So it is fair to say that we are out of the running for McCowen? Door completely shut or is she just checking in on these other options? Can’t believe with 2-3 openings we are being this non aggressive with targets. Still a lot of girls uncommitted but high quality options are all but gone.

Depending on what comes out I think it’s best to assume she will most likely not be at Iowa. Maybe something changes but someone just had the rug pulled on them, the coaching staff or the recruit and their family.

I hope we stay healthy next season so we don’t start having depth issues….

You heard of any names we are potentially looking at?

No show at the game...will be considering TCU and OSU. Still may end up in IC, but I wouldn't be too sure of any of that at this point. TBD.
OSU as in Oklahoma State? Iowa has no chance against their enormous bag then, nor against TCU's enormous bag.

My guess, the weird requirement is she wants to walk on the volleyball team. It's super weird because who wants to walk on the Iowa volleyball team? :p

You're correct on the oil billionaires rolling out the red carpet to bring in players at OSU and TCU Most OK and TX schools will have the upper hand on NIL.

OT but related: Hey, wanted to ask you since you were kind enough to supply the odds and potential score from HerHoopStats regarding WBB pregame, do you know or have you viewed any reports on player's defensive rating(s) or ranking(s) on that site that you view are credible?

Right now I'm using Torvik's 3 ratings to get an idea of a players defensive prowess. Like them way better than Sports-Reference.com DRTG which never made sense to me to get an idea of how well they rate to find 3&D players in the portal.

Only 312 players remain with 5 pts/gm or higher.

One good thing is we won't have to fight Minny for players as they just filled their 15 player roster.

How aggressive should we be at this point?

Who said or what makes you think we are not being aggressive? So much of this is behind the scenes talks that nobody knows about. I've said it awhile ago that Iowa probably has to look to 1 year players or players that or younger than the will be jr class as that class is already top heavy with Stremlo, Heiden, Chit Chat and now Carnegie all in the same class.

We will see. I'm going to spitball here, but I think the money that was originally offered on the visit to McCowan was not available on Monday when she tried to commit. Whiting committed 1st on 15th affectively taking a slot and money guarantee that was allocated to either one of them, although the money may have been slightly different. All I am going to say is she has had a very odd recruiting journey and I think this week blindsided them a bit. There may still be a possibility she could end at Iowa. To the best of my understanding Iowa still has an offer on the table -but not what they are looking for currently or possibly what was even offered a week ago.

LOL. Your three great sources obviously pulled the rug out from you. The other parties involved did not engage in "rug pulling".
You replied to the wrong one, that was me. . . and I stand by McCowan was ready to commit yesterday to an offer of money that wasn't currently available. It was well publicized the family intended to commit yesterday - and then things went sideways and I would assume they are trying to reassess their situation.

If you have more information on the situation please enlighten us. What I will say is so far @hawkbuck70 is still undefeated on his sources and information ;) . I should have taken that more into consideration. Even still I never said it was a guarantee and we would see what would happen.

do you feel Jan and company still have a lot of NIL to work with or are they pretty thin?

I'm guessing they have less than 300k for 4 spots. Maybe 50k to 75K for each remaining recruit. I think their budget is the 2 million to 2.5 million range from the school then whatever comes from NIL.

We lost Hannah, Deal, McCabe, Feuerbach, Gyamfi, Johnson, Mallegni and Levin. Added Woliczko, Carnegie and Whitting. I am thinking so far more money has graduated or left then we have added. Granted the girls that stayed probably got a bump. Still I bet the first 4 made a pretty sizable percentage of the available funds.

Stuelke, McCabe, Feuerbach, Deal = Carnegie, Whiting, Woliczko. Add in loyalty bumps/raises for the players staying. That leaves you with maybe what you had going to Levin, Mallegni, Johnson, Gyamfi. I guess the hope would be there has been more added to the pot.

School really doing the women's team a MAJOR disservice if that is all they are getting and the men are getting a lot more...especially considering the men cant fill seats at all. and the women's team constantly sells out

There was some updated information about what the school was allocating to players. The rest would come from the SWARM collective and any other NIL deal.

oofta.. hope they have more than that left. Only have 8 girls right now. Need to add 2-3 more and seen reports of them looking to at 3-4 in freshman class. With only whiting being a senior that’s gets very thin.

Getting that much of the allowed 20.5 million is much more than most universities are going to be giving their women's basketball program. 20.5 between all sports is not much to go around...most sports are getting nothing I would assume.

They don't. It might be even slightly lower than what I am estimating. Its why the current offer is pretty low to McCowan. Her issue is I am not sure what other options are still available to her. Iowa State is out. I thought someone had said TCU was done in the portal. So that leaves OSU if they are still interested.

I reside in Iowa City and do not feel a need to post information that I hear directly from a coach, athlete or administrator on a message board. That's fine for others to do but it's just not my style. I do apologize for being critical of you and your sources though. Not trying to antagonize posters who just want to provide information.

Well thank you - I don't pay for information and I don't have direct contacts. I do try to get accurate information and I try to be open minded to the available information. Its why I asked BuckHawk what he had heard about the visit to Iowa State- because McCowan's situation drastically changed after that visit. I would say you can still be generic without giving specifics. There were some definite legs to this rumor - and I do think they intended to try to commit. I also do think that family hasn't handled this recruiting cycle well at all and I think they are emotionally upset by by the turn of events from this weekend through whatever their interaction was with Iowa in the last 48 hours. I think for what they were wanting the Iowa State offer was the best option and for whatever reason it is no longer available. I have a sneaking suspicion she is one of the recruits that Lasondra Barrett was referring too - If I am trying to connect the dots. In either case Iowa still appears to be willing to accept a commitment. So we will see.

Do you think the offer to McCowan has remained the same during the last 2 weeks. If so then most of this is on the recruit on her family. If the offer did drop then there could definitely be an area where there was a misunderstanding or lack of communication.

South Carolina, UConn, LSU, Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Tennessee, Duke, Ole Miss, Maryland, and Texas are traditional programs in WBB that usually have plenty of money available to land the top stars in recruiting class and in the transfer portal. Now we’re also seeing programs like Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Kentucky, UNC, and Vandy entering the game with much money as well. I believe many programs were boosted by the CC Effect and are now managing to get more money to invest in WBB. A good business team would have made Iowa the biggest beneficiary of the CC Effect. There’s no point in denying the obvious: money matters and it makes a difference. Whoever has more money gets the better teams. If there are eight teams investing more money than Iowa in the WBB program, we’ll probably be far from the Elite Eight, and maybe there are even more than eight teams investing more than Iowa. Unless, of course, we find another Caitlin Clark who is willing to play without thinking about money. Instead of waiting for this miracle to happen and fall from the sky, a good business team would secure more money. But being optimistic, we have a solid group of eight players. For a program that doesn’t have much money, we managed to keep the core and add great pieces. Go Hawks.
