Completely unprecedented for a FBS Coach to be fired and rehired a month later, in-season - and by a P5 Program no less. Completely unprecedented - FBS coaches that have been fired have never been hire immediately, let alone by a P5 program - they have been forced to take a step back to a Coordinator position if they wanted to continue their coaching careers.

Kraft has utterly nuked the roster and totally screwed whoever the next coach is... they're going to need to bring their own core group of players if they want any shot of being successful.

Why VT? Just by reading some posts on this board, I figured LSU or FL would have given “big game James” a lifetime contract at 15+ million!

Guessing some of you JF lovers can move over to the VT board and stay there.

I commend his courage. It would be tough to go back on a field after the disaster here this year. Booed off the field, chants to fire him. Right back on the horse. VT, that may be a tough *** ride going up against Clemson, Miami, GT, Louisville, even Virginia and Pitt are decent now too.

PSU going after VT for a deal that they feel was sub-market sounds like a worst case scenario. Doubt we want this to land in a court room where we're arguing that the guy we fired for poor performance is so good that he deserves more $.

As I mentioned before, we took full advantage on the other side of things with the sub-market deal that we gave Manny Diaz...likely knowing that Miami wasn't going to want to fight it.

Hopefully Sexton is getting him paid big $ at V and it's all moot.

I'm not a lawyer, and it's been years since I've stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, but......... To me, we fired Franklin because he wasn't worth what we were paying him, how can you go after him if his new school pays him less than what we said he wasn't worth? What is the number that Penn State thinks he is worth?

That's what I'm thinking. This is likely to become a real challenge for us in the DMV. The challenge that Locksley promised but couldn't deliver on.
Next coach for PSU better be leading a herculean recruiting effort and top-tier staff. Retention of some coaches already on board could help.
I’m hoping we won’t need to lean on the DMV

Can PSU pull enough talent out of Mt Carmel and Pottsville to make up for what CJF is going to pull out of VA and MD?
I would just wait to see how that plays out. His so-called used car salesmanship is out there for all to see now. While he is great to his players NIL has changed the game forever that's one plus that's not something that Franklin ever fully embraced and I doubt VT has the big money to really compete in the NIL marketplace, maybe for a big player here and there but they won't be a force in NIL that's for sure.

For sure, HS recruiting will remain a "thing", obviously.

But I expect that PSU's "roster competitiveness" over the next few years will hinge far more on "portal" than HS recruits.
Longer-term, depending on how the landscape plays out, "portal" could become the more important avenue for just about every team (but, that of course will vary on how the legal/regulatory landscape plays out). Obviously.

PS: Under the new coach, what is the new "buzzword" going to be?
We should be going for far fewer under the radar type recruits that Franklin went for and more high value targets.

I give Franklin credit for his evaluations and being able to get those guys coached up which will be right up the VT alley.

It’s not a football example, however in P4 college basketball there is an example of a coach being fired in-season and rehired by another P4 program. In 1989, Bo Schembechler fired Bill Frieder as head basketball coach of Michigan. During the same season Bill Frieder accepted another job at Arizona State. Steve Fisher replaced Frieder during the tournament and won the 1989 National Championship.

I can't believe any university could be that stupid and/or desperate.

Other than the Kevin Jones show, has PSU lost out to VaTech on any decent recruits?
They got a couple guys through the years that we wanted but only a couple.

Relative to mid-season firings and hirings EVERYTHING has changed just look around college football everyone looking to make a change is doing it midseason.

FWIW, LSU offered Kelly $30mm - and was willing to drop the mitigation clause - but he refused. PSU got Franklin to $9mm and are suckers for paying it. He’s easily going to make more than his buyout at VT.

The DMV has been very good to us. National recruiting, and especially out of the South, is important, certainly.

IF... IF the rules around xfers and NIL ever change with some common sense injected into them, HS recruiting could become important again. Or at least on par (ish) with the portal.
And I recognize that "common sense" might only come around with some sort of contract being in place. Not ideal, and I know there's a big effort to work around that.

High value targets are just that..high value. So, PSU would be competing with the big boy NIL schools for this targets. OSU, Oregon, USC, Texas, A&M, etc. I’m not sure PSU can match dollar amounts with those schools.

PSU has recruited the DMV for as long as I can remember. Some of our best players have come from there. It’s part of the PSU recruiting footprint. Not landing players out of that area would be a big blow to PSU football.

Brandon Smith, Chris Bell, Ricky Slade, Devyn Ford…recently it hasn’t been great. PA, OH, NJ, and MD much more important IMO. We did get MRob though…
