schedules of Greg 2.0. 3 gimmes. 3 coaches on the hot seat 3 brand new coaching staffs.5 wins with this schedule is not an indication of coaching genius. 9 or 10 wins would be.

Imagine the idiocy of thinking 2 wins after playing 3 cupcakes is a major accomplishment.5 wins with this schedule is not an indication of coaching genius. 9 or 10 wins would be.
yeah I don't buy that one at all. considering 54 new players last year, they actually faired well in a lot of games but still lost. Purdue was way too inconsistent so we'll see how they play this year.Odom's seat is hot already? It's his second year.
well Joe is trying, can't fault him for supporting his dad but we can fault him for continuing the grift lolIf Rutgers does not win this game, fans may be in for a long season.

I don't think these people (or the AI they're probably using) actually watched any games these teams played or had any awareness of these situations.yeah I don't buy that one at all. considering 54 new players last year, they actually faired well in a lot of games but still lost. I honestly don't put much credence in these lists as there is a lot that goes into the decision to can someone.
Hopefully you are joking. LMAO5+ wins with this schedule will require that Schiano is a genius. We are building a program. Maybe we finally have two nickles to begin to start to compete!
