I would prepare for it to be considered income. The government doesn't do anything for you without taking something away.

I don't need the check moreso than I need people taken care of who are going to be on vents for 2 weeks at a time. Imagine the bills about to drop on people.

The retirees won't be able to afford it. They're the group that's overwhelmingly admitted to the ICUs.

Wonder if this will push some hospitals to declare bankruptcy since most won't be able to pay the corona bill and their main money maker (elective surgery) has been cancelled.

So they will tax you on the money that they are giving you back from your taxes they already collected? Makes sense.

Nobody outside of the affluent will be able to afford it. Even if you're insured, the bill will still be astronomical.

Everyone doesn't pay taxes?
“Everyone” isn’t receiving one. I don’t know the thresholds they settled on. They were going back and forth between $60k and $75k for individuals and $120k and $150k for joint filers. Plus $500 per kid with some cap. I don’t know where they ended up.

What I saw this morning:
Anyone over 75k individual, 150k joint is expected to pay back over 3 years, 0 interest
$7,500 cap per family

I don't get this means testing ******** but when you have a Congress loaded with people too afraid to spend or absolutely against any spending, this is the kind of stuff we get stuck with. Like I said before, I couldn't care less about this money and would rather funds cover people's ICU costs.

The bill is loaded with pork. Kennedy Center in DC is getting $35M.. very essential you know. The political class has to have ways to be entertained.

So they they’re really just giving people an interest free loan? What about people who don’t pay it back?

Treasury offset most likely. Wage garnishment, tax return forfeiture, cutting benefits..

90% of America is getting a somewhat free check (I’m sure it will get taxed). The republicans turned into socialists & Dems suddenly became fiscally conservative.

Well played Corona. Well played.
Neoliberals got so outflanked that I can't help but laugh as a proud socialist scumbag that they let themselves lose again.

The centrists are walking to their own firing squad this November and I'm cheering them on at this point as they've been as bad as this board has been toward my ilk.

In the meantime, I understand the state will NOT extend the filing deadline as the Feds are doing. Thanks Governor (insert coalcounty description here).

Probably will get deducted next tax time and you'll have no way to stop the payback after Year 3.

If this thing goes on for months, are we going to keep having these bills come up and "wE gOtTa MeAnS tEsT iT, gUyS!"? It's Universal Basic Income, America Edition.

I'm just glad they stopped bickering and got a deal done. I won't see a dime, but a major stimulus is needed right now.

One of only 6 states not to have done so thus far. That's incredible. Surely that will change in the next few days. What about the tsunami!?!?

If you are old, you have to get a job and pay it back. If you are 20 something, you can ignore paying it back and all will be forgiven.

The bill is a little confusing, 1,000 pages long but the stimulus checks are not loans however it looks like they will be taxed. Businesses are also eligible for loans which are interest free.

There is a line in the bill to increase the House of Reps salaries and 'expenses' by $25M. Nice 50k raise for each member.
I couldn't find either of those appropriations in there, but I didn't get through all 1404 pages, mostly just the table of contents and the first few hundred pages. Maybe you guys can find that and point it out. Otherwise it's probably more partisan bs.

I don't consider it a stimulus because it can't be spent to its full potential. I think it's more a stopgap.

It needed to be essentially a boosted unemployment benefit to all and cover this situation for the next 2 months (I'm probably wishful thinking this is over by June). The $1,500 or whatever one time payment we'll get isn't going to do much for most people.

Cool. So $1,500 is more like $1,200.

I agree. People out of work will use it to pay bills. Mortgage, power bill etc. Little will get put back into the economy.

I’m single and make over the thresh hold for a person filing single and I’m fine with that. What they did do for people like myself who work through a union hall and have been laid off bc of the outbreak, is extend our unemployment benefits 13 weeks on top
Of the normal 26 weeks available to us yearly. Also they are allocating $600 additional a week for four months to compensate the eligible workers who are out of work. In NJ the weekly full rate of UI is $713. Basically I will get 2/3rds of my weekly take home until this is over. My medical insurance is also safe for 22 months from the last day I worked so I gladly won’t worry about the one time payment from the govt. I’m sure someone needs it more then I do and hope it helps someone and their family.

middle class is gonna get screwed on these checks again and will have to pay them back. The government has no idea what a high income person is. A couple in NYC that is filing joint making $151K a year is not middle class as these people should get the checks. It is expensive there, CA, CT and many other states. It does matter if a republican or democrat is in office, middle class gets screwed and we have to survive this stuff and get nothing from government. tighten up the belt boys before they bend you over.. Sorry for the political rant and I will ban myself for a few days.
