Never Been Contacted by a Coach Regarding Grades

I've never been contacted by a coach regarding a grade. Academic support staff...yes on occasion. As a prof. I do not have a problem being contacted by academic support to make an inquiry as to how a student is doing. Don't mind being asked if a grade could be improved or not. It would not make me happy to be contacted by a coach (particularly the head coach) - given their perceived power/celebrity - it could be seen as using undue influence. Also, faculty are not part of the program at Penn State or anywhere else. Not a good turn of phrase by Flood. Although I don't love him as our coach, I think a reprimand is in order, not a firing.

So basically the problem here is that Flood didnt inquire through a less imposing underling? THat more or less spells out how stupid this is. Basically, its the appearance of impropriety, not any actual impropriety.

ImBad, why doesn't the coach talk to the player and the player talk to the professor? Why even involve academic support staff? I'm confused as to how this all happened.

Shouldn't you take your Pedd State information to their board?

Maybe Flood did talk to Barnwell and Barnwell was too irrepsonsible, or shy or lazy or immature or whatever to actually go through with it. Maybe Barnwell had talked to the prof and gotten no response and Flood was stepping in.

Whats it matter. Non-issue like so many others than people on this board freak about on a regular basis.

I think this would be the most mature way to go about it, particularly for an upper classman, like Barnwell. Having worked with student athletes for many years, I can tell you that their lives are not easy. They have much less time to study than other students, they are exhausted half the time due to the physical exertion and pounding they take. Academic support, done correctly, is something I do not begrudge student athletes in the least.

Agree that this is more appearance of impropriety, but I do not think a coach should contact faculty. I think they should go through the proper channels, and ideally he should have told Barnwell to talk to the professor himself.

Derleider, don't tell me what I can or cannot ask. Ok? It is not a non-issue and I'm not freaking. If Barnwell does what any other college student does, Flood has no involvement. Understand?

I think its a fair observation but this is a minor violation if any. That is unless the email is damning. Nothing to see here until the email comes out...

Coaches shouldn't contact professors. If fact, they shouldn't even care about school or their players. Let's go back to the day of illiterate kids that get thrown to the curb once they are no longer useful.
Ummm...R U responding to what I said? I didn't say they shouldn't care about school. They should care a lot. They should not go to faculty members directly in my opinion. Flood is learning a lesson and that is a good thing.

Is it against Penn St's rules for a coach to contact one of his players Professors about the possibility of that player earning extra credits, or are you just stating how you feel it should be.

I don't know whether there is a policy or not at Penn State. My opinion only.

That is what I'm afraid of, if in fact such rule exists.

do you give PSU football player advantages over other students?
Absolutely not. I never gave any student preferential treatment. Kids have lost eligibility based on a grade in a course I have taught. If a student comes to class, does work, demonstrates that they are trying, comes to office hours, does extra credit when offered, I would give the student the opportunity to do an assignment to improve a grade - if they asked and if they were on the borderline of the next highest grade. Any student would get that treatment.

Going bad for me? How so? If this descends into stupidity it won't be of my doing. In fact, I think this is a perfectly good thread with some good give and take. Not sure why you don't like it.

Simple. Penn State isn't where we're setting the bar. It shouldn't even be part of the conversation. Because child molesters. And also Vicky Triponey.

It's always better to get an official answer rather than relying on the feedback received from someone who has a personal stake in the matter. Even if Barnwell was being completely honest, I'm sure he would be holding out hope until the very end and may have been overly optimistic. For all we know, the professor may not have even complained. Perhaps the profession mentioned the email in passing and someone with an ax to grind filed the complaint.

I agree with everything here. If a coach sent me an email asking if there was anything a student could do to get a better grade I'd forward it to my department chair. It's just not cricket. No not the worst thing ever but poor judgment at least.

I think you are missing the point that there is a process in place and he may not have followed protocol so it could be a issue. I think this is a whole non story though and completely blown out of proportion.

I think if the email contained anything terrible - they would have pulled the trigger and found a replacement. Seems like an administrative or procedural issue rather than some kind of UNC type of issue.

Its obvious to the point of not needing to said. I mean whats next, if Barnwell never enrolled here Flood wouldnt have done this either.

I have taken undergrad and grad courses at a few different Universities during the past 20 plus years and some as recently as 4 years ago. (Never less than an A- in any of the courses)On occasion I have needed to request an exception or have a professor make a change and the overwhelming majority were very easy to work with but some were absolute jackasses and many times the administration was even worse. I know typically students can be much worse but in my case I was exceptionally nice and respectful and sometimes it just didn't matter. Maybe Flood stepped in to get an appropriate answer one way or another from a non-responsive Prof., instead of just going above his/her head for being a jerk to one of his guys.

According to the SL article, whether what Flood did was an NCAA violation or not, Rutgers has a rule that head coaches can't contact professors.

That is what I'm afraid of, if in fact such rule exists.

Here is the problem. The NCAA has specific rules and they have Lack of Institutional Control rule. One part of LOC is that athletic department members most follow all institutional athletic department policies. If they fail to follow them it is an NCAA violation. So if Rutgers policy is a coach may not contact a professor directly then it would be an NCAA violation for the coach to contact directly.

As far as the NCAA it not a big deal to the institution, however the impact to Flood could be bad. By that I mean Rutgers will not lose scholarships or post season ban. However for Flood he could face a show cause penalty which gives the university no choice but to terminate him. The violation is black and white (If contacting a professor directly is against RU rules). The severity is a whole lot of grey. Does the investigation committee feel like it was an attempt to get an improper benefit? I think it looks bad that it from his personal email because to many that would show an intent to conceal. No one right knows. He may just need to take learning course and probation or he could face suspension.

Funny thing about the North Carolina issue.....everyone seemed to forget about it immediately because they are in bed with ESPN. UNC was creating fake classes for athletes to make grades, RU's coach asks how a player is doing in class. How is that worse than UNC? Is Roy Williams fired? They gave UNC fake punishments which were minor as if nothing happened.

Why is this even being discussed?

Does anyone else see the irony of a person calling himself PSU_Nut explaining how the Rutgers' football coach is making a mistake.

Irony, do they teach it at Pedd State?
