Can Miles afford this?
I don't claim to know enough about the man in question, but if you're a 6'6 guard playing against Nebraska highschool competition, averaging 15 points is not all that special.
That will translate into about 3 ppg in college.
Maybe he can develop further.
Athletic - yes but I believe the coaches thought he'd be much taller by now when he initially committed like in the 6-6 6-7 range. Offensive skill set needs improvement and Aguek realizes that. But let's be honest would you go to a prep school and reclassify because NEBRASKA BASKETBALL want you to? We move on and kid will be successful at a lower D1 school.

This whole story is strange. Chubbick is clearly pissed. I suspect we do not know the whole story here. Best to withhold judgement until we do.Odd to read Chubbick's quote of "Either I'm full of $@%# or they are...". That's not something you hear a high school coach say very often of the school their star player is (was) committed to.
Seems to me they (Miles) are trying to free up a scholarship for an extra year by asking him to go to prep school. Obviously Chubbick doesn't agree with that request. No good for the hoops program to piss off the best HS program for D1 bball talent in the state...

Basketball is 100% different from Football when it comes to needing local players. When was the last time Iowa State had a starter from the state of Iowa?
Miles needs to get kids on campus that can win Big 10 ball games, not local kids.
True, but it's never good to piss off local high school coaches, especially a legend like Chubick whose son played here. That could come back to bite you in the butt if/when a legit Big 10 player from Omaha comes along in the future.
And FWIW, Teddy Allen from Boys Town might a legit Big Ten player. Iowa State and West Virginia have offered him, as have schools like Cincinnati and Virginia Tech. If he's good enough to play for Huggins and Buzz Williams, you'd think he'd be good enough to play here. But no offer from Coach Miles.

This thread is awesome.
Two years from now, Miles is 14-16. Nobody here will give coach a break because Arop or any other local kid is on the roster. Bottom line, Nebraska went 14-16.
Two years from now, Miles is 20-10. Nobody here will give a darn if Arop or any other local kid is on the roster. Bottom line, Nebraska went 20-10.
Here's the bottom line; Tim Miles doesn't think Arop is ready for college in 12 months. Bruce Chubick disagrees with him. Some posters agree with coach Miles, some posters agree with coach Chubick. Coach Chubick claims four schools have reached out to him in regards to Arop. I'll be paying close attention to who those four schools are, because as of right now he has two offers. Omaha & Denver. Not even Creighton has offered, which catches my attention.
I agree. I said above there is more to this story then we are hearing. I am not a huge Miles fan, but I am willing to cut him slack here. He would be insane to take back an offer to a local kid with D1 talent. Miles is not insane. Ergo there is an issue with this kid's talentThis thread is awesome.

Does the fact that Nebraska appears to be afraid to schedule UNO catch your attention?
Nebraska has scheduled Omaha. Creighton hasn't.
I guess Creighton is scared.
Two years ago UN-L and UNO played. Probably a good thing (for Nebraska) they didn't last year. And I seem to remember before that UNO game Miles being interviewed about how he had been in Darin Hansen's shoes, and couldn't get games against big schools or something along that line. Then UNO gave Nebraska all they could handle, and that series came to a halt.
You guess Creighton is scared? They probably are. But now Nebraska appears scarred of one of the two lowly programs that offered a kid who committed to Nebraska as a sophomore. Exactly how many programs do you expect to offer a kid from Omaha who committed to UN-L as a sophomore?
The kid doesn't have a Big 10 game or body. So I don't fault Miles for cutting him loose. I do have a problem with Miles cutting him loose after the summer AAU season. That is chicken $4!# I do have a problem with Miles shopping him Arop around to the point that Chubbick was getting phone calls asking about his availability. Weak stuff.
I totally agree with but basketball recruiting is so different from football. Once a kid "commits" in basketball the recruiting almost always ends. So there is a good chance he doesn't have more offers because he was committed. With that said, I don't think it is a big loss and he probably won't get many more offers, maybe 3-4 more. This thread is awesome.

Interesting point about the AAU season, and if that's the case I agree with you. Good job of bringing that up. I disagree about your interpretation on Chubick receiving calls. I read it that since it became public that Arop is available, four schools have reached out to coach Chubick. Not due to Miles "shopping him around", but because of him opening it up.
From the article:
Aguek is disappointed, but he’s OK. I’ve already had four calls about him from other schools.”
The shopping him started a little earlier in the summer. Chubbick was getting calls from coaches asking if Arop was still committed to Nebraska. I can't remember which show on 1620 this morning but it was discussed there.
I don't have a dog in this fight, but I was at the Omaha-Colorado game and if the Mavs convert some 1-and-1s early in the second half, they upset the Buffs. Also saw the Minnesota-Omaha game on TV, and let's just say Little Ricky was lucky he got the Mavs at the end of a tough road trip.Who is UN-L? Did you miss a letter and mean Las Vegas? Nebraska didn't play Omaha in a series, they played a single game. There were no future dates scheduled so a "series came to a halt" is impossible.
Omaha lost to Colorado, a tournament team that finished 22-12.
Omaha lost to Missouri, a terrible team that finished 10-21.
Omaha lost to Minnesota, a terrible team that finished 8-23. (NU blew 'em out)
Omaha lost to Wyoming, a terrible team that finished 13-18.
Omaha lost to Eastern Michigan, a bad team that finished 18-15.
To say, probably a good thing (for Nebraska) they didn't play last year is utterly ridiculous. The ending of the debate scene from Billy Madison can be inserted in response to your comments above.
Why is Nebraska scarred? From what? That doesn't make any sense, you're all over the place.
In Nebraska's pathetic basketball history, when was Nebraska decent? What are our claims to fame? An NIT final 4, a Big 8 tournament championship, and an NIT Championship. Whoopie! What do those accomplishments all have in common? They happened when there were locals on the team. (Hoppen, Stickland, Badgett, Chubick, etc). We don't need stars, but we need bodies who can contribute from nearby, so we can maybe, just maybe have a freaking full roster sometime.
Comparing Iowa State to Nebraska in basketball is a joke. They are practically in the middle between KC and Twin Cities, much closer to Chicago and Milwaukee, they've been relevant in college basketball since Orr was there, they have 18 NCAA tournament victories (18 more than us).
So we don't need any local kids, but yet for the 2nd year in a row, we don't have UNO on the schedule (but we have Sacramento State, University of Mary, Garner Webb, and Southern!!!!!!). Hmm.
We don't need any local kids, but if Nebraska lays an egg again this season vs Creighton, I wonder how much Khyri Thomas will have to do with that?
Get kids on campus. Gee why didn't Collier, and Doc think of that? Hmmm. Maybe we wouldn't be 0-7 in the dance if they had? It's just that easy to get elite players from around the country to go to the University with probably the 2nd worst basketball resume of all Power 5 schools, who's nearest major metro area is Kansas City. So simple.

Yep not possible to play a school 50 miles away when one coach apparently is afraid. Non-con schedules aren't scheduled years in advance. Those two schools playing each other is not impossible.

Nebraska (UN-L, the L is for Lincoln) lost to Samford, at home last year. Samford. Not STANFORD, Samford. Most pathetic Nebraska basketball game I've ever had the displeasure to attend.
The year before UN-L, lost to Incarnate Word, at home.

You are the one who tried made the UNLV connection out of UN-L.
Why is Nebraska scarred?
Don't ask me, ask the guy who could have put a D1 school on the schedule over the University of Mary. It took 55 from Shelds/Petteway to beat UNO (The O is for Omaha), and the game before, UNO beat Marquette on the road. Pretty good reason to not schedule them the next year.
