That you have to look at the whole season to appraise a player, not just one particular game.
Oh - Didn't know we were still on that subject. I thought I was only talking about how our F-ing Met's suck when deGrom is pitching and just how rare it is...
Made even more pronounced now that we have an offense...

I wouldn't be as down on the Mets as you are. I think it's remarkable that the Mets did so well after a terrible first half. If the Mets get a bullpen over the winter, they'll have as good a chance of getting to the playoffs as anyone. And while I realize everyone thinks of the manager as Mickey Moron, he held the team together under awful circumstances, and so made it possible for the Mets to have a good second half.

I'm more disappointed in my Phillies than you should be in your Mets. The Phillies spent money like water last winter, and will have little to show for it. They might even finish fourth the way they did last year. Many Phillies fans thought that the team would take the division, let alone the wild card. But the Phillies completely screwed up their decision not to pursue a quality starter.

To be honest, not down on them at all. Tis year, we found out that we have an amazing core of every day players. For the first time in years, a lot of years, we can put together a lineup that is solid to great from 1-8
We also locked up one of the games great starting pitchers and as much as we go bi polar on our other starters, they are still better than most out there.

This season was also kind of fun.

What I am down on is Manager/GM/Owners

Well, someone assembled those hitters and pitchers. Are you saying that present management had nothing to do with that? I don't follow the Mets carefully enough to know.

Don’t believe BVW had anything to do with Rosario/McNeil/Conforto/Nimmo/Alonso he did bring in Davis(good pickup that even seems to surprise him lol) Ramos...Gets credit for Cano too. But is that a good thing. But the core has nothing to do with the GM.
And the Manager just baffles most of us at times. He has this weird thing about sitting players after a 3-4 hit game...and his handling of the pitching staff just sux.
So- they get Davis/Ramos as their 2 positives...
They also killed any minor league system we have

All fair criticisms. I'd go further; I think Ramos was a mistake. He can hit, but he can't catch his own ***.

Holy cow. Matz just doesn't have the mental aspect of being a starter...? He cannot deal with adversity.

Well it was a fun September.

I still think the offense needs some work. Too much feast or famine and reliance on the long ball. Not enough situational hitting or contact.

I spent 1 year in Denver years ago. . 6 year olds playing T ball would launch them 300 feet. The Rockies score 10 every night. It is a brutal environment for baseball.

This is true all over the majors. It comes from the modern emphasis on home runs. The problem is not confined to the Mets, and it is making baseball much less interesting at least to this elderly fan.

It’s why we all enjoy those rare players like McNeil who play baseball like he is still a kid that likes to get dirty and be in every play.

Mickey Moron again,
Panik is .450 vs pitcher , he bats gulliorme in front of Panik . Nido and pitcher spots , didn’t matter both made outs but Gary was confused on why he had them hit in that order.
Gary isn’t afraid to question/bash Mickey

Eric Hanhold, who was one of eight relievers acquired in the housecleaning of 2017, was DFA'd and claimed by Baltimore.

For anyone interested, here's what's up with the other seven:

Gerson Bautista - To Seattle in Cano/Diaz trade.
Jamie Callahan - Released end of 2018.
Stephen Nogosek - Outstanding in minors, not so much in majors, we'll see.
Jacob Rhame - A checkered career so far, currently on 60 day IL.
Ryder Ryan - Currently at Binghamton in AA, #30 Mets prospect in MLB Pipeline.
Drew Smith - Promising career derailed by TJ surgery, hopes for a 2020 comeback.
Daniel Zamora - Meh LOOGY who will be in decreased demand next year.

The reason I bring all this up is that we are all calling for the Mets to rebuild the bullpen. What the Mets did in 2017 is IMHO how you do it - flood the system with prospects and hope a couple of them work out. But as we see, there are no guarantees.

Does Whitey Herzog have a grandchild managing anywhere? If so let's replace mickey with him and get back to defense, pitching and speed to show these analytic freaks how the game shopuld be played

Defense only matters when balls are put into play. As home runs and strikeouts both increase to historic levels, and fewer balls are put in play, defense is less important.

Pitching has never stopped being important.

Speed is still one of the five basic tools, but it is a complementary tool. You can't steal first base. Not even in Whitey's time.

This sounds alot like:

"Rutgers needs to get back to hard nosed Northeast football. Run the ball up the middle, control the clock, let the defense win the game in the end. None of that fancy Big 12 pass happy gimmick football."

its less important, except when it puts extra people on base for the home runs

In the Atlantic League, a hitter can steal first base on a pitcher that gets away from the catcher. We'll see whether that experiment leads to anything. BTW, there is a countersaying: "Speed never slumps."

Another BTW: I understand Herzog has just had a stroke at age 87. Good that people still remember him. He used to tell Vince Coleman to never hit the ball in the air. Can you picture anyone saying that now to a player?

Back after a vaca in Europe and got to watch game today. More of the same from Mickey and the team. It's great we're technically still in it but Mickey still makes horrible moves and I shudder to think what BVW has baked up this offseason.

You don't have a nice word to say after the Mets rally from a two-run deficit in the 8th and 9th (and on the road!) to win by three?

Readers of this thread know that I have been a Mickey defender, but he had a real head scratcher today:

Top six, bases loaded, two out, down a run, righty reliever on the mound. Rene Rivera is the scheduled hitter. Mickey has a September bench full of pinch hitters, including several lefties, as well as JD Davis and Ramos. But he lets Rivera bat! Did not end well, although the game did.

Cohen and Darling were stumped. They speculated that maybe Mickey was committed to leaving Rivera in the game for as long as Syndergaard was in the game. They agreed that if this was the reason, it was a bad one, but it was the only reason they could come up with.

Bud Black made an even weirder decision in the ninth. Mets had tied the score and have the bases loaded with nobody out. Black correctly brings the infield in to cut off the go ahead run. But they then walk in a run. Now the Mets are up one, bases still loaded, still nobody out. Now they drop the infield back, to play for the double play, and concede the insurance run! Which is exactly what happens.

I don't think I have ever seen a team concede a key insurance run in the top of the ninth.

What made the decision weirder is that Mickey was prepared to pinch hit for Lugo, who was on deck. But once the insurance run was safely in the bank, Mickey correctly let Lugo hit.

So, we all know we are pretty much out of it...why is Frazier getting AB's and Davis sitting on the bench? Nothing against Todd and he actually came back with a solid 2nd half but he is a FA and pretty much 0 chance he is with us next year.

BTW- this is going to be a fun lineup next year...As long as we arent worried about fielding hahaha
But if our normal lineup is healthy, it could have a chance to be our best lineup from top to bottom that we have ever had. This is how I see it
Nimmo 400 OBP 20+ HR
McNeil 310-320 BA 25 HR
Davis 290-300 30 HR
Alonso 270 40+ HR
Conforto 260 35 HR
Cano 270 15 HR
Ramos 285 15 HR
Rosario 285 15 HR 25 SB

And all but Ramos hit a ton of doubles...And if Cespedes comes back and is anywhere near his normal self...

Yes, they’ve resiliented themselves to a .520 winning percentage. Imagine how much more resilient they’d be if they didn’t repeatedly have so many non-resilient days when they lose.
Imagine if they had a manager who knew what he was doing? They're STILL winning despite the bonehead moves Mickey continues to make. I have no doubt that certain players will be on the bench on Game 162 if they need a win to clinch the last Wild Card spot.

Please give it a rest already. This thread has become worse than reading the Ash-bashing that dominates the rest of this board. We all know the deal. No need to keep harping on it. Mickey will be back next year.
