If they were really close in terms of running the offense, which I believe they were, I would have named Gebbia the starter in a second. A young kid like Martinez, that has only been on campus for 8 months, is going to be a lot more accepting as the backup than a player that was here well before the younger player showed up. You name Gebbia the starter, secure his services for another year, and then go about getting new blood in the door.

Close. You name Gebbia the starter. If he screws-up, he goes to the bench. Martinez is in and Gebbia is the back-up.

The way it panned-out, Martinez is #1, and Gebbia is history.

Some RSS posters and others have talked about roster management, and so I question the move, but I have faith Frost knows who the right guy is in the long-run. And I back that guy 100%. GBR

Do you really think the coaches didn't know they would risk losing Gebbia if they named the new kid the starter??

They could have gone the safe route of naming Gebbia the starter, because Martinez isn't going to leave when he's been on campus for a semester. Or he would be much less likely to leave after a semester than Gebbia would be, after being overtaken by a younger player.

I'm of the mind that they are perfectly fine with Bunch taking snaps as the backup. They would have liked to have Gebbia, but they are comfortable with Bunch. And...if Bunch were that far behind the top 2, wouldn't they have been a lot more nervous about losing Gebbia? The coaches knew what they were doing.

That post makes good sense. Damn good chance they know what they're doing.

I think those are pretty much identical. You do what you can to hold onto Gebbia another year, and let them battle it out. May the best man win. But I'm not sure Frost thinks like that. Is he truly as pure and honest as we would like to believe?

It was probably an unnecessary risk, but I think Frost is just being a straight shooter, and wants to do what is best for the player too. At least I hope that is the reason behind his choice. It's pretty refreshing actually.

Yup. Frost has his principles. Best guy starts, period. There is no BS.

Let's not make it sound like TG transferring out was part of their plan. The world isn't going to end without him, but it hurts the depth.

We put a lot of shine on Fyfe's name until we saw him start and then that bucket of cold water felt pretty bad on cold November days. God forbid Martinez blows a knee and then bunch tweaks an ankle, it's gonna be a loooooooooooooooong year.

Just the same as it would be at any other program that lost their top 2 QBs. It would be nice to be 3 deep. But remember who came off the bench when Braxton Miller got injured for Ohio State?

They're still doing repair work on Memorial Stadium for when Bauserman got the ball in his hands. We should have billed them for compromising the strength and integrity of our stadium. Ohio State, with access to one of the top depots of talent in the nation, had Joe Bauserman as their #2 guy. Yikes! Now there's a sobering thought.

Just remember Matt Masker broke Scott Frost's high school records. We'll be in good hands, the Christianity in me believes this!

BTW Joe Ganz was a fine QB. The coaching staff just played favorites with Keller. Joe had a good arm and fast legs. Didn't he put the hurt on KU at home and was told to shut it down?

Bringing God into the equation is a bad idea. Separation of Church and Football. GBR

Who is UCF's backup QB now that Vedral bailed on them? Doesn't that make him the same as Gebbia? Or is the real butt hurt over the timing? What about the back up safety there now that Neal is starting here after he left UCF?
Well I would say apples and oranges on this one.

No. Because they left to follow their coach right away.....the apples. The oranges is leaving one week before first game after not being announced the starter. I just can't compare the two situations as the same, sorry.

They both left, as I said in the first message. You are butt hurt about the timing.

That is why I brought up Neal. When he found out he was going to be a backup, hE quickly put together his plan to graduate in the summer so he could leave UCF. He was a top returner in 2018 and would have been counted on to play for the Knights. They had no time to find a replacement back up. Same thing.

Although you may not choose to believe it, until Gebbia picked up his game, Bunch was outplaying Gebbia and early in fall practice was ahead of him. Bunch is decent.
Yeah, I chose not to believe it.

Im not butt hurt about anything. Just didnt agree with your comparison. Guess that makes me butt hurt. Sorry for having a different opinion. Who was going to beat out Neal?

I don’t know Scott Frost said when he came to Nebraska that he was probably going to be a back up at UCF. Sounds very similar to Gebbia.

Shhhh.. You were supposed to keep that on the down low. Huskersalts slept on a ledge on the 39th floor last night. We want him to take the elevator to the lobby, not the alternative route.

So your going to low blow me because Gebbia choose to move on?? All I ever did was be a fan of Husker QB. He gave it his all, didn’t work out and now he’s moving on. This is all I will say on the Gebbia subject. I won’t knock the kid and I won’t say another word for him.

Now I’m glad we got a great QB in Martinez. We also have a great dual threat in Luke McCaffery coming in and we also have Smothers coming on up in a few years. Our QB position is in great shape.

There is no spin necessary. We haven't done anything wrong and weren't outcompeted. Our team was in the bottom 10% last year...maybe the weakest 4-8 team in power 5 conference history, we had pretty garbage qbs, we hired the best coach available since urban meyer, he overturned the system and our leftover qbs had to make a decision. The one left over had the body of a HS freshman, and no game experience, combined with average mobility. The Qb leaving was beaten out by a true freshman who hasn't played in competitive action since his junior year...we didn't lose Scott Frost, or Brook Berringer....there is absolutely zero chance that Tristan Gebbia becomes a top qb in college, but there is a high probability that in 4 years NU will have an all-conference qb, no matter what happens this year.

Now wait a minute. You said that's why Neal transferred here and I quote (tuco)"When he found out he was going to be a backup, hE quickly put together his plan to graduate in the summer so he could leave UCF". Are you backing away from your statement?

Edit: just saw the link that xxUNRIVAlEDxx put up. Explains where you must have gotten that. I see your ammo.

Zero chance huh? Put the crack pipe down. Frost screwed up on this one, (he’s human). Needed to make Gebbia the starter and play Martinez more and more as the season goes on. then tell Gebbia after the season, that he’s going with Martinez from here on out. Gives the staff a whole season for a backup plan!

You don't think Gebbia had this figured out? yeesh! Gebbia had to know his only chance was to win the job this year as Martinez was the heir apparent.

Pray that Martinez stays healthy.
And Martinez clicks in game situations remember he hasn't played since 2016, it actually a scary situation with gebbia leaving I'm not on the bunch bandwagon simple because no power 5 conference teams recruited him. How many of you are on his bandwagon but also insist we sign all 4&5 star kids? You can't have it both ways and from what I understand and maybe I'm wrong but coach frost didn't tell gebbia it got all messed up if that's true I don't blame the kid for walking herd it from a second or third party kinda tells the kid he's not that important after all. Again maybe I'm wrong I'm that assumption

Well, if Coach V told AM, he should have told TG. He's the position coach. I have no clue what happened, but just getting beat out for the starting job, I would like to think in the same position, I would not have walked.

Does Bunch go on scholarship? (apologize if this has been discussed earlier)
He is the 2nd team QB

we put Mazour and Weinmaster on scholarship - both are juniors - and don't appear on the 2 deep as yet

Well, he may play and he may earn one next year some time but right now we don't have one available. At the point the others were handed out it didn't appear that Bunch would be playing. Waiting to name the starter until after classes started cost a kid a scholarship for a year basically. May not even have been Bunch. Unfortunate timing.

I suspect this will derail things and maybe they will see significant time during the year - I hope mazour and weinmaster make some significant contributions this year otherwise I question the rationale of putting 2 walk-on JUNIORS on scholarship.

Well congrats for Bunch, Gebbia leaving does give Bunch a chance at actually game play this year. Bunch at bare minimum, will be a solid back up for us. He’s not better then Martinez or Gebbia but he’s good enough to give us depth until Noah becomes eligible and McCaffery gets here.

I thought Bunch looked better than Vedral in the Spring game.

That’s actually a good point BUT it was merely a spring game. Just one practice, but nothing taking away from Bunch...maybe he’s the better QB of the two (Bunch vs Vedral).

Best of luck to Gebbia. I'm still 100% for AM as #1. SF knows what he's doing--and he has a lot of good help making these kinds of decisions. It will either work out OK or it won't. Can't stand pat.
