Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican who served in the State Legislature and the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate four times, has died, his office announced early Sunday. He was 71.

He died of a “brief and sudden” illness on Saturday evening, his office said in a statement, without providing details.

Mr. Graham was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994, before being elected to the Senate in 2002. He was re-elected to the Senate in 2008, 2014 and 2020. He was serving as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.

I'm extremely surprised by this news. Lindsey Graham did not look like someone who was suffering from any health issues. But you never know.

The news is so fresh and so unexpected that I don't even know what to make of it. I would imagine that, from a political standpoint, it favors the Democratic senatorial candidate from South Carolina, and I can't even recall her name. The Republicans need to identify and put up a new Republican senatorial candidate virtually overnight, pretty much like the Maine Democratic Party has to do.

Well, in fairness, plenty of liberals did in fact celebrate Kirk’s death. Plenty. And that is indeed disgusting. The same as a lot of the comments about the late senator from South Carolina in this thread are disgusting.

The difference is none of them are the g0dd@mn POTUS—who should feel some sort of obligation to uphold the dignity of the office of president by refraining from reprehensible comments about being glad an American citizen is dead.
