A woman has the freedom to do whatever she wants with her body. But this problem is not only about her body. It also involves a man’s reproductive rights and the baby’s rights.
Wasn’t me who designed the human reproductive system such that it creates such an unfair and non-ideal situation. You could take it up with God or with Darwin, I suppose.

Funny thing about the baby’s rights. Most so-called pro-lifers only care about fetal rights. Once the fetus is born and becomes a baby, all pro-lifers immediately lose interest. No? You still care? Then surely you’re okay hiking the tax rate to house, feed, clothe, and educate all these unwanted babies, right?

Or is that not your problem?

When there is a 35 week fetus involved I do. And since, outside of China, about half are female I don't think it's crusty old men advocating male dominance.
The Chinese a hundred or more years ago used to drown any newborn female as they considered them inferior and unproductive in the fields . Is that what some of these people are advocating ? Nobody is attempting to stifle anyone’s choices… just attempting to hear all sides.

Fat, gross, post menopausal womyn with no children scream the loudest about killing other people's babies.
The best is most have no desire to procreate nor want anything to do with a child of their own.

Hey I’m good with that taxes are taxes….we ‘re already doing that with over 2 million illegal border crossers now in the country. At least this child would be born in the USA and a legal citizen.

It's actually kind of fun watching certain male forum members build strong cases for their misogyny across several posts without being aware they're doing it. The ethical gymnastics of someone venting their misogyny whilst believing themselves engaged in saving fetuses while not GAF about the rest of the baby's life is pretty entertaining.

We should define degrees of difficulty and get some hypocrisy judges for the competition. 😀

That makes you unusual in that most people do not want higher taxes for themselves.

I'm not fine with it. I would prefer we greatly improve border security (using technology, not physical walls), cut down on illegal immigration, and would prefer we work to become much more fiscally efficient and then lower taxes wherever it's sensible and possible.

And you know for a fact that this child if not aborted and allowed to be born will suffer in his or her lifetime? Ask those who were not terminated and went on to greater things. Would they have preferred the alternative ? Your education is failing … think about that statement you made.

Nowhere in my post did I suggest knowing anything at all about any child anywhere born under any circumstance. Nor have I advocated for women having abortions anywhere in what I've written. I certainly never said anything remotely like that I think women should have abortions.

My entire stated viewpoint is that nobody on the planet has more of a right to determine what to do with their body and whatever is inside it than each individual human. Our right to self-determination over our bodies exceeds any other person's rights except, perhaps the baby in the case of a pregnant mom. But the baby isn't speaking and nobody that can speak has more right to speak for that baby than the mom carrying it.

It's not ideal. It's an ethical mess. But, again, it wasn't me that created the system such as it is.

Who is Mayorkas? And why is he/she my buddy? I think you're mistaking me for someone who consumes political news, which I do not. I don't GAF about politics.

In any event, the border isn't closed and hasn't been secure for decades. No president across those decades has done much about it but talk trash and/or throw money, all to no great effect. There are solutions, but politicians aren't interested in actually solving it because it's a wedge issue that is very helpful in elections. Solving it would require politicians to replace it with some other, potentially less effective, wedge issue.

Gene therapy is an insanely broad term that can mean just about anything. The point is the mRNA vaccines do not change DNA or your genes.

I *love* tossing insults around. I generally try to avoid going down that route out in the FB or BB forums. But I enjoy it too much to not at least occasionally respond in kind when someone decides they want to start up with it. It's just so damn much fun - an opportunity for joyful creative expression.

Also, it's impossible to lose such insult-tossing games when one is unmoved by such insults. Hell, when someone manages to pull together a creative insult aimed at me, I'm as likely to give their post a like as not. Because good insults are an art form. And since nobody's insults to me ever trouble me in the slightest, I can always show my appreciation for them when they've put forth some good work despite being the target.

As for the abortion debate, there is no territory that hasn't been covered. It's all been said a thousand times. So there's little point in trying to argue too seriously; might as well have fun with it because nobody is changing anybody's minds.

It's not that simple as you portray in your second paragraph.
I'm not religious, but isn't it really three different person's bodies? The father, the mother, and the fetus/baby? There's the rub.
It's a good thing we don't leave life and death decisions to polling. The "their own body" phrasing is really a poor way to look at it, and opens up multiple other slippery slopes. Most people who answer these polls don't even know what they are answering or the questions are loaded to achieve a desired result. This happens with polling on both sides.

WSJ poll, so take it for the source, but:

"The further into the pregnancy, with AP/NORC finding 61% believe abortion should be legal during the first trimester, but only 34% in the second trimester and 19% in the third, and an April Wall Street Journal poll finding more Americans approve of 15-week abortion bans than disapprove."

There are some interesting breakdowns in polling in the link below:

As you no doubt studied in law school, that is more or less the Roe framework, legal in first, restrictions OK in second, and can be banned in third. Thus why the polling is actually accurate.

The 15 week ban is a canard. First of all, 3 states have done that (KY, FL and AZ). Most states that have changed their laws have banned outright (TX, MO, SD and most of the south) and others 6 weeks (GA, SC, OH).

Not to mention, the AZ AG is in fact trying to enforce an 1800s total ban and FL is considering a special session to outright ban.

The 15 week polling from WSJ and its favored party is just to distract people from the heinous bans in TX, MO and elsewhere that don't even have rape and incest exceptions and their efforts to prosecute people who "aid" or leave the states.

If they wanted to be honest they would tell you only one state is doing 15 weeks in practice. It's a distraction technique.

That would be an exception after 15 weeks. If the babies already dead or it is a risk to the mother life

Right and which states is that in?

Texas, Missouri and most of the south have a total ban.

GA, OH, SC have a 6 week ban.

Arizona has 15 weeks- but their AG is trying to enforce a total ban from the 1800s.

FL has 15 weeks- but is looking to replace it with an outright ban.

The only state actually using 15 weeks is Kentucky.

Meanwhile in TX, doctors are being prevented from treating ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages.

15 weeks is a distraction technique. It's not reality.

False. There is not a single state that outlaws abortions from ectopic pregnancies. Its a lie.

In a letter to the Texas Medical Board — the state agency that regulates the practice of medicine — TMA officials on Wednesday said they have received complaints that hospital administrators and their legal teams are stopping doctors from providing medically appropriate care to patients with some pregnancy complications. They ask the board to “swiftly act to prevent any wrongful intrusion into the practice of medicine.”

You claim it's an exception but the problem is that there is a ton of gray area here where a doctor has to make a quick and life altering decision about whether to abort to save a woman or not. And these rules in red states make it difficult for doctors to do their jobs.

You are absolutely going to see situations where doctors are going to be scared to make a call in a situation where the woman's life might be in danger because they are afraid of running afoul of a state law that could get them prosecuted if they perform an abortion........ but then also open themselves to a lawsuit for wrongful death if they don't and the mother dies.

I read an op-ed from a medical expert who said there will likely be unintend consequences here, one of the biggest being a decline in the quality of OBGYN services in states that have strict(er) abortion laws now. For one, you may see the migration of quality OBGYNs moving out of the state due to the uncertainty of the laws or the fact that medical malpractice insurance could ratchet up even more. Fresh OBGYNs might just opt to continue their medical careers in states that gives them more power to make decisions without the draconian abortion laws hanging over their heads.

It's going to be fascinating to look at OBGYN care 5 years from now in some of these states.

States like Texas are going to be left with Dr Nicks of the world.

The brain drain has already begun.

No doctor worth his or her salt is going to live somewhere where religious fundamentalists can lock them up for saving people's lives.

And no, no one is going to risk their medical license to pay no state income tax. Besides Nevada has no state income tax and abortion rights are in their state constitution, just one example.

Unhinged is a good one. Keep 'em coming.

Gene therapy came up while discussing the whole "my body my choice" comparison. It is an accurate description of the "vaccine",booster, super turbo booster/magic bean syrum being injected into folks right now. I put "vaccine" in quotes because the definition has now become a moving target. A "vaccine" used to give you immunity to a disease for all intents and purposes. Now it just kinda, might, hopefully help your symptoms be somewhat maybe milder. But we really can't quantify how much. And, you young healthy people who are at zero risk from the actual disease could get the bonus heart attack, stroke or paralysis. So that could be fun! Line up the 6 month olds and get them in on it.

All the extremists out there who believe there should be no exceptions at all permitting abortions, like rape for instance, should be raped with a baseball bat and have a basketball inflated in their abdomens for 9 months. Maybe that might get the point across that humans aren't God and don't get to decide what's more important, the quality of life for a mom or the birth of a fetus.

If God isn't okay with abortion, God can deal with it himself in his own way. He doesn't need a bunch of hypocritical humans arrogantly attempting to play God with other people's lives.

Of course Harbaugh has the right to speak his mind, and others have a right to react to his comments. As demonstrated in this thread, some will agree with his views, and others will disagree. Any employment matter is between him and UM, and I doubt UM would take action (unless such conduct was expressly prohibited under his employment contract, which in and of itself would be challenged).

The larger societal problem we now face is a judicially activist Supreme Court. Look no further than John Roberts, who did not join Alito’s opinion overturning Roe because you didn’t need to overturn Roe to decide Dobbs (as Roberts wrote in his separate opinion). Roberts’ incremental approach is one of a conservative jurist. Compare that to Thomas openly calling for cases to be filed challenging gay marriage and contraception. He wrote that in his opinion. That’s activist. That‘s not calling balls and strikes. Nor was overturning Roe. Didn’t need to do so to decide Dobbs.

We also have decisions which have a decidedly religious bent. The Maine case allowing state funds to pay for parochial school education. Or the case of the praying football coach where Gorsuch literally got the facts wrong. Personally, I can see some justification for the Maine decision but fear it will be used to justify other jurisdictions allowing state funds to pay for parochial schools. The case of the football coach, though, was outrageous. When an opinion is justified by assertions clearly not supported by facts, it’s easy for people to question the true motive of the justices. Church (or synagogue, or mosque) and state must be separate to ensure we all have the right to practice any religion (including none at all) that we want. We are not a nation founded upon religion, and most certainly not a Christian nation as some politicians are inclined to say these days.

This Court has substituted its judgement for the cumulative judgement of their predecessors, deciding to do away with precedent when it suits their personal views. And the mother of all cases is yet to come. The Moore case could literally end democratically decided federal elections. Based upon this Court’s rulings to date, we should all be concerned about the outcome.

It's prima facie evidence of the 15 weeks being a right wing media joke.

It's meant to distract the country from the fact that Texas has a full ban with no exceptions and doctors refusing to treat people.

Meanwhile in the past year or two, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia legalized abortion. Texas joins El Salvador and a handful of countries where mothers' life is now second to the fetus and miscarriages result in arrest.

The entire goal of Thomas is end democracy. Look at him deciding his wife's insurrection text case. A municipal court judge in every state would be disbarred in months for that kind of corruption.

And so right about Moore- that's the end goal. End democracy entirely. Once they gut the VRA I can't wait to hear the cries of the righties on this board when Newark and Sussex County are in the same district and the NJ GOP goes extinct.

The Maine case would only apply where the area does not have a local public school alternative. I'd say the judicial activism in that case was the lower court ruling that got it to the Supreme Court. And yes, Thomas can be defined as activist. Just as William O. Douglas and many liberal justices since (RBG?) can also be described as activist.

LOL. When did RBG or any other justice since the New Deal take AWAY a right?

You didn't address any of Frida's extremely salient points.

Let's try phrasing them differently.

1) A Muslim teacher leads a public school class in prayer. Acceptable?

2) A private school receiving state funds teaches that non-Muslims are infidels. Acceptable?

3) Texas doctors are now refusing to treat miscarriages out of fear of prosecution. Acceptable?

4) Guns on the subway. Guns in stadiums. Guns in bars. Acceptable?

That's from the activist clowns just this term. All would be legal.

Now riddle me this one...

A judge in a municipal court in NJ rules his wife's texts can't be admitted into court in a disorderly person case where a friend of his is accused of the conduct. Acceptable?

Oh and just wait. They're not done. Next term, they're going to make it legal for NJ to ignore its bipartisan districting commission so that North Carolina and other states can go full Hungary. Oh and no more VRA- so Camden and rural South Jersey will be packed and cracked and NJ will never again send another Republican to Congress.

Oh and when they're done with that, they're going to let public accommodations discriminate again.

But don't worry. Interracial marriage is totally safe...that I guess is in American tradition, unlike abortion, just ask Ginni err Clarence.

Ironic thread.

Five pages of males deciding for a woman if she should have the freedom to choose what to do with her body and whatever’s inside it or if a woman’s body is community property over which others may choose what she can/cannot do with it.

Everybody has a right to have an opinion except the pregnant woman, it seems.

How about the fetus?

One day that fetus will have a life to live.

A medical bankruptcy he'll need his bootstraps for.

A school shooting for which he'll need a bulletproof backpack.

So many books he can be banned from reading.

And if he's gay he'll get to be discriminated by people with "sincere beliefs."

Or as they'd call it, freedom and the greatest nation on Earth.

This is very true. I do often wish folks would work harder on making their insults fun and entertaining rather than the usual formulaic nonsense. It's so much more fun when it's creative and done with good humor. As opposed to anger.

OTOH, I troll people which prompts their anger, something I really ought to work on curbing given how childish it is of me. Even my kids troll me about my childish trolling tendencies. Makes me proud. 😀

C'mon now. You know better than to get me started on guns. We're pretty much on opposite sides of that argument. Remember, I'm for individual freedom and consistently support our individual freedoms, both for guns and abortion. I'm going after speed limits next 'cause it pisses me off that I can't drive 150mph on the better-paved sections of the NJ Turnpike. 😀

Incidentally, the aforementioned schoolkid *could've* use little kid-sized body armor except that NYS, in it's infinite stupidity, banned body armor after the Buffalo shooting. Because that'll surely prevent someone from getting shot.

Damn. It's too late. I've gotten started...

lol had to rib you a little bit. But maybe if the kid were in WV he'd have a gun to shoot back? :)

But what I do appreciate is your consistency...you want no bans, versus the others who want to ban anything besides guns...who thing it's unfair to say they should be vaxxed to enter a restaurant but would have a raped woman carry a baby...who say they're pro life but want to keep out refugees...or support the death penalty...Christians who seem to struggle with Jesus' words on the poor and disadvantaged...etc

Even I don't agree I can respect people who have a consistent line of thoughts. If the thought is just repeating what they hear on cable TV...then I don't. And you are the former, so I give credit.

You're really not bright. In a discussion that focuses soley on women's rights, you see a tree and no forest. Either smarten up or let the adults talk
you're right that most of this discussion is mainly about women's rights
another part of this discussion is over Jim Harbaugh talking about the abortion issue in a pro live gathering in front of an anti-abortion audience (or ,one can surmise , a crowd wit a margity of people that are against abortion)
In this thread some feel he should shut up (I'm not one of those, even if I disagree with his stance) other praised him for his bravery ( in which I think might be overboard because he was speaking out in front of like minded people that thought about the issue the same way he does).
But I feel in today's society talking about hot issues (pro or con) will receive a backlash from those who don't like to hear an opposite viewpoint, so anyone speaking out about any issue might be considered brave for doing so.

Jim Harbaugh has shown over the years ( as the article I'm posting implies) he's not afraid to speak his mind about issues he feels a need to talk about .

Be outraged or be happy about Jim Harbaugh's anti-abortion stance, he'll keep being Jim Harbaugh

lol had to rib you a little bit.

I am consistent w/this stuff, it's true. And I don't think I'm terribly extremist about it, although some will argue that (with my, largely facetious, basketball comments earlier in the thread being evidence to support their argument, I suppose).

Speaking of ribbing... My kid is actually in WV as we speak. At his GF's family's house down there. While there, he bought himself an M&P Sport II semiautomatic rifle (a so-called AR-15 style weapon), to go with his other weapons. So indeed, he could shoot back.

Of course, this means I now need to go buy several new rifles so as to maintain a lead in the home armament race. Can't have him gaining a lead or I'll wind up stuffed into my chest freezer one of these days.

His GF owns roughly 10 such semiauto rifles. Her mom has roughly the same amount, as do all her siblings (they all live together in NJ most of the year). You just know all this is causing you to grind your teeth a little, don't deny it. 😀

But think about it, would you want to be the criminal home invader who chooses one of their homes to invade? I sure wouldn't.
