Does anyone give a hoot about the World Cup? I won't give a nickle to see any of those games. I know a man in Pa that paid

I never had any interest in soccer until I found myself coaching youth soccer because Parks and rec couldn’t find a coach. We ended up winning the league and I was All Star coach.I knew I was in over my head so I asked a friend who played college soccer to help. That was my first introduction to real soccer.
we ended up moving the whole all star team to club soccer.Fortunately in Sumter our club had incredible coaches I got to see what soccer played at a high level looked like.Ever since my whole family loves soccer.
I suspect a lot of good ole country boy soccer fans have a similar experience.

$1100 apiece for cheap seats for him and his son.
I sure hope if he paid $1100 for a ticket, it was at least for a game featuring the US team. I wouldn't pay much, but I can at least appreciate why somebody would pay a lot to see Team USA play in the World Cup. What truly baffles me are the Americans who are paying significant money to attend games like Ecuador vs. Curaçao.

I don't know what teams they watched.

People are coming from all over the world to see these games - and paying well above book value to see them also.

I am surprised at the turnout for the games in the United States. These stadiums are packed and I was not expecting that. Great support.

Getting off subject here but this guy did not move the whole game.

Don’t follow soccer except for World Cup. It’s awesome to see team USA play in the biggest tournament of the sport. And it only happens once every 4 years. And to top it off it’s being played at home! Games are exciting. Go to a bar, grab a beer and watch team USA. Def can get sucked in to the excitement. We are always an underdog with little hope but we started off the tournament with a big statement. Excited for Friday.

Like I've said in many other posts in the last week, I'd much rather watch the world cup than the NBA or most MLB games. I did play soccer before it was popular in the US so I understand it.
I've really enjoyed watching it the last week.

I haven't watched any of it. I just never cared for the sport.

The fans coming in from other countries have been entertaining though. Their videos on X have been pretty good. They love America.

The guys i know had to buy tickets before the matchups were announced. You could buy tickets to say, the Atlanta game on such and such date. Then you found out later who was placed where.

Hated that idea. Bet there was a LOT of ticket swapping after the matchups were announced.

I know one guy who bought tickets for him and his son to a relatively close game. Then found out who was playing and was thinking of selling the tickets because he could make 4x his money back.

I played for a while as a youth, but never really liked it as a spectator until my children started getting into it. As you said, there are levels of soccer and the higher levels can be very entertaining. Well, to some.

(Apologies to those who enjoy soccer)

My interest in soccer is only fueled by our grandchildren playing it. As to watching the game itself . . . boring. Extremely boring. My son turned on the World Cup, and I watched 2 minutes of it until I had to turn away. As @Bubba Fett says, it’s like watching grass grow.

I will watch more World Cup than I did NBA finals, which was none. No MLB anymore either - they want to rub “Pride” events in everyone’s face. And the relationship to that & baseball is ???

Just say no to Commie kickball.

I went to a premier league game in England once. It was equivalent to watching grass grow. Slightly less entertaining than painting a fence.
What's happening on the field must not be very enthralling if half the people in the stands are singing together at the top of their lungs.

I have actually grown to appreciate the chanting. There are some really funny ones. But, i understand its a matter of taste.

I have to have a rooting interest in the game. Then I can get into it. The Spain v Cape Verde game was really fun despite the 0-0 draw. The ball was on Cape Verde's side of the field for probably 85% of the game. Those guys were so scrappy and it felt like at any moment Spain was going to shoot one into the net. I would liken it to being backed up inside your own 30 yard line for most of the game and managing to keep the other team from scoring.
It is also much better in person if you have decent seats, imo. That also rings true for NBA games. Most people who say they don't like the NBA have never had lower bowl, sideline seats. I always recommend finding a way to get good seats and get there early to see warm-ups at NBA games. You get to see how big and fast those guys really are and how they drain jumper after jumper in warm-ups. It's really impressive.

The World Cup is an incredible event. The USMNT last Friday probably played their best half of soccer in a World Cup ever. In the stands, it's a couple hours of everyone coming together to be part of something bigger than themselves, setting aside the political divisions to be one nation again.

I like it, but everyone has different interests, I got made fun of on here, because i dont like watching regular season Braves games on TV, LOL. I think watching one of 162 games is kind of meaningless and I have better things to do but that is my opinion and expressed it after being asked by a OP in a thread. I like that this World Cup event, and like that it is every 4 years and the games matter so much to so many globally, I watched the USA game against Paraguay and had a good time watching and rooting the team on and will watch the next game Friday night. All my kids played soccer at various levels through school and travel ball and I gained a greater appreciation for the sport.

I just can't get behind any sport where the scoring or action is limited. So, soccer and baseball, for the most part, are out for me. Scoring can be limited in football too, but at least there will be several instances where players are getting their blocks knocked off. I am an action guy. Like movies where things get blown up and constant action in my sports. I have tried soccer several times, but I just can't with that sport. I am just a Football, Basketball, and sometimes Tennis guy.

You still have to like the sport though. I had someone drag me to a Hurricanes game one time. I just can't do it with Hockey either. Appreciate their ability to play a sport in skates at the speed they do, but, nope, still not for me. I have tried racing too. Exciting about the first 3 or 4 laps around the track. After that, I was looking at my watch.

Good point on liking the sport. Everyone has different interests, which means what one person finds entertaining the next person doesn't.

The foreign visitors are sure enjoying visiting and seeing the US. It's a lot different in real life than what's being portrayed in the media.

There's a lot about the good-ole-USA that we easily forget about.

I have seen the quote several times. "If you want to hate america, watch the news. If you want to love america, drive across it."

Seems like we're seeing that play out in real life.

This is true. In the moments I have just turned by a World Cup match or any other soccer match, I found the crowd more entertaining than the actual game.

I agree. I can relax and watch baseball and be fine, but I don't have to see any game. Playoff baseball is another animal, especially in the LCS and WS games.

I can't watch much hockey on TV unless it's a game 7 or Gold Medal game. It's much better in person, but I haven't been to a hockey game since the Thrashers left Atlanta.
I grew up going to Greenville-Pickens on Saturday nights with some Anderson Friday nights peppered in. I just love racing. I watch NASCAR, Indy, F1 all the time. I've been to three Cup races and it's great to experience the power and speed, but I've gotten to the point where I can't stand sitting in the car afterwards waiting to get back on the road for a long drive home.
Honestly same thing goes for college football. I like going to Carolina games every couple of years, but I'm fine watching at home. I can pee whenever I want, bee and food are 1/5 the price and I don't have to drive anywhere.

You bring up a good point about seeing it in person.

I've even sat through a baseball game in person, where I couldn't be paid to tune in on TV.
