Very fitting this year for Catholic to play this game at Carter-Finley. Coach Oddo played at NCST and was I believe All-ACC/All-American there(remote can correct me on that). So very fitting.
All ACC for certain. Don’t think I’ve seen his picture up for the all Americans.

My prediction is that Havelock wins this one. If I didn’t have family coming in town I’d venture over to Carter Finley to watch. Unless there are restrictions in place from Coop still.

Coach, All ACC. We also have a clipping that shows he was 3rd team All American in 1957. Also played in the Blue Grey All Star classic when there were only two post season all star games.

Not this time. They are way better than that team you all played last time.

Coach, I agree on paper Havelock has distinct advantages and rightfully should be favored. We are kind of young, Our QB is a sophomore and there is one freshman and two sophomores on the OL . Our OL scheme is not for the inexperienced and our OL play is essential to us grinding out first downs. Our offense does not work well unless we can grind out first downs.

However, we hear the same story all the time. Last year as an example no way we could hold down the high powered South Nash team. At one point in the season we were 2-3 written off, eliminated with no chance at a three peat. Southern Nash had a 2600 yard running back with 45 touchdowns, A QB who also rushed for over 1,000 yards. They averaged over 50 points per game. Yet we held them to a touchdown and 44 points below their average. Their great RB had about 65 yards and I will say he was really tough. Two weeks ago we got torched by Crest in the first quarter. Zippo points the rest of the game. We goosed egged our second round opponent and then held a high powered Monroe team to no points until very late in the game. I will add Monroe is wide open and has a highly touted WR ( 3rd rivals ranked player in the state). The week before they put up 35 points on a very good Kings Mountain Defense.

I would not bet against us even when it appears we are totally out of our league. We are used to playing difficult teams and being in difficult games. Our kids have not only played in the toughest conference in the state but over past two years we have played some of the toughest schools in the country. Our Playoff game last year against Kings Mountain was EPIC ( seven overtimes).

Last time we played it was a closer game than the score indicated. The game turned on several fourth down plays. No doubt the competition we play provides us experience in a tough difficult battle.

I agree on paper you guys are special and should win by 21 points. We like playing in these types of games.

I haven’t seen CC in person in several years, but they always have my respect for being a hard nosed, disciplined, and well coached team.

I recently witnessed Havelock’s complete dismantling of WA and found Havelock to be scary-good. Coach Snuffer (WA) commented that Havelock’s offense was one of best he has ever seen. I do not see any area of weakness in Havelock’s team; not in any facet of the game. Even the kicker is good.

This being said, I’m picking the Rams. But it’s just my opinion and realizing that I have not seen the Cougars in 2021.

Would love to attend but prior commitments will keep me away.

Best of luck; congratulations; and safe travels to the Cougars, Rams, and their fans!
If you haven't seen Catholic play in several years, there is nothing new. Whether you look at tape from 25, 20 10, 5 years ago or this year, it is the same plays. Occasionally there is someone like a Starcevic, a Herlocker or a Hood (father and son) that stand out but whether the team is from the Oddo years or from the more recent Brodowicz teams, if you took away the numbers, it would all look the same regardless of year. They run at you downhill, then mix in misdirection and the occasional play action pass. They will run from a double wing, straight T and traditional wing T alignment but its the same plays and 5 or 6 plays start out the same so it is almost useless to key on a formation or player. Defensive players have to play their position and gaps, otherwise they are 5 yards downfield before contact.

A high school reporter once asked Oddo, "What do you do when you run into a team that is bigger, more athletic and just as well coached as you? They will give you problems." Response: "That type of team gives everyone problems but we are still going to show up and see what happens." The reporter followed up with, "Yeah, but they will put 11 in the box and shut you down." Response, "I want all 11 in the box. After a quarter, you find some safeties and OLBs that don't want to be in the box and things begin to loosen up." If Havelock has 11 that like being in the box and play disciplined, Catholic will have problems. If they don't, advantage Catholic as the game will be shortened with only a handful of possessions in each half.

Good luck to both teams.

I used to hear coach Oddo say "I want those Corners and safety's to have to come up to the line and play football, that's going to be hard for some of them". He really felt the way to negate the other teams superior speed was to get them up to the line and get hats on em, not just let them run around as fast as they could.

Anyone ate at Nellies Southern Kitchen up in Belmont? Any good?
Good atmosphere. A lot of locals eat there quite often. In my opinion and that’s all it is opinion, the food is OK. I’ve been in a couple times and haven’t been impressed.

Havelock has about 4 or 5 A to A- grade playmakers who can bust out a long run or reception in a heart beat. CC has a bunch of B level players with size and who play together to equal an A grade overall. No other team I've seen in the state plays a methodical game better than CC. It helps keep them in games against faster teams like Havelock. The Rams can run up the score quickly and I actually fear they might do that, but then let off the steam allowing CC to scrap their way back into the game. But I think Coach Wooten is pretty smart and will manage the game right. I won't make a prediction but I want my hometown Rams to win.

Apparently Kamarro Edmonds does too. He will play football at UNC later this year. Instead of going early to spring practice with the 'heels - he came back to grab a state title. He's one of the few freshmen on the team that lost the state title to CC. Pretty sure he will be up for this one.

It's never over until we say it is... Was it over when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor?... HELL NO!
I am one Protestant who is pulling for your kids. Love the style of play. I don't by into all the recruiting nonsense, heck we probably do more of it that Catholic. All I ever see are well coached, well disciplined kids who always look overmatched physically but then you look up and there is only 3 minutes to go and they have you down, and they're driving again..

Good luck

This game will look similar to Crest or KM games, multiple overtimes or Catholic scores last for the win.

I bet CC loves to play the small and slow card. My guess is they are not nearly as slow, small and I unathletic as they lead you to believe.

Catholics kids are athletic. May not be the fastest kids, but they're athletic. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

I don't see Catholic fans playing the small but were slow card. I see other teams saying they are way faster and more athletic and we can not keep up with them. I have never quite understood the thought that " Big, fast athletic teams give Catholic trouble. Don't big fast athletic teams give everyone trouble.

I think it is a safe to say this year we are more capable on the defensive side of the ball than on the offense side of the ball. We are younger then we typically are on the OL. It is safe to say we are solid and experienced on defense. Two teams in our conference were pretty explosive. Monroe who hung 35 points on Kings Mountain and averaged almost 39 points a game ( not including the two games against us) and Weddington who averaged 48 points a game ( not including us). Weddington scored seven points and Monroe (we started their year and ended their year) went seven quarters with a goose egg and finally scored midway through the fourth quarter in the second game. Crest smacked us in the face in the first quarter but not because of speed.. but because they made a two great play calls and blocked the point of attack on two of their long touchdowns plays as well as I have seen all year. The third touchdown was bad fundamentals on our part. I have to give Crest credit as they smacked us in the face. We adjusted and after the first quarter we handled them much better. No points.

I am pretty sure that looking at Havelock schedule and games I could find, they have not played anyone as fundamentally sound on defense and who can generate as much of a pass rush as Catholic can. We will also see if we can move the ball on them. It will be an interesting match up.

If you guys keep comparing this havelock team to teams on the west that u think are athletic u are in for a surprise. This isn't the same weddington team without Ship, im not buying the 7 point moral victory. This team is explosive with a back like Shipley but stronger and meaner. This will be a good game, but I dont think its gonna go like 2017 when Havelock didn't know what to expect from CC style and underestimate them by the looks. They know these guys can play and this team is gonna be ready

Not really. Do they have some advantages? Yes. Do they have some disadvantages? Also yes. However, saying they are small and slow is the equivalent of a political talking point. Sounds good when repeated over and over and many start to believe and repeat it despite the fact that there is absolutely no truth in it whatsoever. Catholic has some size where the need to have it. They have had a few burners in the past that could take it to the house but not many. They do have a very developed culture in that they expect to win every time they step on the field. Most of their kids that have been playing with each other and the wing T since 6th grade if they go to the middle school that that feeds the high school and most do. Coaches of one school towns and school districts that feed themselves understand this. They are never loaded with D1 talent or many college recruits at any level for that matter, but they execute and will seldom beat themselves. They are good at making the most of what they have and minimizing other teams strengths. They also play a different style offense that high school teams seldom see and opposing coaches don't like preparing for. Not trying to be controversial here but, on average, the kids are probably a little smarter because if you flunk a course there or violate a strict behavior policy, you are gone and they have lost some athletes over the years. Of their entire student body, almost all go onto college or the military, including the academies. The bottom end of the academic scale gets weeded out or falls out over time. No one at Catholic is crying about small, slow and disadvantaged and don't sound credible doing it. The results speak for themselves.

So you are saying the reason Havelock lost in 2017 was because they underestimated CC and didn't know what to expect? No. That CC was just flat better than Havelock. Period.

Been on these boards for a while and a few posters have played the card over the years. CC and Charlotte knows the type of team they have and some folks, particularly in the East, think that speed will expose a weakness. Turns out that fundamentals, technique, discipline, effort and better athletes than many think counter the speed effectively. I didnt mention coaching which, according to the late Jack Holley, is 80% of the equation.

Hoping Havelock finds a way to win this one.

Good post. Catholic has the coaching base tagged pretty hard. Most of the coaches have been there for many years and the newest coaches are former players that are bought into the system. Many former players are also coaching the middle school teams that feed the high school. Continuity is key. Havelock appears to maintain that continuity factor too as they have a history of deep runs and championships. The 80% factor rings true. Whether it is 1A, 2A, 3A or 4A, every year it seems to be the same cast of characters in the playoffs plus a few upstarts. Common denominator, an established program with good coaches and continuity. An established program has the ability to go a few rounds, even in a "down" year. When you get to the late rounds, it boils down to execution, athletes, matchups and, in some years, a little luck.
