All the bowl games are over. With the exception of the "SEC Championship Game 2.0", the college football season is over.

We still don't have an offensive coordinator.

So...

What's the deal with that?

Will this be a new thread every day or will you update the title in this thread daily?

Tough sell for Ash to get the big name we want. Maybe we can offer an Associate HC job to up the salary.

Why are they dumb azz posts? We haven't heard anything and no one is even talking about it anywhere. I pay $10 a month to get this information. Is it to much to ask?

I'd like to think it will happen in the next week or so but who knows. Mizzou and South Carolina have been sitting around for a bit with openings too. Jedd Fisch had been strongly rumored to Mizzou having visited bowl practices/campus but nothing official on him as of now. So we're not the only school that seems to be in holding pattern although those 2 schools were involved in bowl games. Texas Tech just lost their OC to a HC job in the last few days.

That 10th assistant thing becomes official January 9th so maybe that's the deadline day to finally see some movement.

This morning, white smoke was seen coming out of the area of the Hale Center. It was later determined that it was the air being let out of the practice bubble, which will be symbolic of our reaction when the name is announced.

We are all assuming our next OC will come from either the FBS or NFL ranks. I read an interesting post yesterday in the ongoing OC update thread, and I apologize for not remembering the poster, in which the prediction was that the next OC is the current OC at North Dakota State. He was on the staff with Ash at Iowa State and they are in the FCS championship game this Saturday so there will be no announcement this week. Maybe?

Early signing day is passed. Kids away on break. What is the rush? As long as they get a guy who is a great OC and is healthy.

How unique is RU, I will venture a wild shot opinion that non other school currently looking for an OC, and there are quote a few, have "being healthy" as a crtiteria for the job. But the Fridge and Kill have even set a new narrative for the Knights.

Good catch.
Iowa hired their OC last year after losing to NDSU:

The current OC at NDSU:
http://www.gobison.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1133&path=football
Messingham came to NDSU from Montana State, where he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016. He was the offensive and special teams quality control coach at Indiana in 2014 and 2015 after spending five seasons at Iowa State from 2009-2013 coaching tight ends (2009-2010), wide receivers (2011) and two years as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach (2012-2013).

Here's the post you refer to (interesting one from a brand new poster):

Iowa hired the NDSU OC as their OL coach. For a second I was wondering because I thought Ferentz's son was the OC there.

There are other schools looking for an OC. I mentioned above Mizzou and South Carolina are as well and they've had the openings for a bit too. Texas Tech has recently joined the OC search fray as well as they lost their OC to HC job at Incarnate Word. Kinda wonder if Graham Harrell might get the nod there. I was looking at him as possible co-OC but I doubt that will happen.

You cannot be stumped. I should have been more precise.
Haha, I'm joe nobody. I can easily be stumped, I just read around because this for me is like recruiting is for most others. Anybody can be just as informed if they're so inclined. I actually see more of that lately and I like it because it gives me information too.

Back to the poster who posted about Messingham. The post is intriguing, but then in another thread, he throws this name out there:

"Joe Osovet".

There's a name I bet you don't know. If he winds up being the OC, wonder what the reaction will be.

Courtney Messingham - if you are making guesses, yeah he might fulfill some of the criteria - but of all of the possibilities out there he just does not really jump out as a prime "gotta have him" prospect -
Last February - Just one day after North Dakota State announced the departure of three-year offensive coordinator Tim Polasek, head coach Chris Klieman made the decision to hire his old teammate at Northern Iowa and former Montana State offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham.

Past Coaching Stops:

  • 2017-Present – NDSU, Offensive Coordinator
  • 2016 – Montana State, Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach
  • 2014-15 – Indiana University, Offensive and Special Teams Quality Control
  • 2009-13 – Iowa State, Tight Ends/Wide Receivers/Offensive Coordinator
  • 1999-2002, ‘08 – Missouri State, Position Coach
  • 2005-07 – Southern Mississippi, Running Backs/Wide Receivers
  • 2003-04 – Upper Iowa, Head Coach
  • 1995-98 – Truman State
  • 1993-94 – Iowa Lakes CC
  • 1990-92 – St. Ambrose, Graduate Assistant
Certainly the real substance of his work must be understood - but - no insult intended - this just is not a scintillating resume of an offensive genius

but who knows - even supposed experts can make seriously poor judgments

- recall the famous evaluation of Fred Astaire’s screen test: “Can’t act, can’t sing, can dance a little.”

I didn't know Messingham either I just looked him up when it was mentioned. I was looking at some of the HCs and OCs of the top offenses on the FCS level though and I didn't really see someone who might fit when I look at some of their career trajectories and where they've coached. Messingham could actually fit because he's worked with Herman and Wilson, not sure how good he'd be though. NDSU was ranked #8.

Link to the rankings in the FCS.

http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fcs/current/team/21

Also as an aside Gary Andersen was hired as 10th assistant at Utah. He'll be a defensive assistant and AHC. He was in line to be a G5 DC but backed out when this offer came around. The news itself is inconsequential to us but just to give a feel about what kind of coaching movement is happening and if movement related to the 10th assistant will happen before the Jan 9 date.

Maybe you have a point there. The various premier programs will be hiring another coach, effectively setting the standard in terms of $$$ available for coach #10, plus taking their pick of the available talent. Gotta figure coaches with agents will probably wait to see how much to ratchet up their asking price and whether to jump on various offers based on salary, responsibility, etc. Although I figure most of the bigger programs already have coach #10 lined up, so it's quite possible that we'll have to wait on schools like Mizzou, USCe, & Texas Tech to make their choice and set the bidding floor. I seriously worry that Ash will not have the budget available to make the hires necessary to get us to the next level.

You bring up some good points. There are a lot of new HCs this year still trying to fill out their staffs. This may take a little while.

Don't see this as a situation where Ash is spending much time wooing any prospects that are shopping around & kicking tires on 10th assistant spots -
as long as Hobbs has given backing for a reasonably competitive comp package - then Ash is looking for somebody willing to go on a mission - and somebody that totally sees the merits & potential that would come from "getting it done" as the OC at Rutgers - a B1G program that needs a major offensive design & build.

I hope that's the way they are thinking.
IIRC, the season ticket sales were down last year.
If they want to spark some excitement, a home run (or even a ground rule double) hire is in order. Every additional $100,000 they spend will be made up for by every 250 season tickets sold (average cost with seat donation of $400).

A hire like Canada, Mazzone or Longo could easily generate another 1,000 season tickets sold?

I am starting to think that RU's perceived lack of talent may be making any attempts at the bigger rumored names unlikely to succeed. However, the RU OC job does seem like almost a no lose proposition at this point. The statistics from the last 2 years are so bad that even limited improvement would look good, significant improvement would make the new OC look like a genius, and a lack of success would be blamed more on the program at this point (after 9 in 9 with little success) than the OC himself.

If they are not looking to put real muscle into this selection - then the situation is profoundly grim.

Hobbs understands that when it comes to building & coaching a team - you need good tools to do good work - you need good musicians to make good music - this is a position where coaching & strategy " vision & talent" is an essential ingredient of success
and he knows this is not like hiring a new gym teacher - this is not a case of finding a congenial & articulate football guy & sending him off to work the job in accordance with a Offensive Coordinator course syllabus.

NJ HS HC’s want to see:
-a guy with previous success at the D1 OC level. You only had to meet DM a couple of times to know he was in over his head.
-a guy that will stay at least 3 years so their kids will at least make it to upperclassmen in the same system. The revolving door at OC is literally a joke. The Kill hire was a calculated risk. He wasn’t going to HC anywhere. He was going to run a do no harm offense until Ash got past the empty cupboard of 2014-16 recruiting. Now get someone who will likely sign on for the long haul.

I'd like 2, 3 more would be nice but I'd like at least two. I think that's about what's needed to get the ball rolling. I've mentioned this before but continuity doesn't necessarily have to be embodied in one person, it's the philosophy and general system that needs to be maintained. It's one of the reasons I like guys from the Leach or Briles trees because that thread is a good one you can pull from if/when coaches leave. Again I'll mention Stoops at OU. He had Leach for a year and like 7 OCs in his 18 year tenure and many came up from within their co-OC setups inside the staff for from the Leach tree like Riley.

You don't necessarily need the same guy but you need that first guy to get the ball rolling right and if you've chosen a good thread there's a good chance to keep on pulling on it in the future when needed. Plus you'll also be "raising" guys from within the staff.

Another side note, forgot Illinois is also in the market for an OC but I've read things like Lovie's more interested in a pro style so it might not conflict with what we're looking for hopefully assuming we're going spread. Footballscoop mentioning he's looking at what might play out with some NFL guys and it could be a few days.
