I don’t mean to sound naive, but was clempson one of the big bagman offenders?
Clemson had the IPTAY Club (I Pay a Thousand a Year) at one time and then it was actually boosters paying more than a thousand per year to IPTAY. IPTAY was designated as a booster club for the athletic department but it was well known in SC that Clemson players were getting money from bagmen. USCe had their own bag men as did all the SEC Schools.

But Dabo Swinney was right. At least on accident; paying players has made college football an absolute sh*tshow. I'm kind of digging his Pinstripe Bowl interviews - seems to give two f*cks about players opting out or whatever. This will be a fun game.

What is funny is now that all the money is out in the open, bama and Clemson not so great anymore.

The 'intent' of NIL was for student athletes to make money on commercials, jersey sales, etc. Im sure that when a player does a commercial, there is a contract or stipulations to that deal. If Drew Allar was getting a free vehicle, I kow the dealer had him sign something in regard to what Drew was expected to do for the dealer. So yes contracts need to be part of the paying of the players
Indeed. Wonder how the NIL deals for money from colleges are contracted? Hard to really specify "performance" in a contract given the variables (injury, poor coaching, difficult opponents, etc.). If a kid isn't cutting it on the field, and the coach benches him, doesn't that affect his performance in the NIL deal (who wants a jersey from a bench warmer)?

As far as the bowl games, I see those going away...when the audience isn't there. Right now, ESPN owns the postseason, so whether the bowls continue is really up to them. This, more than anything else, is most likely what will expand the playoffs.

I could be wrong but I think the court decision held that the NCAA and schools couldn’t prevent athletes from earning money while in school from legitimate business opportunities or use them for promotions without compensation. However, as Dabo says and you point out this has become a bleep show with schools basically having a budget and paying players to play and has little or nothing to do with genuine business opportunities.
I was under the impression that the colleges could spend a limited amount to the athletes from the athletic funds, Penn State is around 20 million a year.

"Record breaking", if you want to call it that, for ESPN and/or ABC in metrics that they concoct for themselves. You should sit in on a Disney earnings call when some analyst asks, as they always do, whether they make money on specific contracts. Responses are pretty entertaining.

I picture Matt Campbell, freezing his a$$ off, watching this game and exclaiming “Why?!” over and over.

Hey.....Miss Debbie Downer

If the sun is shining and little wind, could make for a great day for a game, especially a 12:00 start.

I understand that courts allowed payers to get a legitimate job just like any other student athlete. But now most of the NIL money is a flat out grift. That doesn't seem consistent with the court's decision. When NIL first started it was supposed to be independent from the school. The player would make his own deal just like any student could go find a job on his/her own. What changed?
FIFY.

You are correct. NCAA was supposed to set up a clearinghouse run by Deloitte that would review NIL contracts for commercial legitimacy. Never happened. Wonder why.

IPTAY was originally "I Pay Ten A Year." but that; was when int was set-up in 1934.

It did happen and does exist. It’s just ignored and/or easy to work around.

Bigger stadiums, luxury boxes, higher and higher ticket prices- none of that was driven by players.

This is on the fans who wanted winning above everything.

Going to class, decent behavior, becoming good citizens- all that used to matter once. I seem to remember an old Italian coach who cared about such things. Nobody does now.

Yep.

And anyone with familiarity has to - I believe - expect that very soon the media folks are going to become rather forceful wrt demanding much more decent product (not loads of games between Ohio State and Rutgers or PSU and Purdue etc)

At some point that likely means not only "selective scheduling" (more good v good) but also cutting loose some of the flotsam programs.... "conference" membership driven by (or at least influenced by) media "partners".

I don’t think anyone would deny the truth of what Dabo was saying but it wasn’t something that could have been prevented. Paying players was going to happen. The US is a capitalistic society, gotta take the good with the bad, and paying college players is hardly the worst aspect of this society.
Paying players is fine. Letting them create a new system while the adults were arguing with each other ( or ignoring each other ) about how to put guard rails in place is ruining this and other college sports. It is what it is.

Bad behavior by players, and cheating/rules violations by coaches are largely the teams winning . It’s outta control .

There are negative consequences like any hope that these players are student athletes is out the window. Also that they can just bolt at a minute's notice.

With that said there are some good things. The biggest in my mind is you now can have an Indiana or a Vanderbilt emerge. Although Indiana's ascension is more portal and great coaching but I do think Cuban is helping them with NIL. It is refreshing to not see Bama in the championship game every year because they have every 5 star recruit out of high school which was the only way to procure talent and they paid them behind the scenes to boot. Can't compete against that.

Yeah with Georgia, Smart seems to escape any criticism about why there are so many off the field problems. He wins and so no one bothers to scrutinize that his program is essentially the modern day "the U".

The down side is big football schools are going to make it almost impossible for their basketball team to ever field a competitive team and vice versa. For example, Kentucky spent something like 85% of their NIL budget on basketball. Didn’t leave much left for football.

Most watched is tricky though because there's so many alternative ways to watch these days--not everyone has cable
But FBS TV ratings are insanely good right now

Winning does make concerns disappear but Smart generally disciplines his guys.
I think more people simply accept 18-22 year old kids do stupid things and Georgia takes a lot of risks on kids--that pays off big times but has these negatives as well

I wasn't a "Fire Franklin" guy until the NW loss but who cares about GPA?
The key is giving players the opportunity to get an education--it's their job to use the resources available to them to have success
If they decide not to--that's on them

I quit caring about Franklin and his GPA the day after he was announced as PSU's head coach.

WE ARE BETTER....Franklin's gone. 🙏🙏
Maybe.

You are still making the same mistakes. You round everything up.

Rounding up, Campbell is only a 7-5 coach the last 10 years.

Nice positive spin for Kirby. You can say he has a lack of discipline running through the program but like I said he wins so nobody cares that much what is happening with his players off the field. If he just came off his 3rd straight 8-4 season then it probably is viewed differently.

No one cares about that in general when any team is having success. When a coach starts losing its only brought up to help the argument to get rid of them.
Honestly we're dealing with young kids...they're going to do stupid things...the question is how stupid. I don't blame any coach for that.
Remember Zordich getting an underage like 5 months after a DUI. Kids are stupid. You just hope they learn before they do something so stupid you can no longer try to help.
