There’s a rumor that private equity is about to get involved with LSU

What about the current structure of college athletics screams quality to you other than perhaps the TV deals?
I would argue the quality that non-revenue sport athletes and fans receive at SEC and other p4 schools is very, very high

So far the only mention I’ve heard of the elimination of Olympic sports is from some of the “experts” here. As someone pointed out earlier, there are boundaries around that.

My point is that programs that don’t necessarily make the bottom line have high standards from facilities to travel to benefit for students (healthcare, scholarships, pay, etc)

Compare that to how athletes in real businesses are treated (minor league baseball, WNBA, and so on), and I think we could all agree the quality in college athletics is very high. But as I said earlier, college athletics isn’t a real business, and as many others have said in the thread, that alone makes PE an odd fit for this model unless you are willing to sacrifice something. Up to this point nobody has been willing and/or able to make that sacrifice

What happened with employee stock when they sold after 6 months?
Oversimplified explanation is they kept some subsidiaries of the company, so they had to come up with an allocated value for the subsidiary they were selling off. Nobody could really follow the math but at the end of the day they basically gave us about 80% of what the original award was supposed to be. Supposedly this represented some growth over what the allocation was 6 months prior but who knows because that was never shared.

I can't imagine the SEC would allow LSU to do this without the league voting on it
I don't think the SEC gets a say in how LSU is run.

Florida's athletic department is a separate entity from the university.
Vanderbilt's athletic department is in their Student Life Office.

If the state of Louisiana and LSU want to do this, the SEC will not have a say.

LSU will be an interesting case study for PE in college sports. They don’t have an endless supply of money like Texas, A&M, Michigan, Ohio State, etc, but they do have expectations to compete in many non-revenue sports, such as WBB, gymnastics, baseball, softball etc and have spent big on those sports even when they don’t return the value on the accounting sheet.

PE has long been come in and cut the fat, which is essentially non-revenue components of the business they acquire,in college athletics case it’s the Olympic/non-revenue sports. A reminder, college athletics isn’t a business, and certainly not an ideal model.

Remember when the B1G was about to cut a PE deal with the California State Pension System, the big schools (Michigan being the driver) were the ones that stopped it because they knew they couldn’t have their cake and eat it too, while the smaller schools (Maryland, Purdue, Minnesota) were clamoring for it
Wonder if PE will cut LSU's baseball program? Does LSU make money from baseball?

There are all kinds of deals being done outside of the purview of a conference office to enhance revenue. The talented college administrators (unicorns) will lead. The others will either follow or get out of the way.

It’s gonna be harder to cut sports than people think. Arkansas tried to cut men’s & women’s tennis. That didn’t even last a week. You try to do much cutting & Congress and/or the courts are gonna put an end to that real quick.
well they didnt reinstate the tennis bc of courts....former players and alumni rallied to raise enough money to temporarily reinstate the tennis programs.....the AD said they still dont have a long term solution to keep those programs going. But i agree with your overall point....once they start cutting a lot of women's sports, congress will be forced to intervene

By quality I mean having a good team and program that wins. Boosters "invest" to win games at the school they have pride in. They want everything to be top notch. The PE firms invest to generate revenue.

Yeah, I was curious if the original board just blatantly ignored their fiduciary duty and took a deal that screwed employees vs something more complex that happened later. Not surprised that it was something nebulous that hurt employees while still giving some payment and being likely to hold up in court

$100 million plus per season being rumored. Private equity would get a share of the profits.

The top 40 donors at LSU have been summoned to the governors mansion for a presentation on “the future of LSU football”

can’t wait to trade LSU football in the stock market!
College athletics is as stupid as I think it is. Trying to accelerate the end

Another nail in the coffin as far as I am concerned. It’s not college sports anymore.
Yeah, need to go ahead and make it official that college sports will fall into a farm system for the NFL. Much like AAA, AA, & A football. MSU would likely end up with a AA franchise. Teams like Ohio St., BAMA, TX, TAMU, UF, UTK, Penn. St., etc would get the AAA franchises.

Is that a bad thing?
I think it is. College in general is about investment in people. Not making as much money as possible. There’s plenty of money available, PE isn’t needed.

And it won’t last anyway. For reasons that have been discussed as nauseum.

It's just a matter of time before olemiss figures out they want to do it and calls their cigar boys in. They don't give a **** about the long term effects either. They just want to win now. And they won't be able to stand it if the real bluebloods like LSU, UF, or UT are doing it.

No you haven’t. You just insulted folks. Be an adult and lay it out.
You start this thread by asking to explain it to you like a 9th grader. Then a few minutes later it’s “I’ve heard enough, it isn’t going to work”. You either had already formed your opinion before you ever started or you formed your opinion from a few posts on the ******* sixpack. One makes you a liar/troll, the other makes you look foolish. But we’ve all learned over the years that both can be true with you. In other words, and both.

If you really don’t think it will work, I really like its chances along with reasons that I have given here for sometime (I’ve seen it work in both short-term and long-term deals and we’ve all seen the incompetence of athletic administrators).

You are pro private equity in college sports yet complain about how much the sport has changed? Maybe the most dumbass stance I've ever heard. You cannot be serious.
WTF are you talking about. I think paying players was long overdue and it has made play on the fields and courts much better (and the TV ratings support that). I just think the lack of business acumen at the college admin levels warrants outside intervention. And given how none of them seemed to see this coming, I don’t know how anybody could argue against that.

Have you seen it not work in college sports? That’s what I thought. There will be plenty of opportunity to see it work in college sports as they enter the space. I’ll bet on smart business people over a bunch of athletic administrators every ******* time.

Paying players is fine no one is against that. You seem to be in the minority that believes that PE firms will improve the situation. I hope your are right. From what I've seen the usually milk established brands dry and then hack up the remains and sell them before moving to their next venture. If you like these firms business models and think they are good for the long term health for college athletics then we are just going to have to agree to disagree

YOU brought up that I was complaining about how college sports have changed. I just assumed you were referring to pay-for-play because THAT is the biggest change the space has seen since integration. So in other words, YOU moved the goal posts.

What goalposts? I said I dont like private equity which is true. I said that you don't like the current state of college sports which you said. I haven't change my point at all. You made an incorrect assumption and argued against a point I didn't make.

Let’s recap with facts. L4 said PE would likely to be the final nail in the coffin and that it’s not college sports anymore. I think college sports are trending from opposite of nail in the coffin. Seems to me, you have your posters mixed up.

Another fact: you didn’t just say you didn’t like PE, you said “PE makes everything they touch worse”. That’s a big ******* difference. And it simply isn’t true. I’ve seen PE work first hand.

You’re not being honest.
