The Offensive Coordinator Doesn’t Matter

In case anyone had any doubts.

Every route is underneath and horizontal. Every. Single. One.

Hard for any offense to be successful when you play offense inside a phone booth.

Kirk needs to break Woody’s record and retire.
I thought Tim Lester was the OC?

I just don't understand why? Why is he so averse to modernizing the passing scheme? Even if it resulted in 6 more INTs / yr there's absolutely no way having some semblance of a pass game wouldn't make up for it.

Ferentz has optimized for the floor instead of the ceiling for the sake of 7 wins and job security, but as long as Parker is DC there's virtually zero chance that updating the antiquated 3rd down offense drops Iowa to 5 win seasons.

After watching Lester's passing schemes for two years I've come to the conclusion he doesn't have a clue. We simply have no vertical passing game.
The question is and will always be how much influence Kirk has on those passing schemes. All these 3 yard outs look eerily similar to the days of Greg Davis.

At some point, you have to realize there’s a common denominator.

I know this is one of those internet posts….

but

I have a coworker who has a very strong connection with a player on the team.

In a meeting this week, another person brought up the 44 passing yards for our big transfer prize.

Connected coworker said “Mark is a great leader and athlete, but his arm is either shot or it’s not fully recovered from surgery. Don’t be surprised by any of this “

There’s something off with MG. Inaccurate. Seems to struggle with touch/pace….guess we’ll see if his arm gets better in November ;)

Once again a functional offense is the only thing stopping this team. Defense appears to be plug and play at this point.
A guy in our circle tried to convince me that Lester had complete control of the offense because that's what had been said/reported in the media. Yeah, he gets to call what he wants...within the parameters that he has agreed to with Kirk. As Henry Ford once said "You can have whatever color you want, as long as it's black".

There's your proof of how Kirk views his QB. He doesn't really have to throw it well. Just manage the game.

I know he wont be fired. But the longer kirk is around the further it burns down. And there is nothing we can do but watch. For over 5 years we have been saying this. You cant fire him. But damn this is a scary time for our program.
How deep is the burn?

Who is your pick
Someone with no connections to the current staff. I don't have a name in mind but I also don't get the infatuation with continuity or the "Iowa way." Isn't the Iowa way the reason everyone is tired of watching the same ****? I'd love for the defense to keep its top 20 status but not if it means refusing to even attempt anything on offense.

At the very least, the Iowa secondary isn’t close to being as bad as I had originally thought.
TJ Hall is solid. Entringer is very good, X looks better playing at his more natural spot (which is where he should’ve been from the beginning instead of Skidmark Schulte).

Lutmer has been a very nice surprise, but I’d like to see more from Lee.

I know this isn’t secondary related, but I had a player’s dad tell me a few weeks ago that Sharar was head and shoulders above the other LB’s. Mike and Leo were a mess, nobody was standing out; but Carson was unquestionably THE guy at Will. And he had showed that in spades. He’s an excellent player.

Sorry about the game.

But seriously, watching a Ferentz offense in 2025 is like being stuck behind an old guy going 3 mph under the speed limit. It has to be so maddening for you guys.
You new here? What's the 2025 stuff? This slo-mo-o has been a fixture for several years.

Because the receiver slipped on his cut. Are you even watching the game?
That ball was going to be picked either way. He was sitting on that route. Klatt had been asking for about 10 minutes off and on before that play for Iowa to use some sort of double move.

Yes. Too bad more can't see this. Apathy sets in where fans start to stay home more, spend less on merchandise, lower expectations (we can't recruit to Iowa, this is as high as we can go, never get to the playoffs b/c too many bluebloods, etc. Less $ revenue from tickets, fan merch., donations, etc will impact all programs including BB and Bb. Image seen by the younger kids may many to become Clone fans instead of Iowa fans (much like how Pepsi finally figured out how to compete w// Coke by marketing to younger audience and establish brand loyalty sooner)

The buyout may be a lot, but letting KF further devalue the program may end up costing the university and the program more in the long run.
I don't wish KF any ill-will but I really hope this is his last year since he'll get the record.

I don't see where you can definitively say the ball was going to be picked.

Seems unlikely considering that the ball was thrown first, then Wetjen fell, then the DB broke

Never has been, Right now Kirk's ego is bigger than his win total....he isn't going to change and Iowa's offense going to look like 2nd graders playing it till the fool retires!

Now that we have a QB who can run a little bit and 3 decent RBs, why don't we just switch to an option offense? At least then there would be a legitimate excuse for a horrible passing game.

I'm starting to agree. I drank the kool-aid on the whole "Lester has the keys" and "the offense will be better schtick. It's clear that any OC will only have the keys to a vehicle governed at 25.

One very simple thing to me suggests that Lester really is only working within KF's framework. I watched a couple old WMU highlights and there Lester's QB's clapped their hands to snap the ball. Think about that, the clap-count that 97% of the country uses is too sexy for KF and therefore he told Lester there is no f*****g way my QB will clap his hands out there.

Also when's the last time we saw a sweet trick play out of the Special Teams unit? For a few years it was actually entertaining to see the punt or FG unit out there. He continually coaches like a 7 point favorite when he's an underdog with zero to lose. The last few years of Brian broke him into thinking we can only win one way. Great guy, good coach, build him a statue but personally I can't wait till he's gone.
