The well publicized "top line" efficacy numbers that are being prominently highlighted for each of the vaccines are very overrated in terms of their importance. Much more important - the vaccines ability to ward off severe cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. I read one article earlier this week (couldn't find it quickly now with a quick search) that said that out of the approx. 75,000 trial participants spread across the various vaccine trials, not a single vaccine recipient died of COVID. The attached article says essentially the same thing:

My golf buddy’s MD recently got the 2nd Moderna vaccine and experienced most of the uncomfortable symptoms mentioned, incldg fever, headache and flu like symptoms for a day or two.

He recommended the following remedy for those getting the 2nd Moderna shot:

Take 2 Tylenol before getting the 2nd shot and 1 Aleve after to deal with possible side effects.

Thats the strategy I’m going with.

Or take the Pfizer shot.

You’re telling untruths. From the trials, Pfizer is 52% effective after one dose..Moderna is 80% after one dose. Also, they start seeing a difference between the placebo group and vaccine group 7 days after first shot.
I get being pissed about smokers, but the goal is to keep the hospitals from being overrun, so vaccinating smokers makes sense.

and by the way, what makes 68% (or whatever it is) of vaccines not a good percentage. We will never be 100%. They’re making and getting doses daily, you can’t keep up when more and more people are getting vaccinated every day and more and more vaccines are coming out daily.

#1 is not entirely true. Some sites have Pfizer and others have Moderna. You can make it your business to try to get an appointment at a site that has your desired vaccine. Not sure why you'd want to, but you can.

• Pfizer has a minimum age of 16, Moderna is 18.
• Pfizer has a three week interval between first and second dose, Moderna is four weeks.

I have a hard time accepting smokers getting preference over my 89 year old mom with one lung (not a smoker). She’s still waiting for an appointment. I’m 65 with asthma. Someone who made a life choice to smoke gets preference?

Smokers don't get preference over you and your mom. You are all on an equal footing, as am I.

The current NJ policy is that "high risk" people under age 65 are in the same 1B priority class as 65 and over. Clearly, smokers are high risk. The policy makes no value judgments as to the cause of the risk. Is that fair? Tough call IMO. I could make a case for either side of the argument.

I would add that I preferred the original classification method to the current one.

Originally:

1A was health care workers and emergency responders.
1B was essential workers and people 75 or over.
1C was 65-74, and high risk below 65.
2 was everyone else.

Then in response to a change in CDC guidelines, NJ pretty much flipped 1B and 1C, and merged the 65-74 and 75+ groups. I don't think this was equitable although I personally benefitted from it, having received first dose.

I was the one who raised this question. I didn't say I wanted to choose. All I said was I would prefer to have the Pfizer or Moderna (at 94-95%) vs the J&J at 66%. If my number is called and its the J&J vaccine I'm still taking it.

Do not be dismayed by the J&J stats. The 66% represents clinical trial participants who had NO symptoms. If we are talking about "significant" symptoms (not sure how defined), the level of protection rises to 85%. And if we are talking about protection against death, it's 100% - in the clinical trial at least.

Got second shot at 9:40am yesterday. Went to bed around 1am and I was still symptom free. Woke up at 6 like I got run over. Wife had symptoms of dizziness and lethargy from about 8pm yesterday. She’s also flu like today. It sucks but I’m still out and about driving kids to practices etc. looking forward to a nap though.

Talked to the on-site Doc after our Moderna 2 today at the hospital. He described a possible side effect of being so low energy that brushing your hair is a challenging task. I’m sure that we can all exceed that std.

Yeah, it sucks but I’m sure many are way worse off. I drive to a practice, go home and nap, go to next practice, rinse and repeat.

Based on my age and physical shape, I very well could have had less symptoms just getting COVID. However, I didn’t get the shot because I was afraid of getting sick. I was more afraid of closing my business and I want to be able to travel.
