Aren't they all. I don't recall many if any saying, nah, don't take that guy. Its like, oh heck yea, a great get. Then two years later, he really needs to go and was a reach to recruit him.
Agree with your post in general, but in his specific case, I recall a fair amount of pushback on this board. Both from the injury standpoint, but also the "backup to the backup" comments.

Wow, the Kool Aid in that thread was astonishing. All those hopeful posts preceded one of the worst Nebraska football seasons in one hundred and thirty one years of Old Gold Knight/Antelope/Bugeater/Cornhusker football.

I always page through those historic threads on pins and needles waiting to see what I posted. My only post in that thread was to bag on the usage of the swing pass as far as coaching it, blocking it, and the QB making the right throw. Which, our 3-9 season last year was due in large part to coaching, blocking, and QB play (and the kicking game).

The definition of insanity is repeating the same behavior and expecting better results. We have the same head coach, an unproven offensive line minus our center, and Frost and Whipple will hand the keys to a guy with a bad thumb and won't give the next man up (Smothers) a chance no matter how badly Casey does. Whipple would, but Frost will override it due to his background as the beleaguered quarterback.

This season will be bad. No one here wants it to be, me included. But we don't have a mature, engaged, adaptable, P5 head coach. Until we do, Nebraska will continue to be irrelevant.

I don’t think Smothers will be the backup to Thompson. I think it will be Purdy.

We were kind of scrambling for a big back and he was experienced. He was probably worth the risk when we took him.
This is exactly the problem. Risk. Was he worth the risk? Sure, OK. But we've taken on too many kids in that category. The results on the field and number of busts speaks for itself.

I was skeptical. He was clearly on a downward trajectory because of his injury history. That's unfortunate.

We were all blinded by 'USC'. This kid was practically Lendale White, amirite?

So unless we were hoping for 3-4 meager carries a game, it did not work out and it was unlikely to.

No harm done taking a chance so no fail
Exactly, most reclamation projects fail but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t “worth the risk.” We had a thin RB room and needed to add a portal back. He was deemed best available. Didn’t pan out and tear later he is gone, RB room looking stronger this year.
