This seems odd ... two (2) good programs that should keep playing each other and the players make MILLIONS to play in the BIG games !!
Surely, KY signing two (2) players from Gonzaga's backyard are not an issue in the decision ... ????

Pope knows he can’t afford a loss to them and will probably schedule morehead state to replace them. I expect to pull out of the champions classic next.

Once again those paying a kings ransom fot Rupp tickets and donations are the ones who suffer the most.
One thing Pope has not done, is loaded up a schedule full of cupcakes. So try something else.
Good. We need to schedule more teams that we can be competitive with while Pope is here. 30 point beatdowns by quality teams is not something fans want.
Might not be so bad if you can add a Houston or an Arizona in their place. How about a rematch with Iowa State, Or possibly games against a team like Texas Tech, Cincinnati, BYU, Michigan, Illinois, or Purdue. Just not some bull **** like Jackson State.
I posted in the 3rd post of the thread the lowest ranked school in division 1 last year... That ought to be a great tune up and 1 less loss for UK next year!
If we are nixing Zaga, really have a hard time seeing that game being replaced by the likes of a Houston or Zona.

Also smart move on Pope's part -- schedule Jackson State instead and get that loss total down from 18 to 17.

13 out of conference games, almost half against premier teams. i know fans love to "man up", "iron sharpens iron", "play everyone" mentality....but really no one plays this kind of schedule year in and year out. plus play in a league that is going to be top 2 every year.

At least I got to see the game in Seattle, and the Cats coming back from being down 18 to win in OT. Probably the best game I've seen in-person.
We had been trending downward or at best stagnated as a non title threat for years leading up to when the series was announced. It wasn’t hard to see coming if you take off the blue tinted glasses.
Our record versus ranked opponents in Cal’s last 4 or 5 seasons was abysmal compared to Gonzaga’s during that time frame. They had been a better program for nearly a decade. 2 final fours and like 5 1 seeds to our 0 and 0.

Wasn’t really a matchup I cared much about. Hope they do right by the fans with the home game this year or a tournament like event that we haven’t done in ages.

I mean it's better than Cal's 0-2 verses the Zags, but Pope's loss was way uglier despite the 1 last second win.
Interesting note, Cal never lost to Gonzaga prior to coaching KY. He was 4-0 against them while at UMASS and Memphis. But those weren't your current iterations of Gonzaga either.

Makes 20 losses next season one game less likely.
Pope beat 8 top 15 teams his first year here with 4 significant injuries. That is an NCAA record. He can obviously coach. I don't think he will last here because of his recruiting ability. But he is not afraid to play Gonzaga, a team he has split games with at UK.
