What you’re missing is that the coaching got the most out of the talent onhand. Cignetti would never even consider the Rutgers job because there isn’t enough support for success. Indiana spent big money to get to where they’re at:

- $86M in new facilities
- $30M - $40M in players salaries

No other team had the #1 pick in the draft, who was also the Heisman winner, so he was arguably the best college football player. Mendoza helped Indiana transcend its mediocre past, and was a difference maker. Mendoza didn’t come cheap. Indiana spent $2.6M on him.

Indiana doesn’t win a National Championship without Mendoza. They spent a ton of money on players, mostly experienced transfers, ready to play their best football, who could outperform the 4 and 5 star players from other teams. They did an exceptional job of talent identification. Rutgers can’t replicate Indianas strategy because we don’t have the NIL funds.

We raise $100M for a Fieldhouse, Rutgers bonds an additional $200M, and receives at least $20M/year in additional NIL support, and we will blow Ohio State, Michigan, and USC into the god-damn weeds. We have by far the best location, but can’t leverage it due to the holes in our value proposition. This is why the best recruits especially from Jersey don’t take us seriously.
We're not ever blowing OSU, Mich or USC into the ******** weeds
That's your problem Al - you come on here raising a good point and negate it with dumb *** statements like that

You start off by saying we need to donate more
And we do

But here's the facts:
1. GS will never, and I mean ever, get us over the hump. He could have a 100 dollar payroll and it's still not happening. Guy is not a good coach
2. Attacking posters - never smart, especially when you're trying to get them to give money
3. You make good points about donating, them dumb things down with saying we're going to lap historical programs - truly stupid stuff

The ceiling for this program is 6-7 wins consistently w/Greg. You fire him, have Zinn raise money, replace him with a component coach, have a little luck, and, at best, the ceiling is a consistent 8-9 wins, and that's stretching it

The goal should be a 70k stadium, with upper decks on both endzones, and a program similar to Iowa / Michigan State
Absent of Phil Knight coming in and writing blank checks, that's the reality of the situation

Al, I donated to the Athletics Dept & Scholarship Funds for over 40 years. During most of that time I had Football & Basketball season tickets. I stopped everything this year because I refuse to donate money to athletes that are paid more than I ever did and are now able to pay to attend college using the money they get from NIL.

Indiana spent less money on players than all the teams they beat in the CFP. And Cignetti won championships in places with less resources than he had at Indiana. Google him. Schiano hasn't maximized RU's talent. At all.

Support through adverse circumstances is admirable, but it doesn’t bring Championships. Significant financial support is what brings Championships.

That’s why Indiana spent $86 M dollars to improve their infrastructure, and millions more on great players and coaches. The #1 pick in the draft cost them $2.6 M.

Success starts with recruiting. We are not recruiting at a level which will bring success. Miami is recruiting at a level which will bring success because they have the financial support to be successful.

If we want better results, we have to talk about what’s needed for better results. If people don’t want better results, then that’s their decision. But they can’t complain afterwards that we didn’t do better.
indiana caught lightening in a bottle with a once in a generation coach the likes of which we may not see again in our lifetimes. Indiana also spends significantly less on their staff because they emphasize efficiency in all they do; another characteristic trademark of their coach.

when is the last time Rutgers beat a team it was a double digit underdog to? Is that because of NIL? When was the last time Rutgers football overachieved? Is your argument: we don’t have the NIL horses to overachieve.

Before NIL, this program’s leader wasn’t able to accomplish what even UConn, a fledgling program at the time, was able to: go to a BCS game. No, it’s not NIL. But it sure is a convenient excuse.

I hope Greg and this years staff are able to get it together. But if they do, it won’t be because of NIL; it will be because they brought in a solid bunch of defensive coaches that connected with these players in a way that made a meaningful impact on the field.

Al, it’s not about being admirable. If not for those fans back in the early 2000s, Rutgers could very well have gone the way of Temple. Don’t ridicule the hand that feeds. It’s what breeds animosity.

You’re a waste of oxygen on this messageboard.
Don’t think I’ve forgotten about your. “Mario Cristobal is going to be Fired” Prediction. Instead, he’s close to the top of the world.

Infrastructure is the needed football fieldhouse, like what Schiano had written into his contract, which Rutgers still hadn’t delivered on. It was the first thing Schiano said he needed.

This is why our recruiting stinks and Rutgers situation looks like amateur hour to the best recruits, especially compared to a place like Michigan.

Thus, We have a massive staff because more effort is required to recruit the 2 and 3 stars from FL, NC, and GA. The best Jersey kids just don’t want to come here anymore. Kids don’t just fall out of a tree. Lots of time and effort went into identifying Antwan Raymond, from Canada, for instance.
Actually I said Man Boobs Cristofail will never win anything. And yea, he’ll be fired too.

4 of their 8 guys drafted came with him from JMU. I'm sure he spent millions getting them to JMU. Guy just knows talent and how to coach it.

In ways he is a good coach but as HC he is fatally flawed with his horrible offensive philosophy with anemic red zones every year. Now with AK getting drafted in 7th (after 2 years with some of best WRs Rutgers even had) I'll bet Kirk will get another half mil from GS (he thinks Kirk is a genius on offense)

Why don't I donate enough? Let me count the ways.............

1. I'm nearing retirement and want to save my money to enjoy myself in my golden years. I've got money put aside but there is nothing in this world that's getting cheaper, so I'm going to want every $ I can keep for myself.
2. I'm paying for Football and Basketball season tickets, plus seat fees, plus parking fees, plus minimum donations to park and they still lose. (it's also why I'm not renewing my MBB tickets)
3. I'm donating to the R Fund already
4. I'm parking next to MBB players in the APC lot who are driving $100k+ cars and we can't make it to the NIT
5. I've been a RN for 44.5 years. I've never made close to $1m, $500k or even $250k in a year. Am I really supposed to donate money so some 18y/o whose name I won't have remembered by the time he leaves the school in 9 months, can get paid a half million dollars?
6. NIL was supposed to be NIL, Name, Image & Likeness. However, It's turned into pay to play (although at the end of the season when they are saving themselves for the next highest bidder they aren't playing but are still getting paid) and it's turned into a free agency every year. At least in the pros there's a contract & you have to work for a couple of years before you become a free agent.
7. If they are getting paid $500k/year then let them pay for school & give those scholarships to people who actually need them.
8. I bought a brick this year......earmarked the money for the Marching Band because they have kicked *** the past few years and deserve some money and recognition. I donated on Giving Day...money went to the Marching Band as well.

The repeated "I'm not paying players to make $500k and spend it on beer money! They have $100k cars. I'm not funding that!" will never not be funny.

But you'll pay the Athletic Department so Schiano can get $5k for underwear because he needs a clothing stipend above the $6m salary?
Or so he can play golf with his free country club membership?
Or drive his free car?

1. Is the fact that the HC of almost every D1 football team in the country the highest paid state employee ridiculous? yep
2. Schiano does not get a clothing stipend. He gets to fly commercial first class and has use of a helicopter a finite number of times a year for recruiting.
3. Do I think Schiano deserves a car with a driver? Yep. He made great & wonderful use of that after Eric got hurt and he was being driving from RU to home to the hospital & he got a lot done in the back of that car.
4. If we are speaking specifically about Schiano I doubt the man has time for a round of golf outside of his yearly charitable event, so yea, if he has a free country club membership that's probably wasted money, especially since RU has a golf course right there.
5. Do I know the name of Greg, his wife, his kids? yep Because they have all stayed for more than 9 months and aren't looking for the next paycheck.
6. do I think coach's should have to give back money every year they don't have a winning season.....that's something to ponder.
7. Am I entitled to my opinion on NIL & all that comes with it? yeppers. Are you allowed to disagree? yep.

you are correct. I was donating to NIL after Schiano came back and said forget about the Bubble Replacement, donate to NIL. So I moved my donations from the R Fund to the NIL collective. Then Rutgers decided to up the donation amounts for parking, and I was short, because I was donating to the non-priority point eligible NIL collective.
So I switched back to the RFund where my $$ counts towards priority points.
I have also purchased 6 bricks over the years.
I am not renewing my MBB tix and this upcoming season will be my last for football season tix because we are retiring to NC. All donations to RU will stop by the end of the year, if not sooner. I'll be able to purchase MBB & Football tickets to games I want to attend with little to no effort and, even at SeatGeek prices, way less than season tickets will cost me.

Ha. Not SDS at all.
I couldn't care less about his $5k underwear stipend (;)), free country club membership or free car.
If he gets fired, I'm sure the next HC would get the same.

But I'm not complaining about fans funding college atheltics.

Pretty sure season tickets and parking includes a "mandatory" donation to the Athletic Department.
So you are paying extra money to the AD to cover their expenses. Like the aforementioned underwear fund, free car and athelete beers.

It would be a funny audit of Atheltic Department employee spending.
If people are outraged over athletes spending money on beers - does that apply to everyone getting money?

Maybe KJ Duff is using his $100k to drive his family to church?
What about Atheltic Department staff using the money they got from the AD on beer?
There sure are alot of those guys on staff that you don't know their familes names.

As I said, the seemingly hypocritical nature of "give money to AD - good, give money directly to atheltes - bad" is comical to me.

At least with athletes they luckily only get paid for 9 month's at a time.
Not like Robb Smith and Sparber who had multi-year contracts and got paid millions.

Also.....from Schiano's original $4m/year contract:

Schiano will earn an annual auto stipend of $15,000 and have an annual $5,000 apparel allocation. Rutgers will pay initiation fees and monthly dues for a country club membership.

He will also receive up to $25,000 in relocation expenses.

What's the over under on how much #MiamiAl donated to RU athletics in FY25? I'd say $3K.

Maybe I'm alone on this, but I couldn't care less who makes what
If Greg makes 5 mil / year, good on him for signing that deal
Same w/the players - if you have a skill set and someone is willing to pay you for that, do it all day and twice on Sunday's

Re. donations, I'll give to programs I believe in:

Football - bare minimums to keep seats. GS isn't the answer and I'm not throwing money out the window to window to win 6/7 games per year
BBall - same as FB. Pike blew the chance of a lifetime w/Ace and Dylan. He's been successful before, but he's shot
Lax - Running out of patience w/Brian. FF in 22 is in the rearview. I know we lack in NIL and injuries have taken a toll, but it's time to produce

Again, couldn't care less if I'm driving a used Hyundai and park 3 miles away and a guy on the team drives a 100k car and has 8 girls with him exiting the car. Just win

There’s a huge reason why we don’t have more wins against Illinois, UCLA, etc. infrastructure. That’s why Illinois poached the best linemen out of Nj last year, Kai Pritchard, while we had to settle for a 3 star from down south. It’s also why Rutgers is unable to recruit our share of Jerseys best. The best Jersey kids think they will get better experiences elsewhere. So no more Anthony Davis, Savon Huggins, and Darius Hamilton caliber recruits for Rutgers. They’re going to the Ohio States, Michigans, Georgias, Texas, Texas A&M etc. in other words, programs with money.
None of those players were around when NIL became a thing. Who's to say RU could afford players like them today?

You mentioned Illini whose athletics received a $100 MILLION donation from Larry Gies this past September.

John Ruiz put up millions in support and NIL to your love, Miami.

Instead of these posts every week, why not make it your quest to find a whale for Rutgers because I seriously doubt you'll find one berating board members here.

We're relocating to Leland. There's a place called Pizzettas, which actually has pizza that doesn't suck. we are there Thursday & I was pleasantly surprised
On Saturday we got to have dinner with 2 sets of Rutgers friends who live in the area. We're starting the Wilmington Area Rutgers Club. 😁

Just win
Agreed! If Rutgers is winning I don’t care how much the coaches and players are making. I’m just tired of seeing Rutgers on the losing end. Also with you on the coaching changes, don’t think Schiano or Pike can take their programs to the next level. Nor can Goodale with wrestling.

Putting my hopes with WBB and Redus to bring Rutgers some wins.

If I read it correctly she pays for tickets plus the add ons (parking) required to go to the game. No donations related to NIL.

Don't look now but your SDS (that's Schiano Derangement Syndrome, not Students for a Democratric Society) is showing.
No..reality is showing.

7. Am I entitled to my opinion on NIL & all that comes with it? yeppers. Are you allowed to disagree? yep.
What makes NIL even more comical is you can’t even get a tax write-off which likely explains the lack of corporate engagement/support.

Also, forget about education = not a single notable D1 football player was academically ineligible…few people I know with kids at big football schools say the tutors are doing all the classwork and it’s known the athletes all cheat on exams. They are given tests in private classrooms that are proctored by members of the athletic department that stare down at their phones the entire time under the see no evil, hear no evil principle. So the kids just take out their phones and use ChatGPT. Some schools let athletes take exams on their laptops in their dorm rooms with no oversight - the athletes just look up all the answers.

Incorrect because collectives no longer exist and NIL is only business related. Donations to the Athletic Excellence Fund (aka revenue sharing) are tax deductible because the money is going directly to the school.
