Sounds like we made a good effort to keep him but he wants something else. Oh well. We’ll be fine.

The players also told Rhule to hire Butler as DC. Maybe Rhule should stop listening to the players and coach the game. Common sense says stop letting Barney return it to the 14 but it’s Rhule.

he let Dylan decide to go for it on 4th down against Cincy.

Would we? Our bowl performance wasn’t good at times in Las Vegas.
You mean when our STs coach was being pulled away to coach other position groups because the head man hired incompetent losers who he needed to fire after 1 season with no replacement? Thats on him? That he cant focus on his own position groups cuz hes doing someone else's job?

I'm talking mostly about his decision to let Barney return kick offs out of the end zone - especially the third time after the first two backfired. And his decision to punt it directly to their punt returner.
Well when your offense is scoring about 13-17 ppg against these types of opponents......and 90% of your offense is hurt or sitting out......Maybe they liked the idea of rolling the dice on the return game

And you know that he was told to return the kicks by Rhule and not Ek? People complain that Rhule is a micromanager and that is why White left. In this case, he let Ek coach the special teams and the drive started at the 14 because the ST coach was sure it was going to go for a TD.

We can't have it both ways.
Except for the huge caveat that DR and EJ weren't playing......did the 14 vs the 25 yard like matter when your offense is only scoring 14-17 ppg? The last 4 drives if the first half were 1, 8, 0 and 3 yards. And Nelson only rushed for 16 yards after the first quarter....maybe they were using ST to try and life support the offense...

We improved. We had one return TD right? Excellent all the time? No way. Better? Yes. Whatever. It’s not my money but the whole agents putting the squeeze on us rubs me the wrong way just like Rhule’s did to get the extension. Screw em. Stay or go. I don’t care.
So you get bent outta shape about agents trying to secure money for quality assistants, who are choosing to stay in a volatile position with no guarantee of a job in a year under Ozempic boy........but Rhules AD securing him a massive buyout clause and contract renegotiate, which is WAY more impactful to our program, that is one where "we dont have any control over what happens so sit down and deal with it. Husker fans should rejoice our maggoty bread like peasants, because its out of our control."

Got it....your hypocrisy is showing...

It’s not gymnastics. Foley was historically bad. We needed a snappper and kicker. EVERYBODY knew that. I don’t think Ek did anything this last fall that shouldn’t be expected of ANY competent special teams coordinator. We still had too many breakdowns. His punter was WAY over valued. Love the kid and I expect him to get more consistent.

IF Ek goes so be it. IF he stays that’s probably a good thing because who knows if our GM, AD or head coach are smart enough to find another competent coordinator from the hundreds that are out there.
Thats why Rhule said that Ek recreated the way STs are played and planned, and everyone is trying to hire Ek for the secret sauce, and if they cant get him, they are hiring his assistants, because the way he coaches STs is so innovative?

But yeah apparently lip licker thinks like you do, and that any hire above horrible wouldve given us the same results...

If Ekeler were to leave I wouldn't mind seeing Bill Busch come in, he's a proven coach that would do a great job and he lives in Nebraska. Not only has Bill coached special teams but many positions on the defensive including coordinator, he has a proven record. I will say one of Matt Rhule's biggest mistakes was when he was hired he did not retain Busch who was on the previous staff, Matt made the big mistake, he chose that former ST coach Foley? what a mess that was. By the way Busch is available and probably would love to coach again, he has a wonderful football mind and is a great recruiter, he would be a plus for the Nebraska football team. I just think Matt is too hard headed sometimes and needs direction when it comes to hiring the right coaches.
Busch is both disappointed that he wasnt retained, snake bitten even, AND has no interest in returning to coaching, especially at NU, under the current administration.

We just need to accept this and stop copy and pasting him to every position opening. Great coach. Great guy. Maybe even Great fit.....but hes done with coaching forever IMO and hes done at NU unless something crazy happened, probably a change at AD and HC. I have heard him voice this multiple times in person. Maybe some of its bravado, but I dont think so

Don't move the goalpost. The point of my post was that people are stating that Rhule is a micromanager and perhaps that is why Ekeler is looking around and why White left. From the looks of things, Ekeler was allowed to bring in an Aussie punter, establish his own systems and in this specific case override the HC by allowing the kick to be returned.

How is it moving the goalpost? We are going to lay the decision at his feet, but ignore the circumstances around making that decision? Cmon...lazy lazy losing argument

If he had done this all year.....sure, you have a case. The fact he does it in a bowl game, where we are desperate for a win, desperate for some offense, desperate to get the ball to Barney so he doesnt leave, etc.....that singular microcosm doesnt carry as much weight over the course of a season OR over the course of a 50pt blowout.

Did what all year? Not call fair catches? Play Barney over Williams? Ekeler had full control over the special teams all season long. If allowing the player to get a few kickoff returns is what keeps him here, then he is going to leave at some point anyway.

What are you talking about laying the decision at his feet? Literally every decision good and bad was his decision.

this is just one big trainwreck, in slow motion for the next couple of years.. have to get a new AD first
Yes. The Tulane DEI white night of New Orleans, and former Seattle resident.....was all I needed to know this guy was a cuck. Hated the hire then and still seething about it today.

But "the spin" told us he sat on all of these NCAA boards and he lived in the Midwest once.....He blends in well with diddler Pederson, dying Osborne, lawyer chopping man Eichorst, Drunken Moos, and DEI Dannen

Barney is lousy at returning kicks.

If you believe Wilson Dittman, he is as good as gone. If true, Mike is a smart man. He knows how this is going to play out for Matt in the not so distant future, and he doesn't want to be a part of a sinking ship. Can't blame the guy. Now finding a new special teams coordinator willing to sign a contract for 11 months will be the tricky part.

That's what "desperate for a win" coaching looks like? We are so f*cked! 🤦‍♂️

Just listening to Rhule sound like Eck is gone. He had that same look on his face when talking about Dylan before that news was announced. This is the second time he's talked about having guys in place that have learned under Eck and what he does. I'm just following the bread crumbs...hope I'm wrong but I don't think so. Loved Eck and what he brought to the team as a whole.

I don't think there's any rules against letting Ekeler help coach linebackers but keeping his special teams coaching title. It really comes down to ego perhaps and also if our new DC want's Ekeler helping out. Nebraska can match USC for Ekeler as far as salary goes but Nebraska can't make Ekeler the new LB coach without firing our current LB coach and Rhule won't do that.

So it comes down to title and let's face it USC really only wants Ekeler for his special team coaching talents, I'm sure they figure he can't screw up 4 and 5 star linebackers that much and they have a DC at USC who will tell Ekeler what to do. For me it's about ego's and title and what you're allowing a coach to do and we really don't know if DC Aurich and LB coach Dvoracek want Ekeler coaching defense, time will tell even if Rhule won't.

Opponents only returned 6 of 37 punts because they were low line drive punts or high short punts. Look I figured it out.

Nebraska kicked off 75 times, 34 were touchbacks 9 were fair caught, 3 out of bounds, 1 onside kick and 28 were returned. Nebraska utilized the high short kick that resulted in short returns.

The key to see if the strategy was successful would be to compare the kick/ punt return average to the average starting field position.
You always pick the dumbest hills to die on. Ekeler is an elite coach, period. And produced big turnaround in results in a short period.

I can't listen to Matt the Hat. He is fond of the phrase "All I can do". He comes across as a spineless, babbling dope.

so much coachspeak. uggh gonna puke..

My God. Just had the chance to listen to that. That is seriously one of the most cringeworthy things I've ever heard. "You know me, I'm never gonna BS anybody"??? Are you f*cking kidding me? 🤢🤢🤮
