I personally know someone whos a political refugee. If we deport them they will be tortured in prison for the rest of their lives because they dared to criticize the government.
Their permanence hearing has been rescheduled for 10 years....
Anyways, can we just deport the undocumented when they get convicted and move on? We dont need to have a military force hurting people. We can do it sanely
there's no question that our government is inefficient, and it's not just Trump's fault, it's been this way for years, decades.
We need to either enforce our laws, or change them. People can, and do, make a case for both. I'm all for changing our laws to more reflect today's reality, but trying to get that done is near to impossible in our current political environment. So we enforce the laws as they exist. And, if you are in the country illegally then you are subject to deportation...crime committed or not.
Now, the means exist to exempt some people - temporary VISA for farm workers; or construction workers; or people who have jobs, families, and have committed no crimes. But solely for political reasons we won't take it up.
As I have posted for years, we can't claim that "nobody is above the law" or "we are a nation of laws" if we just enforce those that we want and ignore those we don't.
And, I'm all for not having "a military force" hunting people. But absent the alternative - turn in undocumented people, or undocumented presenting themselves for deportation, or employers not hiring undocumented..what's the alternative? The federal government is charged with enforcing immigration laws. It would be nice if all of law enforcement contributed to that objective, but right now that's not happening.
