Great win, but stop with the ref whining...

I usually just watch the Yahoo! updates for MBB unless I am at the game and at one point the differential was very big towards Northwestern.

Guess we caught up.

The reffing sucked. All of a sudden the refs called foul after foul after foul after foul out of nowhere. Just really poor reffing.

ZERO CONSISTENCY

They start calling complete nothingness randomly out of nowhere
I will agree that it was a bit inconsistent, but I didn't think it was that unbalanced, as we're simply more aggressive on D

The refs were definitely a factor. Fouls may have ended up 15-12 but they put them in the bonus with like 12 minutes left in the second half. They had like 3 fouls at the time. Considering the defense both teams play that’s ridiculous.

12 fouls in the second half is ridiculous. I doubt that we see this kind of disparity again. The officiating can’t be this inconsistent from game to game, let alone half to half.

I thought it was an obvious flop.

Maybe it's not something that is typically called, but unfortuneately Paul has a reputation.
Possibly Paul had been doing it and getting away with it since he had been playing organized basketball

And now it is looked for by the refs and called. Paul has to change and get away from that

Was only a 15-12 foul disparity and we deserved most of them, including Paul's almost flagrant dumb foul at the end and on top of that we had Paul's two stupid flops. The only game I recall being really pissed at the reffing was Purdue, where it was 24-11 in fouls and 28-11 in FTs, in Purdue's favor in a game where so many touch fouls were called on us and very few on them. Our implosion at the end was almost all self-made with bad TOs, bad fouls, missed assignments and bad shots. Thankfully, the team came back to win it on the back of freakin' Cam Spencer scoring 5 of the last 7 points in the game and 23 overall, including the huge trey and the 2 FTs at the end - onions!!

Paul did have 12/6/6 and 2 steals and a block and Mag/Hyatt both had nice nights with 9 and 10, respectively. Cliff only had 4 but played much better in the 2nd half on D with 11 boards overall and 2 blocks and altered a few more. Caleb struggled on O, but played mostly great D. Nice to win with subpar performances from Cliff and Caleb and not much from the bench (Simpson had a weak game too) - going to need more bench play and production in the future though. 11-18 from three is the stat of the game though.
TERRIBLE take.. there was one ref clearly out to call fouls on Mag... and he called 3 on him. One time on a Rutgers inbound he leaves teh sidelines to approach Mag and say something to him when all he is doing is leaning over at the foul line, hands on knees, sucking some air before the ball is inbounded. Then, he makes a call because Mag ran around a DEFENSIVE pick and got some contact. Awful call.

At least 4 times the ball was clearly off NW and they game them the ball. Not only did one ref make the bad call, but the guy with the next best view nods his head in agreement when both were DEAD WRONG.

That was some bullshite. As were some of the charge calls and flop calls. Complete and utter bullshite that gave NW the ball. That's at least 6-7 possessions just given to NW by refs.. well beyond the range of missed calls that "go both ways".

They had 2 guys.. 34 and 31 routinely setting and holding on moving picks. The big goon 34 also tried to trip/kick Mulcahy late in the game to get a call and go to the line. He would also run straight into Mulcahy and get Mulcahy called for a "common foul" after they figured that could not hang a technical on him and get someone other than teh goon to the line.

Just crazy bad.. no, nod bad.. biased.. or CHEATING refs.

We live in a crazy age of greed where everyone wants theirs... that refs in teh college game might have other motivations than to ref a good game warrants completely reasonable suspicion. That was some BS.

I'd say the flops were legit - but if you're going to call flopping tight like that, then NW had another 2-3 that should have been called, too. Can't single out one team, imo.

Glad we got the win, but definitely felt like there was a thumb on the scales at times.

You are insane. The only reason they went on that 10-point run was the officiating. This should not have been a close game at all

For all the **** people give to someone like Paul, saying he will get a reputation or whatever..

Maybe we should hold the ref whose ******* job it is to do this to a standard of professionalism? Calling a player differently because you don’t or do like them should be grounds for dismissal

Watch the replay. Audige hits Paul with the body which is a foul. Paul embellished and fell back but that was irrelevant because Audige hit his body. If I could cue it for you I would.
I watched it very closely and I disagree completely.

NW guy totally bumps Caleb so ball went out on us and they didn't call it. Stuff like that they went go for Northwestern and we were getting ticky tack calls even without the 2nd Paul flop. The 4th Mag foul was the NU player tripping over Cliff.

It's not about not liking Paul, it's knowing he does stuff like that, which makes the call easier to make.

Get some glasses you need them. I would take the tape and take those 5 straight bogus calls to the league office so they can discipline those refs. They let NW get back in the game. Open your eyes.
Except for the disparity in our favor to start the game. That’s how officiating works. Today and every day. Refs will even it out by the end. We even got bs calls toward the end to get to the bonus.

The thing is... if they call that second flop on Paul, refs could call that in every game all the time. They never do. Why call that one?

That flop call was low on the list of complaints though. The refs went through a sprint of fouls there just non stop whistles. It's totally unnatural to call a game like that out of nowhere. It seemed forced and contrived like they had the intent to call fouls and were looking for a reason to blow the whistle

Didn’t really mind Mulcahy fouling Nicholson. It wasn’t a flagrant and the guy hadn’t made a free throw all night. Ended up splitting the two.

Both offensive fouls they called on Spencer were absolute garbage.

NW is also a physical defensive team, and handsy with two guys always hawking for steals, and we were going to the rim much more than they were.... yet at one point in the 2nd half, we had 12 fouls to their 5.

I don't really disagree with any of the calls against us, though some may have been tight... but that tight whistle blew one way more than the other. Can't call us tight and give NW more leeway with contact.

If that’s the case then the Ref missed the original foul and Paul did flop (which was called because the Ref missed the original foul).

OP is not wrong, but Pike himself was particularly pissed at the inconsistent whistle tonight and made that clear, without whining, in the post game.

The 2nd flop call was bizarre. Totally agree. Happens every game all the time. 3pt shooter gets grazed and falls down. That is VERY RARELY called if ever. But Ofcourse these idiots called it

Now my thought on the first flop - “come on paul” :)

Fouls against Cam were awful. Never saw a flop called on a three. Paul was hit so not a flop. Bad calls. Caleb pushed out of bound.

No flops or walk against NW but so quick to call against it against RU.

Only reason NW was in the game was due to refs. In the bonus so early. Late fouls of 12 to 15 doesn’t make it right. Cliff pushed out of bounds.

Coach saying we can’t defend the foul line is all that needs to be said.

We won’t complain when it becomes fair. Don’t stick head in the sand!!
