What do you actually think seems off?

He’s most likely leaving for more money or just a change of scenery for various personal reasons. I don’t think there’s anything too complex about it.
The alarm bells are going off because I assumed we didn’t have much money for big ticket acquisitions because we paid a premium to retain guys like this. I feel like that’s been the narrative from the media at least.

Everything is circumstantial, but I have a hard time believing this is even a smart business decision. What’s the a good safety going to get for a premium on the open market? 5- 700k? I gotta imagine Iowa would give him something close to that. So is it worth 100 maybe 200 K to go somewhere else where they’re going to have no loyalty to you?
The problem is we have no idea what any of these guys are really getting from NIL. Does a starting safety from Iowa make 500-600K? I have no idea. Is he worth 800-1M to someone else? I’m guessing he’s been tampered with (though of course there’s no such thing anymore) and already has an offer for more money or he wouldn’t have gone. The whole situation sucks.

Lutmer was the best of the 3 "safeties" this year. I've never been a big fan of X (although I hoped a position change would help) and Entringer seemed like a great guy but his highlight tape almost begins and ends with the missed tackle and ensuing chasedown of an ultimately meaningless 90 something yard punt return stop.
I think it was against Indiana he had back to back TFL that were huge. I don’t think that was the only game either.

I don’t recall him ever getting burnt certainly not as much as X did. Part of being a good safety is not being noticed.

I’ll just say I’d much rather have him back then count on a sophomore safety from Villanova that we have no idea can compete this level.

You must have slept through the first quarter of the Indiana game.

yeah, that’s why it’s circumstantial certainly. Even if you know what the market is maybe Iowa wasn’t paying anywhere near market rate for him.

Up until bowl game we didn't know if was staying in college or turning pro, so had to have planned he might leave.

Not excited that a team captain decided to bail. He's from the state of Michigan..... and one of our coaches just joined a program there.......hmmmm

This will hurt the secondary yet am I wrong in thinking the last few games I didn't see much production from him, no? Seemed the corners and Lutmer were all over the place and he seemed to be much more involved in earlier games this season...hmm..
I honestly didn’t think he was that great all year. Lasting memory of him will be Emmet Johnson leaving him in the dust against Nebraska on that 70 yard run. I think Koen might have been hurt though.

Whoever his agent is needs to be blacklisted by Iowa. Kid is getting terrible advice. Can’t imagine he’s getting that much more on the market than what Iowa could give him.
I like this idea. Blacklist the agents. Not sure how that would fly, but there are hundreds of agents in college football, get rid of the bad apples. This is about the money. You know Iowa offered him a good package.

The paranoid side of me wonders if having Levarr and Fitzgeralds boys on the team is a good thing at this point. What if a less than happy player wonders if he could make more elsewhere? If they become good players and Michigan State needs them will they stay at Iowa then? Might be dramatic and definitely unfair to them but I don't love the dynamics

I’m not so worried from the standpoint of starters. I think Lutmer and the kid from Villanova will fill in nicely at safety. Put Godfrey at cash, with Wallace/Watson and Lee at corners and that’s a pretty good starting secondary. The problem is depth. With Kolarik and Koen gone, we need some help with depth.

He's a really good college safety. I don't think his pro prospects are great thought, so he probably needs to go make as much as he can right now with one more year of eligibility left. I suspect that is his thinking at this point. Can't say I blame him.

Meh, it's the weird new college football. I'll just assume unless the kid is from Iowa that there's a decent chance free agency pulls him elsewhere.

Basically other teams started offering more $$$ than he was getting at Iowa and he jumped for cash elsewhere.

Disagree, Geno Stone has made a nice career in the NFL. I think Entringer is better than Geno was. Could’ve seen Entringer on the Amani Hooker path, in my opinion (4th-5th rounder).

Obviously like others, did not expect this. Did not realize he was from Michigan. Leaving is rough enough but if to MSU hurts more. The Woods factor.

He was a starter, a permanent team captain, selected to represent the team at media days, and indicated a week ago that he was coming back.

So yeah, I’d say him deciding at the last minute to leave seems fishy.

I don't see Michigan St. They will be building a new program and next year will probably be a down year.

Not surprised, not even really mad... its a different ballgame now. We (the adults) are responsible for letting this snowball the way it has, the players hold all the cards. Welcome to the end of Collegiate athletics...
"We" aren't responsible for it. Many of us were calling for the NCAA to meet NIL demands when they first were made. You can't have everyone making big money off the players while denying ANY money to the people who make it all possible--the players. The fault lies 100 percent with the NCAA. Because they wouldn't treat players fairly, everything now is a mess. Simple as that.

Does not surprise me one bit.
Since NIL started with no guidelines everyone in this forum would do the same.
Money has changed everything about college sports,
It's not about going to your favorite college or a scholarship to set you up in a career anymore.
Only making easy money.
"Everyone"? Please do not presume to speak for anyone but yourself. There are people who don't follow the money. There just aren't many of them. But "everyone" is wrong as soon as you say it. "Easy money"? I'm not sure how easy the money is, but it is money.
