Would this be a good real estate investment?

Years ago we toured the Diefenbunker outside of Ottawa. It turned out to be very interesting. The Canadian government was to relocate there in the event of a nuclear war.

It's allegedly only 33-45 minutes away from State College.

Great find. When the power goes out, how long does the backup power last? I would assume if you live in a rural area you are safe until the fallout starts or living without power cretes more problems than you can overcome. A man can only eat canned corn for so long.

we watched A House of Dynamite yesterday to kill some time. The last 15 minutes of tracking an incoming missile is a wild ride. Big recommend.

I have driven the road where that map pin is located at least 1,000 times. I shot my first buck on the north side of the pin in 1968. Owned a cabin about 2 miles west of the pin. My brother owned his retirement house about 1 mile south of the pin. Was a member of the sportsman club about a mile west.

It is a beautiful spot probably 55 minutes to state college thru the mountain. A little longer by paved road. Great hunting. Great fishing in Penns Creek a spit away. If I had an extra 2 million, I'd grab it.

Having said all that, I question the pin location. I grew up running those ridges in 1968 and I do not recall seeing or hearing about any construction of that magnitude. Looking on Google Earth Pro at that pin location there I don't see anything that looks like that.

I don't doubt that this is for sale but I question where exactly it is.

My parents had lived in WV near the Greenbrier resort. The national media freaked out when it came out that there were secret bunkers underneath it for the US government if a nuclear war broke out. My parents had known about it for years because so many of the local people who worked on it talked; specifically their milkman talked about delivering product there.

I thought it would be very isolated but it's not too far from Laurelton.

While you're in the nuclear bunker waiting for the fire storms to end.........
just shot yourself and loved ones because you probably won't survive the nuclear winter that follows.

For sure. If there's a nuclear war I hope I'm taken out in the first wave. Neither nuclear winter nor mass starvation sound like much fun.
This is the way to go

In the 80's during the Reagan military buildup and height of the cold war, I worked on the Andrews Air Force Base flightline. We all decided that if anything every broke, we would step outside and watch the fireworks.

Good research. It might be difficult for the realtors to sell it if they can't even get the address correct.
That would be a correct address for where the pin is. Address was/is serviced out of the Millmont Post Office, not Laruelton. Rural delivery address.

Ok. I got it figured out and "pin" pointed. The red pins on the Coldwell Banker site and the pin on Realtor.com are wrong. The site is on Hassenplug Rd between Paddy Mt Rd and Rt 235 a little west of the Union County West End Fairgrounds. Realtor.com has what they call a fly around that showed me where it is.

I do remember them building at this location. It was behind a small hill on a gated road and was not visible from the road. Never knew what it was until now. Undeveloped land in the area is about $10,000 per acre.

In other Union County bunker oddities, the Alvira Munitions Bunkers. Went there once when I was in middle school with my brother and his buddies. Very eerie.
My father worked there. When I was a kid I found his white coveralls with big red letters POW on the back. I wondered what that was all about until I learned POW stood for Pennsylvania Ordnance Works.

Another interesting fact, despite promises that they would be able to purchase their property back after the war, good old Uncle Sam kept it. Not that there would have been anything worth buying back.

It's a really beautiful area. Can I ask where you all go to do grocery shopping and get hardware? State College? Lewisburg?

When I was a kid there was not much in Mifflinburg. Lewisburg was it for major groceries and general shopping. There was a small grocery in Laurelton. Later a larger grocery was built. Doctor in Mifflinburg. Dentist in Lewisburg. Never went west until college years. Even then groceries in Laurelton or IGA in Mifflinburg. Some few years ago I hunted on game lands near my house near Laurelton. Put my shotgun on my pickup bed cover and drove to the fairly new McDonalds in Mifflinburg. Someone behind me pointed this out to me and I recovered it before making my way back to State College.

When I was a kid, none of the roads currently marked with names on google maps were named. Everyone's address was RD and a route number. Ours was RD#1. The mail carriers had to know people then. Our mail carrier happened to be a neighbor. Had the last name on the mailbox. All packages were delivered by the USPS. FedEx and UPS changed everything. Using different drivers, they need street names and numbers. Now everything has a street name and number.

That’s a crackpipe asking price .
For $2MM you better be coming at me with Corian and stainless steel appliances for phocks sake.
Take a look at the photo of the kitchen focussing on the cabinet doors above the range. One door is larger than the other (which also seems to missing a knob). 🤷‍♀️

I would not be buying it for the kitchen or baths. Look at the mechanicals if all operational. Check the blast doors. You don't get those in a tract home.

Yep GSP,
In 76' my wife, two young kids and I moved from Harrisburg back to Luzerne County and stayed at my F-in-law's homestead (we call it the farm) and I do recall our new address was RD#?? Mail was delivered by USPS; FedEx was just starting to expand nationwide and not popular in our location.

Just thinking as I respond to your post, this will be 50-years we lived on the farm.

Pretty cool. Also has 9 acres and a 5000ft garage, crane to lowered material.

I would never pay 2m but you could not build it for that price either.
