Edit: First half scores vs. OSU, followed by final scores...

2014: 35-7, 56-17
2015: 21-0, 49-7
2016: 30-0, 58-0

Objectively speaking, i.e., by the scores, we haven't really improved. Just looks like our defense might be a little better and our offense a little worse. We need a friggin' QB in the worst way. Will be very annoyed if we see CL in the 2nd half. Game's over, let's start playing for the future.

Without looking at the scores..and watching the actual play, our team is VASTLY improved, minus the passing game.

They are just a lot better than us. Can’t do anything about that now except recruit better players. I think we are doing the best that we can especially with tackling. I am not pleased with the score but I am hopeful for the future.

I think our fanbase came into the Big 10 expecting to compete with the top programs in the league when we are decades away from that...strive to be Iowa on our best seasons but the reality is we will usually be Purdue..can our fans deal with that..im not sure

I don't know those Schiano teams would have us in the middle of the pack of the Big Ten.

I think Ash gets us there.

The defense is better mostly because coaching. The offense is worse mostly because of talent. A few years with better talent and we're a good team.

The inadequacy of applying an overly simplistic metric.

This team is vastly improved from last year.

They are well-coached, for certain.

Our talent is what it is, at this point. We're a handful of 4* guys from being competitive.
Agrees. A few playmakers and we are a team with a winning record. If this team has Carroo we beat Iowa.

As I said, I think our defense looks a bit better, but not hugely better and our offense looks a bit worse, so overall better, but at the end of the day against a very good team, like OSU, it makes no difference. Gap is just too wide. Let's hope Ash can close the talent gap. Agree the team is better coached, but that wasn't the point of my post.

Dont go crazy on well coached. 12 man on field. Illegal formation on punt. Awful timeout to allow OSU to score. Ash has to spend $$$ on experienced assistants.

Purdue is a stretch. I think Schiano would have had RU similar to Minnesota. Couple 7-5 seasons with a few stinkers here or there. RU's first season in the BIG was better than anything Purdue's done in the past 15 years.

By all objective measures back in those years, the BE was very close to being the equal of the B1G on the field, so I'm confident we'd have been quite competitive with those Schiano teams in the B1G. I think the B1G has gotten better, overall, in the past 3-4 years and we've gotten worse, so we look bad.

The TO didn't allow them to score. It was 4th and 1 and OSU rushed to the line to call the play. They would've picked up the first and clock stops anyway so at most it cost RU 3-4 second. Conversely, CL having no game awareness throws the ball away rather than sliding and forcing OSU to call a TO was an issue. That saved them 15-20 seconds

Holy **** Mr. Simpleton, if you can't see that this team is improved then you don't know football. Maybe if we had a QB who could throw the ball and a couple of WR's who could catch it the game would be a little different. The next throw that Laviano attempts down the field other than a go route will be his first. If we had gotten 3 or 4 more first downs you could probably remove at least 14 points off the board.

All of you J/O's who supported Flood are getting what you deserve. The cavalry is coming in the next 2 years with recruiting.

I guess you haven't been around the boards for long and you have an obvious inability to read and comprehend, but otherwise, solid post. I was never a Flood fan, calling for his head after year 2 and in this thread I've clearly said we've made some improvement, but by one objective measure - the score against OSU at the half (admittedly, not a statistically great sample size) - we haven't improved. The score point, as lightly relevant as it may be, is inarguable.

What did the OP post that was wrong? Objectively, there's no improvement by way of scores. Subjectively, we can see all the improvements, except on offense.

Quite the opposite. Know takent is lacking so why so frustrated when we give away time and plays to OSU. Think D played well in spurts. Offense not so much. Dont understand use of Laviano. 12 men on field and illegal formation are coaching issues. Want to see better.

This team is bad, but there is point in getting all worked up yet. Let's see how we do vs Illinois, Minny, IU, MD and PSU. If we can go 3-2 in those games, I'll view it as progress.

7-6, 6-7, 3-9, 4-8, 5-7...those are the type of seasons that Purdue has..thats what RU will have and occasional jump up to some 9-4 seasons...realism

GS had one good year and lots of 7-5/8-4 seasons and those teams who couldnt be WVU wouldnt all of a sudden be competitive with OSU. BE didnt have historic programs like the Big 10 did, beating South Florida means very very little.True GS would have done better around 500 right now because he built the program up...Ash inherited poor recruiting classes from Flood so thats why we are a 4-8 program right now

Keep in mind this is a much, much better ohio state offense than last year, when their offense was almost as anemic as ours is this year.

There are folks thinking this is a recruiting fixes the problem and it's not.....the concepts on offense and personnel playing or lack of creativity is beyond recruiting or lack of talent.....The thought that an incoming recruit next year will have the career or productivity of a Janarion Grant, Robert Martin or others is bizarre to even approach that as the problem. We have talent, it's poorly coached and utilized.

We have a concept or coaching problem at OC and until that is repaired or replaced, recruiting won't matter one bit.....Penn State recruits at a much better clip across the board from RU and they have no idea what they are doing either with the best back in the conference with Saquon Barkley........at some point, we have to acknowledge or it would be foolish to think what we are watching is somehow OK or that recruiting or a different QB playing fixes everything.

RU has to do something on offense different.....a poor offensive team like Northwestern has 24 points at Iowa halfway through the 3rd quarter and we scored 7 vs Iowa....it's not talent folks, even most 1-AA or FBS teams can manage a few first downs and points.

Our Defense is better but still young behind the line...you lose Greg Jones ... Naji Clayton deserts the team because of personal issues or ???...Hey Naji...you would have been playing a lot...You can't keep the D out there series after series with no drives ...You have no QB and that with the loss of Grant surely doesn't help ....Reality is OSU is a great team made up of 4-5 star players and the youngest team in college football...hats off to Meyer ....

The OP is 100% correct, and the people arguing with him look pretty foolish since Rutgers is trailing by more than FIFTY in the 3rd quarter of a conference game.

Sorry, until you get a QB who fits this system in here and some skill players to make plays, trying to judge the OC is useless. Patton, Tsimis, Agudosi etc aren't scaring anyone. Harris is the only weapon out wide right now that fits this system. Patton had his hands on 2 balls today that a senior with his experience should be making. You ultimately might be right, but I have no idea how you can make that call right now.

This team is vastly improved from last year.

Our talent is what it is, at this point. We're a handful of 4* guys from being competitive.

Of course it's an overly simplistic metric. I assumed everyone knew I knew that, but maybe not.

"Vastly improved?" Seriously? Modest improvement, at best, in a couple of units (OL/DL/DBs). I do think we're better coached though, with regard to preparation and conditioning, although that's not showing much today. However, the gameday coaching with regard to TOs, clock usage and having the right calls, is marginally better (much better on penalties though).

I agree that we're not far from being competitive with all but the top 10 teams, but that has to include a much better QB and it's not clear we have that yet.
