That podcast is well worth the listen. Really wish Tucker would drop a big behind-the-scenes type article detailing what in the world is or isn’t going on. I truly think we’d hear some recruiting pitches and NIL strategies that would make us seriously question if they were meant as jokes or reality.
I get why he's not hiring a GM, I agree with his philosophy. He'll have to decide whether standing up for academics and keeping pro sports out of college is worth having teams that underperform and him subsequently losing his job. There is a reason elite coaches have been leaving the coaching ranks. As fans we're caught in the middle.
Less than a year from now, we are all going to look back and remember Mitch/ AD basically had Billy Donovan standing on the porch with a big bow around his head, practically waiting for the job offer, but we instead all sat around our computers and discussed how the 5th option PF from New Guinea left the closing table without a commitment, only to have KU come in and make him Self’s replacement shortly thereafter!

As a guy who peruses a message board of other relevant programs, I can confirm with conviction that Pope is a laughing stock across the CBB landscape. His approach is so messy, then combine it with the luney tunes in the fan base and it's all a dumpster fire. I'm not even sure landing a Stokes at this point fixes the perception - only thing that would gain any respect is actually coaching whatever the end product is to an E8 minimum. You can't have 22mm dollars and almost get knocked out in R1 to a MM and follow it up with a stinker. The more toxic the situation is created, the harder it will be to get a legit coach in here. Anyone even contemplating will want a deep look under the hood.

I wouldn’t call what pope is doing here buidling, rather dismantling piece by piece. Year 3 will forego the piece by piece route though and just blow the damn thing up.
I’m not a Jones fan, but I put my dislike of him aside and listen to what he says/“reports” and decide for myself. If Pope were killing it on the recruiting front I would be dismissive of what others are saying. But Pope is struggling mightily and other leaders in his profession are commenting that Pope is an outlier in his approach.
If Im doing my own taxes and my effective tax rate is 40% and others with similar financial positions are at 30% while using an accountant and the accountants (other coaches) are saying I’m doing something wrong, well I probably need to find a tax accountant then.
Regardless of how next season goes..if he lands Stokes that will hush a couple people up. If he misses it's gonna get ugly. It's already ugly but that will be real bad

In public, yes. Behind closed doors, you can't hide from your blind spots at Kentucky. When you crash out, the whole profession is going to be talking about it. Some of those guys would kill for this job.
Pope Is the Ky coach & if you truly support the Cats ,then you’ll lay off the negativity & hope he pulls off a great year 3. I refuse to cheer for the team to Suck so we can fire our coach.
Im not happy with his performance & substitute patterns but the UK BRAND is bigger than one Coach Or player.
BTW Pope is 2 players away from having a 25 win team & a 4th year..
Pope really should at least be on speaking terms with the sports media in Kentucky. He could use them to his advantage, on PR and recruiting.I have never seen a college basketball coach take this approach with the sports media.
