Nick "Happy" Smith

UK statement on Nic Smith

Our community has suffered a tragic loss with the death of one of our students, Nic Smith. Nic was a sophomore in the Community Leadership and Development program in the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, and one of our student athletes on the UK Football team.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and teammates. We ask that you respect their privacy during this difficult time.

We want to remind members of our community that you do not have to navigate this loss alone, and that support resources are available through the Office for Student Success.

“Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him.

This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory,” said UK Football Head Coach Will Stein.

Awful news.

Not saying this is what happened, but sadly most that I know that come across so unusually happy that they could be given that nickname, there is usually something dark underneath.

Hope im wrong, but I've lost several close to me that fit this description.

I saw in the other thread that he had just lost his sister recently and made comments questioning whether he should keep going.

I pray that is not what happened. I know the feeling the last 8 months though sadly. Its hard to keep going at times when u lose someone u love so much.

Prayers to his family and friends and the UK football family.

I hate hearing this. Does anyone know what happened to his sister that just passed? I feel so bad for the parents 💔
I had no idea he had recently lost a sister. That makes this even WORSE, and I couldn't have imagined it being worse than what was originally reported.

God bless his parents. A parent should NEVER have to bury a child. So dang sad.

Let alone two in a short span. I can’t imagine what they are feeling RN. They will never get over this as long as they live.
