6-8 million to be exact. That’s what you give up with these Number 1 player s plus they seem to shut down toward the end of the season with lingering problems. Is Stokes better than Anthony Davis. I think he was the last to be number one and win a championship. Is Stokes good enough to win a champioship with 2or3 players from the portal? Options

You believe if Stokes commits to Kentucky, fans are going to conclude that Pope can recruit rather than saying we were his backup plan and we desperately overpaid to get him? Genuine question.
I suppose it depends on who we're talking to. For the most part, if Stokes turns out to be legit, yes I think most of Big Blue Nation would start to change their view on Mark Pope as a recruiter. Of course there will always be some who will critique him regardless of how well he does in recruiting. But as of now, he hasn't recruited anyone of elite significance. If Stokes performs at a high level, and he goes, let's say top three in the draft, yes I think that changes a lot about how Big Blue Nation would look at Pope.

I hope you’re right. 👍

if Pope pays him 6 million it doesn't mean Pope can recruit. It means Pope will pay the ransom to try and save his job. Giving a player multiple million more than other schools just means you have a lot of money to begin with. Eventually the guys with the money will quit while they can and wait until we get a competent coach like Dusty May.

No matter the portal player, it seems a coach has to outbid everyone else to get any decent recruit, and now that applies to incoming freshmen as well. It’s all about the money.

U forget we would have won n 2014 if wcs isn't out and 2015 if poy is healthy. And the refs cheating for Wisconsin. But yeah keep on talking
Well I plan on it. It's a forum. I said a valid statement my guy. Why is your coulda shoulda woulda a better statement than my coulda shoulda woulda.

Pope has to prove he can handle a 5 star kid and be successful with them. Yes he absolutely needs this kid. Having success with a one and done can lead to him getting more of those type of kids in the future, I believe. He’s way to easy of a target for other coaches to negatively recruit against right now

Zero sum games are for pussies. Our budget should be $50,000,000. We are Kentucky for cripes sake, let’s act like it.

2014
1. We win if WCS is healthy because those UConn midget ******* wouldn't have scored at the rim.
2. We also win if Julius Randle could've hit the front end of a couple 1&1's.

2015
1. We win because Poythress would've kept that white dude from scoring on the drives.

2. Even accounting for the dumb ****** Higgins bad calls, we win if Calipari had the balls to tell the Harrison twins to stop shooting 3's & to keep feeding the ball to KAT, Frank Kaminsky (sp) couldn't stop him.

Absolutely he is.

Last season we had four players, two of them redshirted, who were never even intended to score a point all year. Then we had two more who were paid and injured virtually all year. Two more on top of that who did us next to no good except for an occasional two-second highlight every three four fives games MAYBE if everything was going right and we got lucky (JJ a LITTLE more than that once or twice)….and never between them played any defense to warrant playing them with that little offensive output. Stokes is worth double all those guys put together easily.

Not to mention you’re not actually talking about foregoing any players in the real world. You’re actually talking about boosters paying out (or AD allocating out money from that infernal JMI deal haul) some extra percentage —up to about 30% max— of the money we’ll be spending regardless in order to prevent that money going nowhere like it all did last year and keep us from throwing good money after bad. You’d have to be an absolute fool not to want to protect your investment that way when your base investment is in the neighborhood we’re talking.

Working with a true stud is….I hate to say it…..the one thing Pope hasn’t failed at yet. So if we’re going to do this third year thing why on Earth wouldn’t we do it in the one way he still might turn out to be good at?

If I could build a reasonable team, it would look like this:
  • Super star 3 who averages 19 a game
  • 6'9, 235 lb PF who gets you 16 and 8
  • 7'1 center who goes for 10 and 10 and blocks a couple shots a game
  • Senior PG who controls the game
  • 6'5 SG who locks down the other team's best guard
And on the bench:
  • 6'9 athletic forward who can play 3 positions
  • 6'4 shooter who makes 40% of his 3's
  • Fast, change of pace PG.
And what that means:

  • Pay the first two guys I listed big bucks.
  • Pay Moreno to stay
  • Find the rest of the dudes in the portal at reasonable rates.

If Saul's scenario happened, my perspective on Pope would change, yes.
